Haaland Stays Hot: 4 Takeaways From Norway's Win Over Senegal At World Cup
Not to be outdone by fellow superstars Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbapp, Erling Haaland scored his third and fourth goals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in just his second match, helping Norway advance to the round of 32 with a 3-1 win over Senegal on Monday in front of a packed house at New York New Jersey Stadium. Hours after Messi and Mbapp each scored twice in their own matches earlier on Monday, Manchester City headliner Haaland converted twice in the second half to bring his goal total for his country to an astonishing 59 in just 52 international games. Here are my takeaways: 1. Haaland Is Embracing The Biggest Of Stages Four years ago in Qatar, France and Argentina faced off for the title in what turned out to be the greatest World Cup final ever played. The subplot of that match and of the entire 2022 tournament, really was the battle between soccers best two players. Messi was going for his first World Cup win. Mbapp, who scaled the highest mountain in sports as a teenager as France won it all in 2018, was trying to emulate the iconic Pel, whod led Brazil to back-to-back World Cup winsway back in 1958 and 1962. Club teammates at the time with Paris Saint-Germain, Messi scored twice in the final (one in extra time) to lead the Albiceleste to its first crown since Maradona did it in 1986. Mbapp notched a hat trick in a losing effort but earned the Golden Boot, his eight goals one more than Messis seven. Haaland, meantime, watched that World Cup from afar; Norway failed to qualify. Perhaps the best pure scorer in the game even then, Haaland is making up for lost time. Although the ponytailed striker missed two great chances in the first half of Monday's game, he took care of business in the second. His timing was even better. Both of his goals gave the Norwegians a two-goal lead, the latter canceling out Senegals lone tally just five minutes after the West African power had pulled one back. With Haaland in this form, theres no reason to think the Vikings cant make a deep run at this World Cup. 2. More Bad Luck For Senegal When Crystal Palace standout Ismala Sarr cut Norways lead in half shortly after Haaland had made it 2-0, it seemed as though the Lions of Terenga might be able to take at least a point from the game heading into their first round finale against Iraq, the last place team in Group I. Haalands second stopped that momentum right in its tracks. And while Senegal did get another goal from Sarr in stoppage time, it was too little and too late to prevent them from dropping all three points for the second time in as many matches. Following last weeks loss to France, coach Pape Thiaws team now must beat the Iraqis to have any chance of advancing as one of eight third-place finishers. And even then, it might not be enough. Luck just hasnt gone Senegals way this year. After beating Morocco (and their towel-stealing ballboys) on penalties in the African Cup of Nations final in January, they were unceremoniously stripped of their title by the continents governing body in March for leaving the field following a controversial penalty call in the championship match two months earlier. Now Senegal is on the verge of an early World Cup exit, with their fate resting at the feet of other results. 3. Norway Is No Longer a One-Man Show As "inevitable" as Haaland scoring is (according to USA striker Folarin Balogun),soccer isnt basketball, where one great player can make the four others on the floor competitive. It takes all 11 players to succeed in the planet's most popular sport. Dont believe it? Just ask Messi, whose supporting cast let down the GOATbadly in four previous World Cups and even more Copa Amricas before the current generation began winning finally won those trophies. Unstoppable as Haaland is he wasnt able to carry Norway to the 2022 event by himself. But his country has improved mightily over the last four years, and theyre showing it this summer their first trip back to the World Cup this century. Martin degaard captains Premier League champs (and Champions League runner-up) Arsenal. Four other members of the 26-player World Cup roster are employed in the English top-flight division, while others are scattered around the rest of Europes top club circuits. Indeed, it was a substitute who gave Norway a lead that theyd never relinquish; Marcus Pedersen, who plays for Italian Serie A side Torino, replaced the injured Julian Ryerson (of German titans Borussia Dortmund) in the first half. 4. Whats Next In Group I? Now that Norway has punched its ticket to the round of 32, theyll aim to secure an easier knockout round slate by topping the group. It wont be easy, as Mbapp and France await on Friday at Boston Stadium. As for Senegal, theyll no doubt try to run up the score in their final group stage match against FIFAs 60th ranked squad when they travel north of the border to take on the Lions of Mesopotamia in Toronto.

