4 Takeaways From Night 2 of the 2026 NFL Draft
Night 2 of the 2026 NFL Draft put some prominent trends on display on both sides of the ball. Defensively, we saw an early run on defensive tackles, indicating a priority for coordinators around the NFL. On the other side of the ball, the tight ends who were drafted show how offenses around the league are emphasizing the position to create mismatches. Here are my takeaways from the second and third rounds of the draft: 1. Carson Beck and Drew Allar prove that traits still matter in scouting rooms Despite the skeptics dismissing the importance of size and tools in the evaluation process, the selections of Beck and Allar show that coaches and scouts are still chasing prototypes at the quarterback position. Measuring 6-foot-4, 233 pounds, Beck is a throwback with a classic drop-back playing style that would have worked well in the 1990s. The Miami standout flashes the ability to make every throw from the pocket with touch, timing, and anticipation. While he has some untimely turnovers that cloud his evaluation, scouts were enamored with his experience (43 career starts) and management skills as the leader of two championship-caliber programs. Allar measures in at 6-foot-5, 228 pounds with elite arm talent, but accuracy and ball placement issues. Despite his issues, the former five-star recruit logged 35 career starts, during which he flashed enough skills as a pro-style passer to warrant some consideration as a developmental prospect with starting potential. While his inconsistencies made it hard for some evaluators to view the Penn State product as a legitimate QB1 consideration, Mike McCarthys experience as a quarterback developer (SEE: Aaron Brooks, Aaron Rodgers, and Dak Prescott) gives Allar a shot to defy the odds as a potential starter. With teams looking for a quarterback with starting potential, the size and traits continue to weigh heavily in the evaluation. As a pair of highly touted quarterbacks viewed as QB1s of their respective classes at various stages of their collegiate careers, I am not surprised Beck and Allar came off the board in the third round as developmental prospects with intriguing traits. 2. Run-stoppers rule Night 2 The top of the second round featured a run on run-stopping defensive tackles, which was a direct reaction to the NFLs renewed emphasis on the ground game. Kayden McDonald, Christian Miller, and Lee Hunter were selected in the first 17 picks of Day 2. Defensive coordinators have leaned on general managers and scouts in this draft to add more big bodies to the lineup to help them snuff out runs directed between the tackles. With more teams favoring two-high or split-safety looks to eliminate big plays, defensive play callers needed more big bodies on the frontline with "two-gap" potential to win with fewer defenders in the box. McDonald, Miller, and Hunter excel at handling double teams, while also flashing enough quickness to win with finesse maneuvers (swim move). As the league returns to some of its rugged roots, with the running game back in prominence, the early run on defensive tackles is not a surprise. 3. New York Jets focus on changing the culture After a disappointing debut season, in which the locker room seemingly fell apart amid a mix of believers and non-believers feuding over the squad's direction, Aaron Glenn and Co. have made a concerted effort to populate the roster with "winners" from championship-caliber programs. With their first four picks, the Jets took College Football Playoff participants from this past college football season: EDGE David Bailey (Round 1 from Texas Tech), TE Kenyon Sadiq (Round 1 from Oregon), WR Omar Cooper (Round 1 from Indiana) and DAngelo Ponds (Round 2, also from Indiana). While the winning pedigree is rarely discussed in pre-draft coverage, teams covet players from winning programs because they understand the standards and expectations of a championship program. The Jets are not close to title contention, but the team is laying the foundation for a playoff run by adding a handful of rookies with championship swagger to a revised roster that added quarterback Geno Smith, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and linebacker Demario Davis in the offseason. 4. Offensive coordinators are stockpiling tight ends to create more mismatches The Los Angeles Rams opened up a can of worms with their clever utilization of "13" personnel (one running back, three tight ends, and one wide receiver) to create mismatches all over the field. Teams have started to manipulate the numbers at the line of scrimmage with multiple tight ends lined up close to each other to create extra gaps for off-tackle runs. The illusion of a run play with more tight ends can also produce big plays through play-action. Teams are also featuring more "YOZ" (tight ends lining up wider than wide receivers) formations, with the tight end's wide alignment forcing linebackers and safeties out of their comfort zone. Regardless of how they're looking to find an edge, offensive play callers have found a cheat code utilizing ultra-athletic tight ends on the perimeter. The 2026 draft saw XXX tight ends come off the board during the first three rounds, with a mix of "Y" (traditional tight end) and "FLEX" (H-back) playmakers selected on Day 2. The teams looking for throwback tight ends opted to take Nate Boerkircher (Jacksonville Jaguars), Marlin Klein (Houston Texans) and Sam Roush (Chicago Bears). Meanwhile, play-callers intent on finding mismatch creators snagged Eli Stowers (Philadelphia Eagles), Max Klare (Los Angeles Rams) and Oscar Delp (New Orleans Saints). With the game evolving to feature more multi-tight end sets, the run on tight end reflects the leagues changing landscape.

