Ireland's Rhasidat Adeleke secured qualification for next month's European Athletics Championships with an impressive 200m win at the Irish National Championships in Santry on Saturday. Needing to run 22.85 or faster to secure her place in Birmingham, Adeleke clocked 22.80 at Morton Stadium as she finished ahead of Lauren Roy, who was competing after being omitted from Commonwealth Games selection. Adeleke, 23, earned 400m silver at the 2024 European Championships in Rome but has struggled over the past year with injuries. "It's been a rough year. I didn't really have expectations, I just wanted to come out here in front of a home crowd and show up and whatever happens, happens," Adeleke told Athletics Ireland TV after clinching her first national outdoor 200m title with a championship record time. "I wouldn't be able to do it without this crowd. I knew that if I could do it anywhere it's at home."Thank you to everyone who supported me. So many people sent me such nice messages. Sometimes, you're in a bad place and think the worst of yourself and you see the people who are showing you love and support and it just lifts my spirits."Roy, who clocked 23.49 to beat Lorena Harrison to second, said she is excited for the Europeans after a breakout 2026 season."It's been so much fun this year and I'm still carrying my form all the way through, it's been a long season," said 25-year-old Roy, who will also compete in the 100m on Sunday. "I'm looking forward to going to the Europeans. Obviously the Nationals are very important but we're still building to the Europeans."While there was elation and relief for Adeleke, Sharlene Mawdsley - alongside whom she won European mixed relay gold in Rome - pulled up injured during the race.
