Mizzou Softball sweeps Auburn in crazy affair
Looking to secure their first SEC sweep of the season, the Tigers handed the ball to their respective game one Harrison-surnamed starters, CeCe and Ella, in what shaped up to be a truly crazy affair on Sunday afternoon on The Plains. In a game that featured four lead changes and a whos who of pitching rosters, the Missouri Tigers ultimately came out on top, winning 6-4.Lets see it how it all went down. Some Spring Cleaning in Auburn The Tigers complete the sweep and are officially 12-2 in their last 14 games! #MIZ | #OwnItpic.twitter.com/4UIjGrSmZ5 Mizzou Softball (@MizzouSoftball) March 29, 2026Auburn Strikes First, Ending Harrisons Day EarlyUnlike the first two games of the series, the blue & orange Tigers struck first in this one, taking a 1-0 lead in the home half that could have been a whole lot worse. An Alyssa Hastings one-out single was followed by a hit by pitch to put two on for Annalea Adams, who reached on a fielders choice. Shortstop Madison Uptegrove, trying to secure a double play, had a rare fielding error that allowed Hastings to score, unearned. How would CeCe respond to the adversity? After allowing a four-pitch walk to Haven Roebuck to load the bases, she dialed in, striking out the next two Auburn players to escape the jam. After a single that the second base(wo)man Smith couldnt make a play on, Hastings flied out to left for the final out. In the third, after a flyout to the center field warning track and a subsequent single to right, head coach Larissa Anderson made the change to Abby Carr for a bit of a different look. After inducing a flyout, MaNia Womack singled through the left side to put two on for Kyla Stroud. After advancing the runners on a passed ball, she walked to load the bases for freshman Ava Ratliff, whose two-run single to left allowed Auburn to re-gain the lead, 3-2. A slow roller to third ended the threat. Mizzou Offense Reemerges Kind OfSidney Forrester coaxed a two-out single to right in the top of the first, but a popout stopped any sort of momentum. In the second, Sophie Smith worked a 9-pitch one out walk before Uptegrove hit into a fielders choice that took the lead runner out at second. A strikeout ended the threat again. In the third, after a groundout, Addy Waits walked on four straight pitches before Stefania Abruscato struck again with her second homerun in back-to-back days and sixth of the season, giving the black & gold Tigers the lead 2-1. A groundout and flyout ended the Tiger threat.T3 | MIZ 2 AUB 1Make that five home runs in eight games for @StefaniaAbrusc1 #MIZ | #OwnItpic.twitter.com/KYPc0oGMSJ Mizzou Softball (@MizzouSoftball) March 29, 2026In the fourth, the Malveauxs made a pitching change of their own, removing Harrison for statuesque freshman Charley Butler (7.18 ERA in 12.2 IP) shes 6-foot, just like Carr. Carr, still in the game as a two-way player, hit a bloop single to center before being replaced on the basepaths by Saniya Hill, who took second on Smiths sac bunt. A fielding error by the pitcher allowed Kayley Lenger to reach first and Hill to take third, advanced the runners to scoring position, but when faced with a golden opportunity against a pretty green pitcher, the Tigers were unable to produce, with Claire Cahalan striking out looking to end the Tigers best chance to plate some more runs.Auburn Offense Refuses to Go QuietlyIn the home-half of the fourth, Auburns offense continued to show signs of life with a leadoff single to left before a groundout advanced the runner the second. A weird decision by Uptegrove, going for a non-force out at third instead of grabbing the surefire out at first, resulted in an offline throw which allowed runners at the corners and yet another pitching change Marissa McCann. McKaela Walker, aboard due to the aforementioned botched fielders choice, then stole second. What happened next Im a bit confused by, as Auburn runners tagged up and scored to take a 4-2 lead on a foul ball to left caught by a stealthy Cahalan. Should she have just let it drop foul to prevent the runners from tagging? I guess? An infield popup stopped the blue & orange Tigers in its tracks.Wildness EnsuesIn the top of the fifth, Auburn countered with yet another new pitcher, Abby Herndon (5.75 ERA in 34 IP), who allowed a hit by pitch to Waits before an Abruscato groundout allowed her to move to second (and then third on a passed ball). After a strikeout for the second out, Abby Hay hit a bouncer up the middle, bringing in Waits to score and make it that much closer, 4-3. Other Abby (Carr) then smacked her ninth home run to center, allowing Missouri to regain the lead, 5-4. This game was drunk, you guys.T5 | MIZ 5 AUB 4BACK ON TOP #MIZ | #OwnItpic.twitter.com/yQAm0h1wS2 Mizzou Softball (@MizzouSoftball) March 29, 2026When asked postgame about the difficulty in transitioning from hitter to pitcher then back to pitcher, Carr said, I think staying focused on each task and my teammates having my back and supporting me in both my roles I think whats really helpful, and I think thats why Im so successful is because of them.Playing against the shift, Smith was able to leg out a single when there was no one left to cover the bag, but Uptegrove grounded out to end the threat. In the bottom of the fifth, after a groundout, Stroud singled through the left side before a walk to Ratliff put two on with one out, but the next two Auburn batters fouled out, leaving the Good Tigers on top.Another Pitching Change? Why Not?In case you were keeping track of pitching this game, we saw what basically amounted to both teams entire roster of pitching, and the sixth was no exception. Game 2 loser, SJ Geurin, was brought in to face pinch hitter Nevaeh Watkins, who struck out, before Cahalan, with just her fifth hit of the season, tripled to right. Waits followed with a sharply hit single down the line in right field, easily allowing Cahalan to score and provide an insurance run, making it 6-4, before a groundout and line out ended it.The Tigers wisely stuck with their pitching in the sixth and seventh, with McCann going 1-2-3 in both innings to secure their first SEC series sweep since 2024. The announcers spoke with Carr postgame, who commended the teams bench depth. Each person is willing to step up at any moment, she said. I think really shows the grit this team has.To Review7 pitchers, 4 lead changes, 15 hits, 13 stranded. It was a day for the big cats. Auburn utilized four pitchers in this one: Harrison (3 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K) | Butler (1 IP, 1 H, 1 K) | Herndon (1 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 1 K) | Geurin (1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 K)Mizzou used three: Harrison (2.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) | Carr (1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB) | McCann (3.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K)UP NEXT: The Tigers return home to Columbia to face another set of Tigers, this time of the purple & gold variety, when they welcome LSU (23-12, 4-8 SEC) for a Thursday-Saturday series. I will be in Lexington for NCAA Gymnastics Regionals, so my colleagues Dylan & True will be manning the recaps at Rock M Nation.I think this was a huge success coming out, winning three games and going back home to host LSU next weekend, coming off the big win, and getting one at Alabama last weekend as well. It helped us bring momentum into this weekend, Carr said.
