Photo by Amy Lemus/NurPhoto via Getty ImagesLucas Glover caused a real stir during the 3M Open last week.Glover is one of the more experienced pros on the PGA Tour, and he is extremely outspoken with that.The man from Greenville, South Carolina, proved that in abundance last week at TPC Twin Cities.Glovers biggest pet peeve is AimPoint the green-reading method that has become so popular among professional golfers over the past few years and, indeed, amateurs.After holing a birdie putt on his 10th hole during the final round of the 3M Open on Sunday, Lucas Glover took off his golf shoes before leaving them on the side of the green.Photo by David Berding/Getty ImagesHe then walked to the hole to retrieve his ball.At the time, many thought Glover was taking aim (excuse the pun) at those who utilize the AimPoint method.However, Glover explained after his round that he was in fact goofing off after receiving complaints due to the length of the metal spikes on his golf shoes.No, not even close. Nothing to do with AimPoint actually, the 46-year-old said.Complaints behind me about spike marks. I wear metal. Someone in the group ahead of us was too.Singled me out. Just goofing off.What Lucas Glover did in the scoring tent after complaints about his metal spikesMax Greyserman, Glovers playing partner during the final round, made an appearance on the NUCLR GOLF POD and spoke about the incident at the 3M Open last week.What happened was we teed off on 10, and the incident occurred on the 10th green, said Greyserman,I paused for a second on the fringe and Im kind of wondering why hes walking in a circle and not towards the hole. And then Im like, all right, whatever.Then Im about to walk towards my ball, but then he stops on the fringe right in front of where I was going to walk towards my ball.I just stopped for a second and then all of a sudden hes taking his shoes off and Im just literally thinking, what is going on?Like, I had absolutely no idea what is happening. Ive never seen anything like this. I have no context of why hes doing this.He takes his shoes off, leaves them on the fringe, goes and picks the ball out of the hole in just his socks.At that point Im like, this is this is crazy.Photo by Sam Hodde/Getty ImagesLet me just go make my birdie because I got a job to do and my job is not to worry about Lucas Glover taking his shoes off on the green.Were walking in the next hole and I remember looking at my caddie and Im like, did you see him take off his shoes, was I seeing that correctly?And hes like, yeah, I have no idea what just happened.Then Lucas told us that the rules official came up to him and said that guys behind us were complaining about spike marks on the greens. Lucas was upset because they were singling him out.Lucas Glover left his phone number and a message for his fellow playersGreyserman then revealed what Glover did in the scorers tent immediately after his round.Metal spikes are perfectly legal, whether you agree with that or not, it doesnt matter. Theyre legal at the current time, Greyserman explained.The rules official has no jurisdiction to tell Lucas to, like, walk better or something, to walk more carefully.Like, thats not the rules officials job. It has never been the rules officials job.He (Glover) was kind of making a mockery of the situation, essentially, and thats kind of what Lucas does.Hes awesome. Hes a great guy, and hes just kind of making light of the situation.Then we get done with the round and were in scoring. Lucas takes a black Sharpie, grabs a white piece of paper, and writes in big letters.I dont remember the exact words, but something along the lines of, you know, if you have any issues or complaints about bimetal spikes, please give me a call and feel free to talk to me.Then he signed it and wrote his phone number, and he told the scorers to leave the piece of paper on the desk for the rest of the day.And by the way, we were playing behind someone who was wearing metal spikes. I mean, we didnt complain about it.Lucas Glover was clearly very unhappy about the situation at the 3M Open, and it would be fascinating to know if anyone took him up on his offer by calling his personal number after their round.
