Florida basketball in NET top 5 with one regular-season game left
Florida basketball (24-6, 15-2) entered the top five in the NET rankings after beating the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday and held its position with another win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Tuesday.Florida started at No. 33 in the initial NET rankings at the end of November and slowly climbed into the top 10 by early February. Now the Gators are vying for a top seed in the NCAA Tournament after proving themselves as one of the most improved teams over the course of the season. Two of Florida's six losses have come against top-three programs, and three have come against top-eight programs.During the current 10-game win streak, Florida has won all but one contest (vs. Kentucky) by double digits, averaging a 23.2-point margin of victory. Six of those wins have come against Quadrant 1 opponents, leading to Florida's steady climb up the rankings.The Gators are the only SEC team ranked inside the top 15, with Vanderbilt being the next closest at No. 16. Alabama is right behind them at No. 17, and Tennessee and Arkansas control the Nos. 19 and 20 spots, respectively.Florida's final regular-season game comes on the road against No. 27 Kentucky, which is yet another Quadrant 1 opportunity for the Gators.Breaking down Floridas wins by QuadrantBefore going into Floridas resume, its important to understand how the quadrants are divided. Where a game is played has as much to do with the quadrant as the quality of the opponent. As the rankings change, so does the quality of the wins.Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353Quadrant 1 GamesFlorida is 11-5 in Quadrant 1 games. The Arizona Wildcats (14-2), Auburn Tigers (5-11) and Kansas Jayhawks (8-8) are the only other teams with 16 Quadrant 1 games played this season. Arizona holds the most Q1 wins on the year, followed by Duke (13-2), Michigan (11-1) and Florida.Non-conference Q1 losses came against No. 1 Duke,No. 3 Arizona and No. 8 UConn. All three are considered very good losses. Florida also lost to No. 42 TCU. The Gators' lone non-conference Q1 win came against No. 31 Miami at a neutral site (Jacksonville). The Hurricanes and Horned Frogs are both poised to hold Q1 status through their respective conference tournaments.Several of Florida's SEC games have come against Q1 opponents. The Missouri (No. 59) loss on the road remains in Quadrant 1, which is good for the Gators, but Auburn continues to move further from the top 30, dropping out of Q1 territory for games played at home.The Q1 conference wins came against No. 16 Vanderbilt (road), No. 17 Alabama (home), No. 19 Tennessee (home), No. 20 Arkansas (home), No. 27 Kentucky, No. 29 Georgia (both), No. 38 Texas (road), No. 43 Texas A&M (road) and No. 57 Oklahoma (road).Quadrant 2 GamesIn Quadrant 2 games, Florida is 4-1, with road wins at No. 90 Ole Miss and No. 110 South Carolina during conference play.The other Q2 wins came during the non-conference schedule against No. 75 Providence and No. 86 George Washington, both at a neutral site.Florida's lone Quadrant 2 loss came against No. 39 Auburn at home.Quadrant 3 and 4 gamesFlorida is 4-0 in Quadrant 3 games, with wins over No. 77 Florida State, No. 108 Mississippi State and No. 110 South Carolina, all at home. The Seminoles were briefly in Qudrant 2 territory and could finish at No. 75 or better by the end of the season.
