Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco junior wide out Darren Tubbs has locked in a pair of game day visits.Tubbs is one of the top receivers out West and had a great off-season. We had a chance to see him multiple times in multiple settings and he was always on the short list when talking about the top overall receiver at said event.At the big Battle of the Beach 7v7 tournament last month, Tubbs was our MVP as the Braves rolled through a stacked field. Here was our post-event eval on Tubbs:The 28 pass catcher was un-stoppable and made big play after big play all day long. Hes a slick route runner who can get separation down the field, makes defenders miss after the catch and catches the ball well through contact. Hes fearless going over the middle and made some real tough catches in tight quarters. For being a sub 6-0 WR, Tubbs has a large catch radius and is equally adept catching the ball at his ankles, over his shoulder or going up and making a contested jump ball catch over a defender.Hes not just skilled, hes proven to be a clutch performer who wants the football in tight situations. Hes a competitive player and looks primed for a huge year for the Braves this fall as the teams new go to guy.The Braves are one of the top teams in the country this year and have a chance to win a National Championship. They play a stacked schedule including a few out of state games but Tubbs is still hoping to visit as many schools as he can during the fall.I have two dates locked in right now, Tubbs said. Ill be at Cal for the UCLA game (Sept. 5) and Miami when they host Florida State (Oct. 17).The other schools I would really like to visit are Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Arizona State and Ohio State. I definitely plan to make it out to a UCLA game too but Im mainly looking at the schools out of the area since I know I can get to UCLA any time.Cal and UCLA have been high on Tubbs list for some time so hell have a chance to kill two birds with one stone for that game.UCLA is on the rise and I have a great relationship with Colin Lockett (WR coach), Tubbs said. Hes one of the coaches Ive known the longest, for a couple of years now. Thats my dog right there and hes been recruiting me really hard and wants me back on campus so Im going to get back up there.I camped with Cal and loved it there, Tubbs said. I already know Geoff McArthur really well since he coached here at Bosco and it was great to know Ike Hilliard and Jordan Somerville as well. They all have a NFL experience as a player and a coach. Development is huge for me and who better to learn from than the guys that have been there.Miami entered the picture after offering back in late June.Miami has a great program, I like their offense and I really like how they use under-sized receivers, Tubbs said. Im an under-sized receiver at about 5-10 or 5-11 and you see how they used Malachi Toney, another under-sized receiver so I can see how they would use me.Ive been to Miami before but not as a recruit. It was a long time ago when I was playing youth ball. That was a big offer for me so Im excited to visit and learn more about the school.ASU is another staple on Tubbs list and was one of the first schools to really prioritize him when he was a sophomore. ASU has been recruiting me longer than anyone and I really like Hines Ward a lot, Tubbs said. Hes a great coach and has that NFL background and that means a lot. Hes been where I want to go and hes someone I know I can trust to really develop me and get me better.Oklahoma and Notre Dame are two more schools that got involved this off-season and are high on his list.Oklahoma came to my Showcase and I had a good to talk with Stacey (Ford), Tubbs said. I have a lot of interest, Oklahoma has a great program with great tradition. Coach (Ben) Arbuckle was the one who offered me and I like what Im hearing from them right now.Notre Dame is a storied program with so much tradition. It was surreal when I got that offer and Im grateful and excited to build the relationship with the coaching staff. I need to sit down with my family and figure out a plan when I can get out there for a visit but Im very excited about the opportunity.
