The Rhode Island champion Lincoln Little League All-Stars opened regional play with a tough loss on Saturday, Aug. 8, falling to the New York champions from Port Washington 10-3 at the Metro Regional tournament held at the A. Bartlett Giamatti Little League Leadership Training Center in Bristol, Connecticut.The New Yorkers struck first, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning, and adding four more in the third to take an early lead. Lincoln answered with two runs in the bottom of the third when Tucker Choiniere doubled home Adrian Duffney, who opened the inning with a walk.Choiniere advanced to third on a ground ball, then scored when Jackson Lockhart grounded out to the second baseman.Two innings later, Duffney hit a one-out single, took second when Choiniere drew a walk, advanced to third on a wild pitch, then came in to score on another wild pitch.But New York would not allow any other runs and added three more of its own in the final frame to seal the game.Hugo Fiero, Duffney and Choiniere each recorded a hit, with Duffney scoring two of Rhode Island's three runs.The regional tournament is double-elimination style, and the Little Leaguers from Lincoln are no strangers to that format. Lincoln navigated the losers bracket and beat Barrington twice, including a 2-1 triumph in the winner-take-all Rhode Island championship final to capture the states crown. The win marked Lincolns return to the regional stage for the first time since 2013, when it played in the New England Regional.
