Qatar Forward Sebastin Soria Could Become Oldest Outfield Player at a World Cup
Veteran Qatar forward Sebastian Soria has a chance to become the oldest outfield player to appear at a World Cup after the 42-year-old was included Tuesday in the country's preliminary squad for tournament. The Uruguay-born Soria was in a 34-player group selected by Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui, which must be cut to no more than 26 ahead of the World Cup starting June 11. If Soria plays at the World Cup where Qatar is in a group with co-host Canada, Switzerland and Bosnia-Herzegovina he will break Roger Millas record as the oldest outfield player in the tournaments 96-year history. Milla was also 42 when he played his last World Cup with Cameroon in 1994 in the United States. The oldest-ever World Cup player is Egypt goalkeeper Essam El Hadary, who was 45 years, 161 days, when he played against Saudi Arabia in 2018. Scotland's 43-year-old goalkeeper Craig Gordon should also be at this year's World Cup if he recovers from an injury in time. Sorias international career seemed to end in 2017 and he was not picked for the 2022 World Cup by the host nation. He was called up again last October and played in Qatars decisive World Cup qualifying game. Soria came on as a second-half substitute in a 2-1 win over the United Arab Emirates in Doha. "Thankful to God for letting me live this one," Soria wrote on his Instagram account after the game, "proud to wear the Al Anabi jersey once again and represent this beautiful country." Soria moved to play in the Qatari league in 2004 and was naturalized as a citizen before making his national team debut in 2007. Qatar starts its World Cup campaign June 13 against Switzerland in San Francisco. Qatar then plays Canada in Vancouver and finishes Group B against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Seattle on June 24. Rockies' $182 million contract with former Cubs MVP is MLB's worst
Rockies' $182 million contract with former Cubs MVP is MLB's worst originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Colorado Rockies would likely love to get this contract off their books. It may be a nearly impossible feat, however.Kris Bryant's seven-year, $182 million contract with the Rockies is regrettable for Colorado's front office.Since joining the NL West club in 2022, the former Chicago Cubs MVP has played just 170 games due to injury. Will the Rockies be able to find a willing trade partner?"Kris Bryant's contract might be the worst in the majors right now, given the fact that he hasn't played a game this season and there's a non-zero chance he'll never play another MLB game," FanSided's Zachary Rotman wrote Tuesday. "When it comes to being the most untradeable, though, I wouldn't go that far because of the length."Chronic lumbar degenerative disc disease limits Bryant from running or participating in sports activities.MORE:Reds' Elly De La Cruz makes baseball history not done in last 126 yearsEven if he does wind up getting traded, he won't be the centerpiece of the deal, writes Rotman."As bad as this contract is, Bryant is only under contract through the 2028 season," he wrote. "Even if Bryant doesn't retire before then, therefore taking his contract off the books, the length isn't such a deal breaker that if the Colorado Rockieswere to be eager enough to attach a prospect to get his contract off the books, they might actually be able to do so. It's a bad contract, but not the most untradeable."More MLB news:Three ways Pirates' Paul Skenes could lose NL Cy Young AwardAaron Judge makes baseball history never done before by Yankees player5 reasons to believe in Jordan Walker's breakout for CardinalsPete Crow-Armstrong is still struggling to hit well for the CubsRoman Anthony mightve been overhyped for Red Sox

Rory McIlroy's life off course ahead of PGA Championship gives him major advantage
Rory McIlroy heads into this week's PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club as the man everyone's chasing. The Northern Irishman, fresh from claiming consecutive Masters titles with a one-shot triumph at Augusta last month, is hunting his seventh major crown.Victory in south-west Philadelphia would see the 37-year-old surpass Sir Nick Faldo to become Europe's most successful golfer of the modern era.Experts reckon he's the one to beat, with analysts placing him alongside Scottie Scheffler as the standout favourites whenever they tee it up.It's easy to see why McIlroy ranks among the longest hitters in the game, his iron play is superb, and he's tightened up what was once a weakness around the greens.A freed-up Rory, they say, is a terrifying prospect for his rivals. But McIlroy isn't just dominating on the course he's loving life off it too.The two-time PGA Championship winner skipped the Cadillac Championship at Trump Doral after receiving an invitation he simply couldn't turn down.President Donald Trump asked him to attend a White House state dinner during King Charles's visit, and McIlroy jumped at the chance."I know how fortunate I am and so lucky to be in this position in life and sometimes you have to enjoy the perks because I know that this isn't going to last forever," he said. There's also a cameo in the recently-released Devil Wears Prada 2 to add to his growing list of off-course adventures."There's going to be a day where I'm not sitting up here and I'm not competing for major championships," McIlroy added. "So I guess while I'm doing it, I have to enjoy it."McIlroy's done his homework ahead of the tournament, making a day trip to Aronimink to scout the course. He played the venue during the 2018 BMW Championship, but conditions have changed dramatically since then."It was wet in 2018 and the greens didn't play as fast or as severe as what I felt like they played last week when I played," he explained. The course isn't particularly long, but those tricky greens are the main defence and organisers can tuck pins away if they fancy making life difficult.Getting an early look means McIlroy can take it easy during tournament week, avoiding those notoriously lengthy PGA practice rounds. He's planning just nine holes on Tuesday and another nine on Wednesday, focusing on club selection off tees and reading potential pin positions. This year feels different for McIlroy compared to last year's PGA Championship, where he finished tied fourth. After finally completing the career Grand Slam at Augusta in 2025, he admitted struggling to find that competitive fire again."I came into this tournament last year a little bit sort of uncertain of what my future was just like I conquered this thing that I wanted to conquer for so long," he reflected. But the back-to-back Masters triumph has sparked something fresh.McIlroy's realised his career is far from over he's still in his prime and has plenty left to achieve."Coming into this tournament feels a lot different than what it did last year," he said. "I feel like I've got some nice clear road ahead to try to get some more of these majors."Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
