Penn State training camp preview: Five storylines to watch over next month
With Penn State beginning training camp Wednesday, here are five storylines to follow leading up to the first game of the Matt Campbell era Sept. 5 against Marshall at Beaver Stadium:1. How will all the jigsaw pieces fit on the field?Campbell has been talking about the importance of team unity since his arrival. He has assembled a team with about 50 Penn State returners and 40 transfers from 18 schools, including 24 from Iowa State, Campbells previous institution.By all accounts, the players began meshing during winter workouts and continued to bond during spring practice and the summer. But because so many front-line players missed all or part of spring practice and because many of these guys have never played in games together, its natural to wonder how all the pieces will fit once the games start.Theres certainly some unknown, Campbell said at Big Ten Media Days in Chicago. Probably a little bit of our good fortune is that we have such a good history with the (former Iowa State) players that missed a good portion of the spring. I think the Penn State (returning) players that missed a portion of the spring have earned videotape evidence of what they can do.As Ive probably said more times than not, Im not worried about what our football players can do as football players. Im continuing to look at the unknown of how we will respond when things get hard. Are we a great team? Do we have all those great factors that the great teams have? Im really excited about the ability to continue to unify that in fall camp.2. Whos the most important player on the team? Its easy to say Rocco Becht because he plays quarterback. He has increased value, however, because theres not much experience behind him and because he suffered two shoulder injuries and two concussions last season.Becht started 39 games in three years at Iowa State, leading the Cyclones to 26 victories, including seven game-winning drives. He has passed for 9.274 yards and 64 touchdowns and rushed for 19 TDs.Redshirt freshman Alex Manske, a former four-star prospect, is expected to be the No. 2 quarterback, but he missed all of spring practice after undergoing a medical procedure. He has played in only three college games and has thrown just five passes.I think its monumental for him to get back out there, Campbell said. He had an incredible junior year (of high school). His senior year got cut short right before the playoffs because of an injury to his elbow. He missed spring ball at Iowa State his freshman year.He really had a tremendous fall camp last year. Alex really got cleared around the first of June. Hes been throwing. Hes ready to go and fully cleared. We believe in what Alexs talent level is.Connor Barry, a transfer from Division III Christopher Newport, received the majority of snaps in the spring because Manske was out and Becht was limited. Freshmen Peyton Falsone and Kase Evans are not expected to be in the mix.3. Whats the strongest position on the team?Tight ends, and its not close. The Nittany Lions have at least three tight ends who will play in the NFL: Andrew Rappleyea and Iowa State transfers Ben Brahmer and Gabe Burkle, who Campbell claimed is the best blocking tight end in the country. All three are adept at blocking and receiving and combined for 83 catches, 928 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. The smallest of three is the 6-4, 242-pound Rappleyea.Expect offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser to often use formations with two or three tight ends.Ben Brahmer is truly one of the best tight ends, if not the best tight end in the country at every skill set, Campbell said. Gabe really flourished after Ben was hurt in 2024 and carried it into last year. I thought he was as good as anybody on the ball as weve coached.I do think its a huge part of our success. You know what great tight ends look like at Penn State. Top to bottom, thats a really special room. We feel really good about it.4. What position group has the most questions? It has to be the defensive line. It was an area of concern when Campbell was hired. Seven of the 10 players expected to see the most playing time are transfers from Iowa State, UCLA, Utah, Oklahoma State and Colorado. The Lions will be heavier at tackle, where 6-4, 326-pound Siale Taupaki and 6-2, 310-pound Armstrong Nnodim are expected to start.Finding enough productive edge rushers will be a bigger challenge. Ikenna Ezeogu has experience at one end, but Penn State returners Max Granville and Yvan Kemajou do not at the other end.The Lions finished 33rd last season in sacks, but Iowa State was 127th.With new defensive coordinator DAnton Lynn, Campbell is switching from the 3-3-5 alignment that he used at Iowa State to a four-man front. What do we want to make sure we have the ability to do? Campbell said. I still think the ability to have multiplicity in what we do defensively is certainly critical, but maybe coming with more of a four-man front. I still think those multiple variables are huge.5. Will the Lions finally have productive wide receivers?Penn State hasnt had an outstanding wide receiver group since Jahan Dotson and Parker Washington were teammates in 2021.Iowa State transfers Brett Esklidsen and Chase Sowell have experience. They combined for 62 receptions for 1,026 yards and seven TDs last season. Sowell was named the 2025 Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year after he transferred from East Carolina. That room is deservedly one of those rooms where we truly believe, Campbell said. Chase Sowell had a very good last year. He had some monumental games and some huge moments. If you look at Brett Eskildsens trajectory, hes right in the wheelhouse of the great receivers weve had. Hes ready to take the next step to become a great player.Electric sophomore Koby Howard has the inside track to be the third receiver after he played well in the second half of last season. Hell receive competition from Karon Brookins, Amarion Jackson, converted defensive back Omarion Jackson and Zay Robinson. Were really encouraged by the athleticism and talent of Karon Brookins, Campbell said. Koby Howard had great flashes in spring practice, but can you do it consistently? Can you show up every single day of fall camp?------------Penn State Projected Depth ChartOffensePos./Starter/BackupQB: Rocco Becht/Alex ManskeRB: Carson Hansen/James PeoplesWR: Brett Eskildsen/Koby HowardWR: Chase Sowell/Karon BrookinsTE: Ben Brahmer/Gabe BurkleTE: Andrew Rappleyea/Cooper AlexanderLT: Malachi Goodman/Garrett SextonLG: Trevor Buhr/Will TompkinsC: Brock Riker/Dominic RulliRG: Cooper Cousins/Vaea IkakoulaRT: Anthony Donkoh/Kuol KuolPK: Ryan Barker/Cristiano RosaDefensePos./Starter/BackupDE: Ikenna Ezeogu/Alexander McPhersonDT: Armstrong Nnodim/Keanu WilliamsDT: Siale Taupaki/Dallas VakalahiDE: Yvan Kemajou/Max GranvilleLB: Kooper Ebel/Cam SmithLB: Caleb Bacon/Alex TatschLB: Tony Rojas/Cael BrezinaCB: Zion Tracy/Audavion CollinsCB: Daryus Dixson/Jahmir JosephS: Marcus Neal Jr./Vaboue ToureS: Jamison Patton/Jeremiah CooperP: Nathan Tiyce/Matthew Parker
