• Sivert Guttorm Bakken, the talented Norwegian biathlon athlete and Olympic hopeful, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 27 while training in Italy, leaving the biathlon community in deep sorrow. The International Biathlon Union (IBU) expressed their profound sadness at the loss, noting that Bakken’s journey back to the sport after being diagnosed with myocarditis, a heart condition, following the 2022 season, was nothing short of inspiring. During his career, he had participated in 31 World Cup competitions, achieving four first-place finishes, including a memorable victory in Oslo in front of his home fans in 2022. At the time of his passing, he was the reigning European champion in the 10-kilometer sprint and two relay events, actively preparing for the Milan Olympics. IBU President Olle Dahlin highlighted Bakken’s resilience and determination, describing his return to biathlon as a source of immense joy and inspiration for everyone involved in the sport. Teammates, including Sturla Holm Laegreid, shared heartfelt tributes, emphasizing how Bakken faced challenges with unwavering strength and became a role model whose dedication and perseverance inspired those around him. His legacy in the biathlon world and the lives he touched will be remembered with admiration and respect.

  • Hannah Lim and Ye Quan - President's Rankings

Quan: We feel good. There were a lot more people than usual for Ranking and so that was very exciting, very energizing. We’re really happy that we could perform in front of all these fans that came to support us.

Lim: After the previous competition, we didn’t go back to Canada. We came straight to Korea and continued to train at Taeneung. In the morning, we got to see the other Team Korea athletes, and since we are close friends, we were very happy.

Quan: We make sure to write down every day what we want to do – kind of like a detailed schedule so we know every time what we have to do and when we have to do it. It's kind of an agenda. We also have video calls with our coaches in Montreal to plan everything and make sure that mentally both of us are okay and are able to manage everything.

The team plans on competing at 4CCs

    On representing South Korea:

Quan: I’m really motivated and proud to represent South Korea. Obviously, it also makes us more motivated to aim for the Olympic games and to keep promoting Ice Dance in South Korea. I think overall we’re really proud and happy."

"I think this season, the biggest goal for both of us up to now, was to get the technical points higher. Before being junior we didn't need to think about it—it was working. Starting senior was kind of okay and then starting this season [the judging] got more strict and our levels were lower than usual, and we thought that we really had to focus a lot more on our technical quality just making sure they are consistent. Not just doing it once and it's okay, but doing it five, ten times, and I think that's the biggest hurdle we've come around so far. We've done two months of preparation after Osaka up to Chongqing in China, and I think that really paid off and that the technical aspect is getting stronger and more consistent."

On how they feel with the upcoming Olympics:

Quan: It's exciting and stressful at the same time. When we qualified at worlds last year, it was like “we qualified” but it didn’t feel as real as right now. Now it's like in about 2-3 months we’re going to be at the Olympics! It's a lot closer than what I anticipated from my career and very happy about that.

Lim: I feel like for me I’m not going to believe it until I’m on the plane to Italy. So, for now, it feels close, but it doesn't feel close.