Giannis Antetokounmpo reportedly traded to Heat in blockbuster deal that spells the end of an era in Milwaukee
Giannis Antetokounmpo has been traded from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Miami Heat in a blockbuster deal, according to multiple reports. The trade culminates more than a year of speculation that the two-time MVP and franchise stalwart wouldn't finish his career with the Bucks team that drafted him. It arrives on the heels of 32-50 season in Milwaukee in which the Bucks finished nine games out of the playoffs.Speculation about Antetokounmpo's exit started before the 2025-26 season began. As the losses piled up, so did the tension in Milwaukee. After home fans booed the Bucks during a blowout loss to the Timberwolves on Jan. 13, Antetokounmpo pointed two thumbs down and booed them back. Antetokounmpo's final season in Milwaukee was also one that was plagued by injury. He remained a force when available, averaging 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game. But he was limited to a career low 36 games at 31 years old.Antetokounmpo sustained his second calf injury of the season in January. He returned to play six games in March but missed Milwaukee's final 15 games amid a lost Bucks season and the trade speculation that ultimately overwhelmed his final campaign in Milwaukee. That speculation only amplified ahead of the NBA Draft amid reports that Antetokounmpo wanted out and had preferred destinations.Bitter end to one of Bucks' best erasThe deal marks an end to the franchise's most successful era since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Oscar Robertson led Milwaukee to two Finals appearances and an NBA championship in the early 1970s. The Bucks selected Antetokounmpo with the No. 15 pick in the 2013 NBA Draft as a raw, high-upside prospect with an enormous physical tool set. He delivered on that upside and more. The trade of Giannis Antetokounmpo marks a bitter end to one of the best Milwaukee Bucks eras.Patrick McDermott via Getty ImagesAntetokounmpo spent his rookie season developing off the bench as a 19-year-old before joining the starting lineup full-time in his second NBA season. He made his first All-Star team in his fourth season in Milwaukee and has been an All-Star in eight seasons since, as a dominant two-way force.Antetokounmpo won the first of his two consecutive NBA MVP awards after the 2018-19 season. He also won Defensive Player of the Year alongside his second MVP award the following season. In 2020-21, Antetokounmpo completed his NBA resum. Playing alongside Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday, Antetokounmpo led the Bucks to the franchise's second NBA championship. The only major accomplishment now missing from his career as a pro is entry into the Hall of Fame, which is a certainty as soon as he's put on the ballot.Milwaukee's decline preceded Antetokounmpo's exitMilwaukee didn't maintain its contender status after winning the 2021 championship and hasn't advanced past the second round of the playoffs since. It's suffered first-round playoff exits in each of the last three postseasons. Middleton and Holiday are both gone, and Milwaukee's attempts to rebuild another contender around Antetokounmpo fizzled with Damian Lillard's Achilles tendon tear during the 2025 postseason. The Bucks exceeded expectations early in the 2025-26 season with a 6-3 start. But they quickly faded out of contention as the drama around Antetokounmpo's status took over. Now they'll engage in a full-blown rebuild following the exit of a franchise icon. Antetokounmpo is playing on a three-year, $186 million contract extension that he signed in 2023 in the aftermath of Milwaukee's trade to acquire Lillard. That extension includes a player option for the 2027-28 season. This breaking news story will be updated.

