  • 36th Rallye Catalunya-Costa Brava – 30 March-1 April 2000
Next year, in 2026, I will have been working as a photographer for 60 years. During that time, there have been enormous developments in motorsport, not least in terms of safety, both for participants, spectators and the press.
For the latter two groups, this has particularly affected the distance to the activities, but also how we position ourselves.
In these pictures from the popular hairpin bend in Rallye Catalunya-Costa Brava, where Gilles Panizzi made his famous doughnut two years later, both spectators and photographers are still close to the cars. Some of the photographers on the inside of the bend are even more exposed because they are kneeling and therefore cannot move quickly if something goes wrong.
On this occasion, I had chosen to take my pictures from the outside of the bend, where you are normally more exposed, but here I was protected by a low crash barrier and still got a dramatic angle on the cars.

    36. Rallye Catalunya-Costa Brava – 30. marts-1.april 2000

  • Piper Gilles / Paul Poirier 122.55 / 202.11

    Paul:

“We had a lot of pressure on ourselves after the performance at Skate Canada, so we needed to prove to ourselves that we are capable of this program, and I think we accomplished that today. The crowd has been so welcoming of us both. They really got behind our performance, so it’s been a real joy to be able to compete here this week.
We’ve had low levels this week, so we’ll have some things we need to work on. We do have a little bit of time now before the Final to clean some things up before we go out there, but I think we’re really excited to qualify for the Final again and to take the next step closer to the Games.”

On what has changed in their reimagined Vincent program:

Paul: “I think the biggest difference in the reimagined Vincent program is the skating. The skating is different because we are different skaters. We are better skaters. We are stronger skaters. And we really want the purity of the skating to shine in this program.
I think we’ve constructed it in a way that allows us to do that a lot more.“

On the support of her comments from yesterday:

    Piper:
“I saw a lot of comments, and it was really nice — especially from the fans — because we are speaking on behalf of the athletes, but also on behalf of the fans, the ones that are supporting us every single year.
It was nice to see them share that frustration, and I know it motivates the athletes to use their voice. I think a lot of times we are afraid of the repercussions of doing so, and I think we are at the point of our career that when we don’t say anything, nothing will change.
So I’m really proud of what we did.
We as athletes are accountable for everything we do out there on the ice, but I don’t necessarily think that judges and the technical panel are also accountable for what they do to the athletes. I think there needs to be an equal amount of respect between the two of us.
Hopefully we can get to that point, and I’m really happy that everybody supported us in sharing our feelings.”

  • Today we also remember Gil de Ferran, born on this day in 1967.

Gil was a double IndyCar Champion, Indianapolis 500 winner & British F3 champion.

The Paris-born Brazilian began karting in the 1980s before moving to British Formula Ford in 1987.

By 1991 he had joined Edenbridge Racing in British F3 and impressively took 3rd overall behind countryman Rubens Barrichello, and David Coulthard

He switched to Paul Stewart Racing for 1992 & won the championship after 7 wins & 7 podiums ahead of Philippe Adams.

Two years in F3000 brought 4th & 3rd in 1993 & 1994, earning Gil a test with the Footwork F1 team - a test compromised by a badly cut head after walking into a motorhome door.
There was a later test with Williams but Gil opted to move Stateside in the CART series in 1995 with Hall/VDS Racing for what would be the first of 9 years.

He took a first win in Las Vegas in 1995 having taken a first podium in Vancouver the week before, then won the opening race of 1996.

Three years with Walker racing brought another win in Portland before a big move came in 2000, to Team Penske with whom Gil spent 5 seasons.
7 podiums (2 wins) in 16 races saw him win the now-IndyCar title, secured with 3rd at Fontana.
He added a 2nd consecutive title in 2001, finishing runner up in Indy 500 - two years later he went one better, winning the great race from team-mate Helio Castroneves.

In 2000 de Ferran set a closed circuit lap record at the California Speedway - an AVERAGE of 241.428 mph

In all he won 12 of his 160 CART/IndyCar races.

Gil also ran & raced teams in IMSA & IndyCar, and was Sporting Director at BAR Honda, McLaren and more.

He sadly left us in December 2023 following a suspected heart attack while racing alongside his son in a private event in Florida - he was just 56.

A terrific racer and a lovely man

    Rest In Peace, Gil
