Ohio State will be in the mix to sign the No. 1 recruiting class in the 2028 cycle. That may sound like counting chickens before they hatch, but the Buckeyes are rolling early and they just landed their second junior five-star pledge.Lawrence (Mass.) St. Johns Preparatory five-star quarterback Christopher Vargas is Rivals No. 1 passer in the class and hes the No. 7 overall prospect in the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all major recruiting media companies. Hes now committed to head coach Ryan Day and Co.The 6-foot-4, 180-pounder announced his decision on Saturday, choosing Ohio State over a wave of other offers. Vargas did not name finalists leading into his announcement, and for the most part, his decision timeline was under the radar, at least on a national scale.But, when it was reported earlier this week that Vargas would be taking his name off the board on Aug. 8, arrows pointed toward Columbus. The Big Ten program now has its next five-star QB commit.Just the coaching staff and the place theyre at, the culture, they have everything that is great for me and the right fit for me, Vargas told Rivals Steve Wiltfong when asked why he picked OSU. I think Ohio State is the place that can develop me the best.Vargas already has a high school state title under his belt and hes primed for a monster junior campaign this fall. He threw for over 2,000 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2025. Rivals Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power labeled Vargas a gifted arm talent who looks like one of the purest passers early on in the 2028 cycle back in March.Buckeyes now have pair of 5-stars in the classThe departure of vaunted receivers coach Brian Hartline has not halted Ohio States push for the best pass-catching prospects. On July 1, Philadelphia St. Josephs Prep five-star WR Jett Harrison chose the Buckeyes.The son of NFL legend Marvin Harrison and younger brother to Marvin Harrison Jr., Jett is the No. 4 prospect in the nation. He chose Ohio State over Miami, Oregon and USC. Hes just as touted as his father and brother.I think Jett Harrisons combination of ball skills and route-running ability is elite at this stage, Power wrote of the five-star. Everyone is familiar with his Hall of Fame father and top-five pick older brother. While there is a ways to go, Jett is more advanced in his process than his brother at the same stage.Over a year ago last June, OSU landed its first 2028 pledge via IMG Academy (Fla.) four-star running back Elijah Newman-Hall. The coveted 6-foot, 200-pound burner is now the No. 86 overall prospect and No. 4 RB in the cycle.In October, Newman-Hall was flanked by Trotwood (Ohio) Madison four-star defensive lineman Jameer Whyce. A quintessential Buckeyes target, hes the No. 30 prospect and could certainly obtain five-star status down the line. Hes also the No. 2 junior prospect in Ohio.More will come. Ohio States presence on the recruiting trail is as prevalent as ever and it could end with up a top-ranked class when the time to put pen to paper comes next December.