Wojo: Brad Holmes, Lions finally get edgy, leap for Michigans Derrick Moore
Allen Park See, that wasnt so difficult, was it? The Lions desperately needed an offensive tackle and desperately needed an edge rusher, but theyre known to be picky pickers.Turns out, this time it was easy pickin. When Brad Holmes strode into the media room Friday night after drafting Michigan edge Derrick Moore in the second round, his smile told the story. The Lions needs matched the availability, and Holmes jovial mood matched the moment. You gonna get on my ass now? Holmes said, laughing, happy to erase one edgy question, happier to get two players that fit their philosophy. Id say you could even detect a heavy sigh of relief from the Lions' GM.Holmes liked Moore so much, he traded up six spots to grab him, just ahead of the Ravens. The night before in the first round, the Lions took Clemson tackle Blake Miller, who fit their profile and should fit quickly into the teams most important unit.Theres a difference between a day-one starter and a one-day starter, and Moore and Miller have a good chance to be the former. The Lions finally spent sizable capital for an end opposite Aidan Hutchinson, after several years of plugging projects and prospects. At the end of last season, Al-Quadin Muhammad was manning one spot, and the former Saints sixth-round pick recorded 11 sacks, then headed to Tampa Bay as a free-agent.The Lions pass rush and defense overall has been a sore spot, depleted by injuries and unintentional neglect. Holmes hadnt drafted an edge in the first two rounds since Josh Paschal in 2022. He swears it wasnt an oversight, but knew it had to be rectified.Im really, really excited, because its hard to find those guys, Holmes said. Im not gonna say were picky, but we just have a certain type that we like and (Moore) fits the boxes. As many questions as Ive fielded, weve been pretty clear about what the requirements are at that position for us.Just like with Miller, Holmes said hes been monitoring Moore for a while, down the road in Ann Arbor. At 6-4, 255 pounds, Moore is a fierce, physical leader, but it wasnt until he busted out with 10.5 sacks last season that he gained the coveted edge label.Hes another one that has a (low-risk) floor coming in, but hes getting better and better and better, Holmes said. Just like I said with Blake, I dont see why thats gonna stop.Holmes and Dan Campbell unabashedly crave players with strong work ethic and character. That always eliminates some candidates, right or not. The offensive line was so stable for several years, it didnt need much help. But when Taylor Decker, Frank Ragnow, Kevin Zeitler and Graham Glasgow all departed in the past two years, the culture needed work. Penei Sewell, who likely will slide from right tackle to left, is the anchor that makes stability possible. The Lions signed free-agent center Blake Mays and tackle Larry Borom, but Deckers absence had to be addressed. In a deep draft, Miller was the fourth tackle taken, 17th overall, and his profile reads like a term paper written for Campbell. He never missed a start in four years at Clemson and said he only missed two practices, one because of a broken wrist. At 6-7, 318 pounds, hes a powerful run-blocker, an area the Lions wanted to shore up.Hes big, hes tough, hes smart, hes a finisher, Holmes said. He probably has no idea, but we've been watching Blake for about four years now, and he literally has gotten better every single year. I'll tell you what, when you think about Blake Miller, you sleep very, very good at night.Holmes expected to get another good night of sleep after landing Moore, who was chasing Hutchinsons UM single-season sack record last year. He finished with 10.5, shy of Hutchinsons 14, and couldnt think of a better place to start his pro career.Im definitely excited to be playing next to Hutch, Moore said. Hopefully I can learn a lot from him and we can go out and cause a lot of havoc. He can help me, I can help him.Thats the benefit of having bookend edge rushers, as Holmes has wearily heard again and again. It remains to be seen if Moore will make an immediate impact, but Lions fans are just relieved to have a shiny new option. And Holmes is ecstatic to quash one nagging narrative.Well actually, two nagging narratives. By unanimous consent, the Lions glaring offseason needs were offensive tackle and edge rusher, and Holmes nailed the main tasks quickly, and didnt have to settle for scraps.I couldnt be happier, Holmes said. Weve always said were gonna take the best player. There were other tackles and other edge rushers that were available, but these were the guys we liked. Derrick and Blake are both coachable. The passion for football is numero uno for us, and thats where theyre very similar, they both love football. For the Lions, thats a good place to start, at the most important positions to start. They have six later-round picks Saturday, and Holmes never rules out more maneuvering. But with the biggest chores out of the way, he can move without quite as much pressure, and a little better sleep.Bob.wojnowski@detroitnews.com@bobwojnowskiThis article originally appeared on The Detroit News: Brad Holmes, Lions finally get edgy, leap for Michigans Derrick Moore

