LEXINGTON The stage is set for the finals of the marquee event in the 93rd News Journal Tennis Tournament.Now its just a matter of waiting. And it should be worth the wait.Former Lexington High School teammates and current Ohio Athletic Conference college rivals Ethan Remy and Jake Chilcote emerged from Sundays marathon slate of action to reach the finals of mens singles.Originally set for Monday night at the high school courts, the title match has been postponed until Saturday, August 22, time TBA. Chilcote is having his wisdom teeth pulled Monday and Remy is flying back to New York, where he has been working this summer at the John McEnroe Tennis Academy.Both of them played four matches, singles and doubles, on Sunday, so squeezing in the championship bout that night was not a realistic option.So we get them at their rested and refreshed best in about three weeks.Remy, the 2024 champ, reached the finals for the fourth straight year by beating 2023 champ Justin Csepe 6-3, 6-4 in the semis. Chilcote, a first-time finalist, went the distance to oust Remys younger brother, Cooper, a 2024 finalist, 7-5, 4-6, 10-4 (tiebreaker) in the other semi.Earlier on Sunday, the two Remys won mens doubles by beating Csepe and TJ Michalski 6-2, 6-1.Ethan Remy, going for his second mens singles title, will be a junior this fall at Ohio Northern, where his teammates will include his brother Cooper, a freshman, and another former Lex teammate, Dylan Catanese, a sophomore. Catanese and Ethan Remy won an OHSAA state doubles title in 2024.Catanese won the NJ mixed doubles title Friday night with partner Hayliegh Tucker. But the 2025 mens singles and mens doubles champ (with Ethan Remy) sat out the rest of the tournament after dislocating the pinkie finger on his right hand playing backyard football on the Fourth of July.Chilcote will be a senior at Otterbein University. He is a two-time All-OAC second team selection and, like Ethan Remy, is a former News Journal Player of the Year.On Saturday, Lex grad Jade Adkins defeated girls 18-and-under champ Hannah Remy 9-7 for the womens singles title. Five women competed in a round robin format with the top two advancing to the finals.
