Joe Ryan has spent much of the second half of the season trying to work through issues with his delivery. He got rocked in his first start after the break, giving up a franchise-high six home runs in a game. He gave up four earned runs in each of his next two starts.It was atypical for the all-star starter.I think when you start thinking about throwing knuckleballs in situations, its probably time to figure something out, Ryan said.The Twins sent him home from their most recent road trip, where imaging revealed a glute strain and he was subsequently placed on the 15-day injured list. Ryan said he knew when the issue in the area started flaring up and he tried to push through it in those three starts.That didnt work.I think everything else was just kind of crumbling around it, it felt like, where it just kind of like, knew it was still obviously wearing on me and like affecting every other aspect, Ryan said. It just felt like I was throwing underwater for three outings, and bullpens and stuff.Ryan, who had a 2.85 ERA at the break and was named to his second consecutive all-star team, had posted a 9.39 ERA across three starts (16 earned runs in 15 1/3 innings) post-break before the Twins shut him down.(When) youre on a heater and youre throwing pretty well, and I dont want to say ego gets in there, but I think it does, Ryan said. Im like, OK, I want to go out there and throw and do my best to help the team get (to the playoffs), and add at the deadline and do these things. And you just realize, it does the opposite for the team in that situation, where its like, youre trying to go out there and do it, and if you dont have your stuff, its a little hard.The injury, he said, threw some things off and he built some bad habits. As a result, hes had to spend time trying to get back to himself and figure out issues with his delivery.While the strain doesnt seem to be too serious and Ryan has been playing catch on flat ground, general manager Jeremy Zoll said they would see how he progressed before determining his next steps. That was something they believed they would have a better sense of as he worked through these next few days.We want to make sure that we dont try to push him along and end up on this spiral or hamster wheel, Zoll said. Were trying to thread the needle on not having him down too long, so it doesnt require too long of a buildup, but we want to make sure everything is resolved. So, as he progresses to mound work, he can make the mechanical adjustments hes trying to make and feel, and get back to the prime form we know hes capable of.Buxton good after workoutDerek Sheltons right arm was sore a day after throwing batting practice to Byron Buxton, the first time he had thrown BP in an estimated seven years.But Buxton, it seems, came out of the workout feeling much better than his manager did after being put through a pregame workout that included running and hitting activities.(Monday), watching him go through everything he went through, he looked really good, Shelton said. But I think we also knew that, OK, we put a lot on his plate (Monday). And we had to. We have to test. And (Tuesday) he comes in and its an encouraging sign and we go.Buxton, on the injured list with a hip injury, could return soon.
