The High Desert continues to prove it produces top-tier athletic talent as the Desert Communities Soccer Club (DCSC) GU17 team capped off an extraordinary summer run by taking second place at the 2026 US Club Soccer National Finals in Colorado.The DCSC players and coach Rachel Posik come from all over the High Desert, including Adelanto, Apple Valley, Barstow and Hesperia, and practice at Westwind's Sports Center in Victorville on Tuesdays and Thursdays.While the GU 17 bracket is made up of 16- and 17-year-olds, most of the High Desert girls are 14 and 15, having earned the opportunity to play up because of their skill level.One of the younger players, Jimena Nunez from Riverside Preparatory High School in Oro Grande, received recognition as one of the best players of the tournament and was named to the prestigious All-Tournament Team for her standout play on the national stage.Read More: Apple Valley soccer team headed to Colorado for the national championshipsThe road to ColoradoThe journey to Colorado began in Temecula, California, at the National Cup West Regional. Battling through an elite field of 98 teams representing 51 clubs across seven states, DCSC captured the U-16 Girls Premier Division title.They emerged as one of just 18 regional champions overall, punching their ticket to the national stage.The team arrived in Denver for the 25th National Cup Finals in late July, joining more than 100 of the top athletes across the U-13 through U-19 divisions. Only 24 teams nationwide earned a spot in the championship matches in Colorado, team manager Julia Collado told the Daily Press."The teams chemistry and teamwork really showed up on the field during National Cup Finals," Collado added. "They played with high intensity from start to finish and battled for every single possession. Between a rock-solid defense that shuts down attacks early, excellent ball control through the midfield, and blistering speed up front, they kept opponents scrambling all tournament while averaging two goals per game."Play by playTeam associates, parents and the competition noted DCSC's impressive performance throughout the tournament. In the Group A pool play, the team scored eight goals across three games, battling teams from Georgia, Iowa and Virginia.The next day, DCSC faced South Dakota United Futbol Club in the final. After 80 grueling minutes on the pitch, DCSC fell short of the trophy, concluding their run as the National Runner-Up. However, the team was awarded Sportsmanship Honorable Mentions for their outstanding conduct throughout the event.Despite the championship game loss, the High Desert team added three major honors to their team resume: National Cup West Regional Champions, Albion Cup Showcase Finalists and National Cup Finalists.McKenna Mobley is a reporter for the Daily Press.
