Bill Belichick talks UNC's 2026 improvement in tight end room
The UNC football team's offensive struggles in 2025 quickly became apparent, scoring just 34 points in its first two games.North Carolina only scored over 40 points once last year, during a 41-6 blowout of FCS school Richmond. The Tar Heels dealt with inconsistent quarterback play from Gio Lopez, a constantly changing running back room despite stellar play from true freshman Demon June, plus a plethora of additional struggles. One of UNC's greatest 2025 offensive struggles came amongst tight ends, with Jake Johnson's 144 receiving yards topping the room.Belichick is much happier about his 2026 room, headlined by three offseason transfer portal additions."That room's been a total makeover," Belichick said according to 247Sports. "It's a lot of new players, a lot of talented players. "We had more production from those guys in the spring, than we had the entire year last year. It's a position CoachBobby Petrinoand I both crave.""I've always had good tight ends," Belichick continued. "It's a very important position for our offense. We weren't able to really get much production there last year. I hope that'll balance us out more this year. Certainly those guys are off to a good start. CoachCaleb Pickrellhas done a really good job with that group."North Carolina landed Ohio State tight end Jelani Thurman, Texas tight end Jordan Washington and Colorado State tight end Jaxxon Warren in the transfer portal, while retaining Shamar Easter from a season. Washington enjoyed the best 2025 amongst this new UNC tight end room, catching seven passes for 109 yards and a touchdown.Better Tar Heel teams in recent memory have strong tight ends, like former Pro Bowler Eric Ebron.
