Brandon Aiyuks NFL future remains uncertain without eligibility to play, unless he takes one step
Photo by Cooper Neill/Getty ImagesSan Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuks status as an ineligible player has continued for over eight months, and he cant attempt an NFL return unless he takes one step.Aiyuk was placed on the 49ers left squad list in December 2025 for going AWOL amid contract disputes from voided 2026 guarantees after failing to meet rehab targets for his torn ACL.Aiyuk remains on the list and is ineligible to play for the 49ers or any other team in the NFL, and the 28-year-old must take one step to hopefully continue his NFL future on a new team.Brandon Aiyuk needs to reach out to NFL Commissioner Roger GoodellThe only way for Aiyuk to seek reinstatement into the league is by sending a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell requesting the same, and sending a copy to the 49ers, with whom Aiyuk has reportedly not been communicating since their disputes began.Unless the Commissioner allows Aiyuks reinstatement, neither the player nor the team can change his current contract status. While on the Left Team list, Aiyuk does not count against the 49ers roster or salary cap and receives no pay, giving the team no incentive to release him and taking on millions in dead cap when his actions have allowed them to wipe him from their cap.Photo by Cooper Neill/Getty ImagesAiyuk does not want to take the step of requesting reinstatement, claiming he doesnt want to do business with the 49ers as he continues to hold out for a release.Brandon Aiyuks only suitor might have already moved onAiyuk has been angling for a release because he intended to join the Washington Commanders. Unfortunately, the Commanders just spent $12 million to sign Stefon Diggs. This essentially removes the only suitor Aiyuk had in mind for his free agency, further worsening the career limbo hes in.Aiyuk cannot return to the NFL for at least the next few seasons as his contract remains on the 49ers Left Team list. The franchise has no reason to remove him from there after their public estrangement, while Aiyuk doesnt intend to make any sort of effort to fight for his reinstatement either. With the Commanders likely off the table now, Aiyuk might have to actively participate in the due process hes been avoiding to try to revive his NFL career.Read more:NFL coaches and executives share brutal Shedeur Sanders verdict amid Browns QB battleWhat Maxx Crosby said about Caleb Williams as Chicago Bears trade talk sparked back into lifeDonald Trumps son-in-law, Saudi Arabia PIF-led group buy Madden and FC publisher EA for $55 billion
