Why Aston Martins Hungary Upgrade Is Basically a New Car Adrian Newey Just Wont Call It That
Call it a B-spec, call it a heavily revised AMR26, call it whatever you want what Aston Martin rolled out at the Hungaroring for the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix is, by any reasonable engineering standard, a new Formula 1 car. Sixteen separate components were declared upgraded, mechanics broke FIA curfew to get both cars fitted in time, and the team reportedly flew spare parts to Budapest just to guarantee Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll could each run the full package. That is not a development update. That is a rebuild.The backstory is by now well-documented and not particularly flattering. Adrian Newey didnt get serious work underway on the AMR26 until mid-March 2025, and the wind tunnel didnt see a model until mid-April three months behind rivals who were already deep into the new regulatory cycle. The car that arrived at pre-season testing in Barcelona was overweight, paddock insiders estimated by somewhere between 10 and 15 kilograms, maybe more, and the Honda power unit was generating vibrations severe enough to rattle onboard cameras loose and leave Alonso and Stroll visibly fighting the steering wheel. At the Australian opener, Alonso qualified 2.462 seconds off the pace. Both cars retired when the vibrations damaged the battery systems. It went largely sideways from there one point across the opening ten rounds, tenth of eleven teams in the constructors standings, behind only the expansion Cadillac outfit.Whats Actually New on This CarThe nose is the clearest sign of how deep the changes go. Where the original AMR26 carried a wide, blunt front structure, the Hungary version features a noticeably thinner, more tapered profile the kind of slender nose Newey has favoured since his early Red Bull years. That change alone cascades through the entire front end: new uprights, revised aerodynamic ducting, changed actuator mounting, and a completely reworked front wing with reshaped endplates. Per Newey, the forward section of the chassis was lightened to the point that it required a full re-homologation and fresh crash testing which, depending on your definition, crosses the threshold from upgrade to new car.Newey himself occupies both sides of that argument simultaneously. The main structural elements remain the same the chassis and gearbox architecture dont fundamentally change but weve taken weight out of both, which required re-homologating and crash testing the forward chassis, he said. So: same architecture, new crash test. Make of that what you will.The floor received four interconnected updates targeting overall downforce load, with modifications touching every surface including the leading edge vanes and the floor edge ahead of the rear tyre. The sidepod inlet concept has moved noticeably toward a narrower, more raised configuration reminiscent of where Red Bull was around 2021 exposing more of the floors upper surface. The engine cover sits tighter around the Honda unit, the cooling louvres are reshaped, and a new centreline cooling outlet has appeared at the rear. The diffuser edges, rear wing, beam wing, and rear wing endplates have all been replaced. About the only major carry-over is the gearbox, which dictates that the rear suspension mounting geometry is broadly similar to before though even that has been braced and strengthened, apparently because the original structure wasnt stiff enough near the exhaust heat.That last point had immediate consequences. Strolls rear suspension failed outright in FP1 yesterday, keeping him out of the second practice session entirely.What Hungary Actually Tells Us and What It DoesntThis package is only half the story. Hondas updated power unit, which should address the vibration and performance deficit that defined the first half of the season, is not ready until Zandvoort after the summer break. Newey was measured about what to expect in Budapest specifically, saying only that were predicting a large step, but Im reluctant to put specific numbers out there. Per Motorsport.com, he was equally clear that its only part of the package, so well have some more steps in Zandvoort and then further steps in Monza/Baku.The Hungaroring at least plays to Aston Martins current limitations. Its tight, high-downforce layout reduces the premium on raw engine power, which softens the blow of running an older Honda specification for one more weekend. Think of it as a controlled environment for a first real look at what the new chassis and aero concept can actually do.There is also a subtext here that goes beyond lap times. Alonso turns 45 shortly after this race weekend, and a decision on his future at the team is expected during the summer break. Newey acknowledged directly that the upgrade carries significance for Alonsos commitment: If we can show that were moving decisively in the right direction, hes absolutely committed to being behind the wheel. Separately, Autosport reported that Lawrence Stroll had been considering another round of personnel changes after the cars disastrous debut, and was persuaded to hold off only on the assurance that this overhaul would deliver meaningful improvement.Whether it does depends on correlation between the wind tunnel data, the simulation tools, and what the car actually produces in qualifying and race trim. Newey has admitted Aston Martins internal tools were outdated when he arrived, some tracing back to the Jordan F1 era. Modernising those systems while simultaneously redesigning the car is not a straightforward process. Hungary is less a race weekend for Aston Martin than an extended shakedown. The real verdict comes at Zandvoort, when the new chassis and the upgraded power unit are finally running together for the first time.
