EFL play-off halted after player accuses rival of 'discriminatory comment'
Tuesday night's Championship play-off semi-final second leg between Southampton and Middlesbrough was brought to a standstill following an allegation of discriminatory language on the pitch at St Mary's.Middlesbrough defender Luke Ayling accused Southampton captain Taylor Harwood-Bellis of directing discriminatory remarks towards him during a first-half exchange.Referee Andy Madley intervened to halt proceedings after Ayling received a yellow card in the 38th minute for a foul on Leo Scienza. The official spoke with both managers before confirming he would be filing a report on the incident. Fellow players in the vicinity reportedly also heard the alleged comments.Sky Sports reporter Jonathan Oakes provided further detail on the flashpoint at half-time."There were words exchanged between Luke Ayling and Taylor Harwood-Bellis," Oakes said."Ayling says the words that Harwood-Bellis used towards him were of a discriminatory nature, and other players around heard the comment as well."It prompted the referee Andy Madley to speak to both managers. Madley says he will be reporting the incident."The England international had thrown his arms up in protest after being cautioned, with Middlesbrough captain Dael Fry attempting to calm his teammate before Ayling confronted Harwood-Bellis directly. The confrontation between the two managers added further volatility to an already fractious encounter.Southampton boss Tonda Eckert and Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg had to be physically separated following a heated exchange during the stoppage.Hellberg was observed raising his voice at his opposite number while pointing and stepping towards him aggressively.Eckert responded by pushing the Swede's arm away before thrusting his shoulder towards Hellberg as he departed the scene. Both the fourth official and Madley were required to intervene and pull the pair apart before the match could continue.Riley McGree had given Middlesbrough the advantage earlier in the half, finding the net with a composed finish inside the area following a goalless first leg at the Riverside Stadium.Ross Stewart restored parity for the hosts before the interval, nodding home from close range to level the tie.The atmosphere between the two clubs had already been poisoned before kick-off due to Southampton's alleged breach of EFL regulations. The Saints face charges of secretly filming a Middlesbrough training session prior to Saturday's first leg, with the EFL referring the matter to an Independent Disciplinary Commission on Friday. Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
