Alex Bowmans surprise retirement announcement caught much of the NASCAR world off guard Thursday, but the Hendrick Motorsports driver says the decision wasnt driven by the reason many fans assumed.Speaking Friday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, one day after announcing he will retire from full-time Cup Series competition following the 2027 season, Bowman explained that his future plans are centered less on what hes leaving behind and more on the life he wants to build once hes steps away from racing.Despite battling concussions, a broken back and, more recently, a bout of vertigo earlier this season, Bowman said his health wasnt the deciding factor.Instead, after nearly two decades chasing a racing career, hes ready for something different.Bowman says retirement isnt about injuriesBowman acknowledged the physical toll racing has taken but made it clear he still believes he can compete at NASCARs highest level.I dont think physical health is the No. 1 contributor here in this situation for me, Bowman said. Obviously, Ive had my fair share of injuries, but I still feel like I can do it, and I think through everything weve figured out through the course of this season, everybody helping me in the athletic center with PT every day and everything, I think Im in a good spot there and can continue doing it.Instead, Bowman said hes simply reached a point where other goals have become more important.I think for me, much more of it is things I want to do outside the race car, other goals I have in life, and stuff I want to do. If it was straight up that I cant do this anymore, it probably would have been this year, but I do feel like I can do it at a high level. Hopefully we can go prove that.The 33-year-old announced Thursday that he signed a one-year contract extension with Hendrick Motorsports that will allow him to finish his Cup career after the 2027 season, giving both himself and the organization time to prepare for the transition.Alex Bowman already knows what comes nextUnlike many retiring drivers who leave the door open for a comeback, Bowman said he has no intention of racing full-time beyond 2027, even if everything goes perfectly.Im just not going to continue racing, he said. I would love to end on a really high note, like everything goes perfect and we go win a championship and I could walk out that way. That would be amazing. Thats not going to make me want to stay.He added that his decision comes down to wanting a more normal life.For me, health-wise, mental health-wise, kind of everything, this is what I needed to do that would be best for me and the things I want to do outside of the car.Bowman said he has never envisioned racing well into his 40s like many of his peers. Instead, he hopes to spend more time with his Sprint and Midget racing team while continuing to work with Rick Hendricks automotive business.Hendrick Motorsports president Jeff Andrews indicated Bowman will remain part of the Hendrick family after his driving career ends, noting there are opportunities within the organization beyond the cockpit.For Bowman, thats exactly the future he has in mind.After spending years fighting for opportunities, filling in for Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2016 before eventually becoming a full-time Hendrick Motorsports driver, Bowman said hes grateful for everything the journey has given him, even if the statistics dont fully reflect what he hoped to accomplish.I mean, it has been a journey for sure, Bowman said. It hasnt gone exactly as I would have hoped in some ways, but at the same time, I have learned so much. I have grown so much as a person.I have gotten to have incredible teammates, learn from some awesome people, and be part of an amazing organization. I have had a lot of fun. Even though the stat sheet might not read how I want it to, its still been great in a lot of ways.
