Travis Etienne signs with Saints: Grade for Alvin Kamara's replacement?
The Alvin Kamara era in New Orleans is nearing its end. That's the logical conclusion after the Saints made a significant investment in a new running back this offseason.Travis Etienne signed with the New Orleans Saints Monday, inking a four year, $52 million contract to punch up the league's 31st-ranked rushing attack. The move adds a young, explosive runner and receiver who racked up more than 1,000 rushing yards in three of his four active NFL seasons to date. It also raises questions about Kamara's role as he nears his 31st birthday. This is a significant outlay for a franchise that's spent the last decade stuck in salary cap hell. Will making Etienne the team's *second* tailback making more than $12 million annually pay off? Does this mean Kamara is set to retire? Will Etienne's arrival ensure a relatively smooth transition atop the depth chart, or will this be another high priced mistake from general manager Mickey Loomis? The deal: Travis Etienne signs with Saints for four years, $52 million (guarantees not yet disclosed)New Orleans needed to find Tyler Shough some help. Kamara's yards per carry dipped to a career-low 3.6 last year. His rush yards over expected (RYOE) hit -0.7 per attempt, also a personal worst. With his age-31 season approaching, there's minimal chance of a return to his Pro Bowl form. Devin Neal didn't look ready for prime time late in 2025 and Kendre Miller is a perpetual injury risk. That shined a spotlight on Etienne.Etienne was a marvel as a rookie but has struggled as a runner the seasons since. His 1,100-yard campaign last year was a solid bounce-back from below average 2023 and 2024 seasons but wasn't necessarily what you'd look for in a $12 million/year player. His 44 rushing yards over expected (RYOE) ranked 31st among tailbacks, behind players like Kyle Monangai and Zach Charbonnet. He buttresses that with above-average production as a receiver, adding six touchdowns through the air last season and a career best 54 yards after catch over expected (YACOE). In short, he has the chops to be a slightly lesser version of prime Kamara in his current form. We know what that means to the Saints and, importantly, how the presence of a useful receiver from the backfield can lift a struggling quarterback -- whether that's Shough or late-stage, dead-armed Drew Brees. The move makes sense, but it comes at a hefty price. The Saints only had about $20 million to spend this offseason. If Kamara isn't retiring, that's putting a lot of resources toward a position that already has a lot of resources poured into it. Etienne is a good player who'll now be paid like a great one thanks to the weak supply and high demand of the 2026 free agent marketplace. He'll be helpful in New Orleans, but perhaps not in a way that matches the Saints' investment in its backfield.Grade: B if Alvin Kamara retires, C if he does notOther free agent signing grades:Colts re-sign WR Alec Pierce for a whopping four years and $114 millionChiefs make a splash by signing Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker to revamp backfieldDolphins' rebuild lands on Malik Willis as a worthy QB gamblePanthers make 2026's riskiest bet on Jaelan Phillips' superstar potentialRaiders splurge big so Tyler Linderbaum can create space for Ashton Jeanty, Fernando MendozaThis article originally appeared on For The Win: Travis Etienne signs with Saints: Grade for Alvin Kamara's replacement?
