Angels 30-Year-Old Debutant Blake Weiman Could Answer Bullpen Problems
Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher Blake Weiman made his MLB debut aged 30 on Friday, providing some much-needed relief to the Halos bullpen.Weiman, an eighth-rounder in the 2017 draft, went to the University of Kansas, posting a .280 ERA through 30 appearances in his final season before the Pittsburgh Pirates snagged him in the middle rounds. He remained in Pittsburghs organization until 2022, when they released him.He bounced around the league after his release, featuring for four organizationsincluding the Angelsin the minors and falling to Double-A.Its a struggle, Weiman said. I remember getting released by Pittsburgh and going to Double-A, and you feel like youre taking a step back and the light gets further and further away. Deep down, you have to keep showing up every day and believing that the work youre putting in is going to pay off. Just never lose faith that youre capable of being in a big-league locker room and showing up every night to pitch against the best hitters in the world.Weiman didnt give up, and after a solid season with Double-A Rocket City, the Angels called him up. The beneficiary of a radical change in the bullpen from the Angels, Weiman is clearly determined to make himself a mainstay in the bullpen. His debut came against the Miami Marlins on Friday, entering the game in the seventh inning with a one-run lead to protect. While he allowed two hits, Weiman navigated out of the inning for his first MLB hold. He got his first MLB strikeout on Sunday, logging two in a perfect inning against the Marlins.Aug 7, 2026; Miami, Florida, USA; Los Angeles Angels pitcher Blake Weiman (68) returns to the dugout against the Miami Marlins after the seventh inning at loanDepot Park. Mandatory Credit: Sam Navarro-Imagn ImagesWhy Would Weiman Be Useful to the Angels Bullpen? While the sample size from Weiman is small, his performance in a leverage situation Friday is reason enough to give him a little more runway in MLB. The Angels bullpen has been among the worst in MLB this season, and adding an arm who is calm in important situations is invaluable. His stuff isnt exactly the best, but the right-hander has located his pitches extremely well throughout his two outings. His Location+ grades at 119, meaning he is elite at putting pitches in optimal spots in the zoneor at least has been so far. He is yet to allow a barrel or hard-hit ball through his two innings pitched, and is generating plenty of swing and miss. The Angels are still figuring things out as far as their bullpen goes, and letting Weiman see more high-leverage situations could benefit them massively going forwardpotentially landing them a setup man for the next season or two.
