Dodgers Could Pivot to Tarik Skubal Alternative at the Trade Deadline
The Los Angeles Dodgers are known for collecting starting pitching, and with Shohei Ohtanis status so uncertain at the moment, they will likely be placing calls to check in on the market. Among the starting pitchers to be dealt, it has already been established that Tarik Skubal will be on the move. The Detroit Tigers are in free fall, and according to ESPNs Jeff Passan, it is a matter of when, not if. The Dodgers are considered the favorites for Skubal, according to Passan, but that does not mean that they will indeed land him. LA could be outbid, not due to a lack of resources, but because of how they want to allocate them. They may not want to give up all that much for a couple of months for Skubal, and the Dodgers could elect to have another team pay a steeper price. Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn ImagesIf they do not land Skubal for whatever reason, there is another big-name pitcher who is available for trade Cincinnati Reds fireballer Hunter Greene. Why Greene is available to tradeGreene is only 26 years old, but he has already emerged as one of the promising pitchers in baseball. His fastest is among the hardest for either a releiver or starter, clocking in at triple digits on a regular basis. In 2024, after working through some command issues, he posted an incredible 2.75 ERA in 150.2 innings of work, totaling 169 strikeouts. He followed that up with another elite season, posting a 2.76 ERA in 2025 and cementing himself as one of the more promising arms. This year, after undergoing elbow surgery that kept him out for the first half of the season, Greene has struggled with a 7.06 ERA, but he is still working his way back. The Reds are shopping him not because of these struggles, but rather because his contract extension is set to increase, and they could get a massive haul for Greene now. He is owed $15 million in 2027, $16 million in 2028, and has a $21 million club option for 2029 with a $2 million buyout.Cincinnati Reds pitcher Hunter Greene (21) celebrates after closing out the sixth inning of a MLB game between the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs, Friday, July 10, 2026, at Great American Ball Park in downtown Cincinnati.Could the Dodgers trade for Hunter Greene?According to MLB.coms Mark Feinsand, Greenes odds of being traded are 50-50.Dodgers Nations own Doug McKain pointed out that Andrew Friedman is very active on the phones and will likely explore what it would cost to land him. Possibly, as McKain said, the Brewers could jump on a Greene trade, something that would appeal to them due to the team control, and the Dodgers may step in to avoid them landing such an elite arm to pair with their already amazing rotation. Friedman, while not a fan of deadline moves and the prospect prices, is well aware that a three-peat is on the line and the Dodgers will be doing their best to give themselves the best odds to win a title. And that may involve being aggressive, either for Greene or Skubal.