Lewandowski to MLS? Latest on Chicago Fire's Pursuit of Barcelona Star
MLS team Chicago Fire are reportedly unlikely to sign Robert Lewandowski upon the expiration of his contract at Barcelona this summer, according to The Athletic. The Polish striker's deal is up in June, and he has been heavily linked with a move to MLS in the past. However, Chicago's interest lies elsewhere, especially with current striker Hugo Cuypers in fine form. A long winter of wooing Lewandowski Chicago reportedly pursued Lewandowski aggressively over the winter when it became clear that he would not immediately sign a contract extension to stay in Catalonia, but were unable to strike a deal. They were, at multiple points, in active talks for the striker, but a move never quite formulated, Lewandowski himself has admitted this future is up in the air. "I have to feel it. For now, I cannot tell you nothing (about what I will decide), because Im not even 50 percent sure which way I want to go. Its not for this moment," he said last month. Priorities lie elsewhere Chicago are now believed to have turned their interest elsewhere, with numerous European names expected to be available after the 2026 World Cup. Current No.9 Hugo Cuypers, meanwhile, has been in fine form to open the season, scoring six goals in five matches. He finished the 2025 campaign with 17 goals. Lewandowski's form dropping This all comes at a tough time for the Pole, whose form has dropped in 2026. After scoring 27 goals in La Liga last year, he has just 12 this campaign. Since the new year, he has found the net just four times in all competitions. It was a rough year for his country, too. Poland failed to qualify for the World Cup, leaving the striker, 38, unlikely to play on the world's stage in 2030. Chicago are on fire This all means little for the Fire, who have opened the season well. Chicago are fourth in the East, and are performing under former USMNT manager Gregg Berhalter. They finished eighth in 2025, Berhalter's first campaign in charge.

Charania: Austin Reaves expected to return for Game 4 vs Rockets
To the surprise of most, things have gone very well for the Los Angeles Lakers so far in their first-round NBA playoff series against the Houston Rockets. They have scratched and clawed their way to a 3-0 series lead after a gritty 112-108 overtime win in Game 3 on Friday, and things are apparently about to get even better for them.Austin Reaves, who has been out since sustaining an oblique strain on April 2, was abruptly listed as questionable for Game 3. He went through his pre-game preparations before the decision was made to hold him out of action. But according to ESPN insider Shams Charania, Reaves is expected to make his return in Game 4 on Sunday."When you look at the Lakers-Rockets series, Austin Reaves is on his way," Charania said on Friday before the start of Game 3. "He's getting closer to coming back from a Grade 2 oblique injury. My understanding is, Austin Reaves is trying to play in Game 3 tonight. If not Game 3, then Game 4. He started on-court work in the last several days. He's progressed through it. There's been no setbacks. You think about the timeline that Austin Reaves had earlier this month four to six weeks. He definitely has a chance to beat that by a hair."Needless to say, Reaves' return will take plenty of pressure off his teammates. He will give Los Angeles not only a big scoring threat but also another ball-handler and facilitator. Over the last few weeks, LeBron James, at age 41, has reverted to his old role as L.A.'s main scorer and facilitator, while sharpshooter Luke Kennard has played on the ball much more than he is accustomed to.Reaves averaged 23.3 points, 5.5 assists and 4.7 rebounds a game during the regular season. He previously missed several weeks in the middle of the season with a gastrocnemius strain.Meanwhile, Luka Doncic, who suffered a Grade 2 hamstring strain on April 2, doesn't seem close to returning. However, he has started doing some light shooting under the supervision of the Lakers' coaching staff. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: Charania: Austin Reaves expected to return for Game 4 vs Rockets
