Head coach Vincent Kompany decided to clarify his plans for the two.Speaking in an interview, captured by @iMiaSanMia, Kompany addressed the goalkeeping hierarchy, affirming Manuel Neuers status as the starting choice, but also laying out a deliberate development path for his 22-year-old understudy Urbig.Manu is our number 1, I like to be clear, Kompany explained. But we love Jonas Urbig. We want to continue his improvement and development. He played in a cup final against Stuttgart and in important Champions League matches. The goal and this is not surprising is that we want to give him game time. When and how, well see, the season will decide.Neuer is already 40, an age at which 99% of football players would have already retired, but it looks like some legends just dont want to hang up the boots. Questions about his performance and its decline due to his age have been going around for some time now, especially before (and after, to be honest) his return to international football. Urbig is the most obvious choice to take his place his development has been phenomenal, and he has proved himself more than once. While this particular author wishes that Alexander Nbel was handled differently, and given the chance to become the next Neuer, Urbig deserves to take over. Whether or not Neuer will retire at the end of the season is still unclear, even if it does seem like he will.