World Cup stars Messi, Mbappe, Haaland dazzle on same day
Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and Kylan Mbapp delivered dazzling performances on a showcase day for the World Cup's top scorers.Haaland scored twice for Norway in the first 15 minutes of the second half against Senegal on Monday night, making up for clanking a shot off the post and getting denied on a header just before halftime. His performance came hours after Messi and Mbapp each scored two goals apiece for Argentina and France. The three have scored a combined 13 goals in the tournament so far.Messi became the World Cups all-time leading goal-scorer with 18 when he and Argentina beat Austria in Arlington, Texas. He is leading the race for the golden boot with five in two games.Mbapp kept pace to get to 16 as France beat Iraq 3-0 in Philadelphia. Hes tied for second with former record-holder Miroslav Klose.Haaland has just four because this is his first time on soccers big stage, namely because Norway last qualified in 1998 two years before he was born. He also may have more chances to catch up since hes on the verge of turning 26 next month. The 6-foot-5 striker has now scored in 12 consecutive competitive matches for Norways national team. He has 24 goals over that stretch, and the last time Haaland did not score for Norway in a game that mattered was Oct. 13, 2024.He scored his first goal against Senegal on a 4-on-2 rush, putting behind him the frustration from earlier. After getting his second by banking a right-footed shot off the crossbar and in, Haaland held his left hand up to his left ear to encourage cheers of a large contingent of red-clad Norway fans.___AP Soccer Writer James Robson in Atlanta contributed this report.___AP World Cup: https://apnews.com/FIFA-World-Cup

How Texans rookie Keylan Rutledge is finding comfort zone at center, approach to competition: Want to go win it
Growing up in rural Georgia, Keylan Rutledge emerged as a big-time football player hailing from a small town.Carnesville has a population of roughly 730 people with one stoplight. The county seat of Franklin County, Carnesville is known for its Ty Cobb museum, livestock market and for being a historical and agricultural hub.Known as Big Red, the Texans future first-round draft pick met his wife, Lauren, in a high school weightlifting class. And the high school sweethearts got married a year ago with Rutledge decked out in blue jeans and cowboy boots, true to his roots.A former tight end and defensive lineman who had a long, lean frame in high school before growing into his current 6-foot-4, 316 pounds, Rutledge didnt play offensive line until his senior year. He was an all-state basketball player who set school records in the shot put.Although Rutledge was obviously a promising athlete, he was a relatively overlooked three-star recruit. He was offered scholarships from East Carolina, Old Dominion, Austin Peay, Gardner-Webb and Georgia before enrolling at Middle Tennessee State. Before he became an All-American blocker and team captain at right guard after transferring to Georgia Tech, Rutledge overcame a serious car accident when he swerved to avoid an oncoming car. His car flipped multiple times, landing upside down. A fractured left big toe got infected, resulting in a second surgery and avoiding a potential amputation. He earned the Brian Piccolo award as the most courageous player in the Atlantic Coast Conference and became the first Georgia Tech player since Calvin Johnson to earn first-team All-American honors in consecutive years.I can confidently say that Keylan is the toughest player I have coached, Key told KPRC 2. Theres a fine line between tough and being a psycho that he walks. Theres no one who loves everything about football, all the gritty work of being an offensive lineman, the way that Keylan does. With everything that Rutledge has endured, including the car accident and famously shrugging off a bloody nose to remain in the game against Clemson after shoving gauze up his nose, hes the last guy that would want to walk into a starting job simply because of his high draft status.Rutledge is approaching his battle for the starting center job with incumbent Jake Andrews the way hes always handled any football situation: with a hard-nosed, roll-up-the-sleeves mentality.Rutledge doesnt want to be handed anything. He want to earn everything he gets after being selected 26th overall in the first round.I had to scratch and claw for everything I want, Rutledge told KPRC 2 during a Houston Boys & Girls Club community event at Great Wolf Lodge. I wouldnt want to come in and be the Day One starter. I would want to go win it.Rutledge recently signed a four-year, $19.276 million fully guaranteed contract last week that includes a $10.479 million signing bonus, has been as advertised since his arrival in Houston. He has displayed a nasty streak and an eagerness to learn.I think its the same stuff that we saw in the draft process," said Texans offensive line coach and run game coordinator Cole Popovich, who worked out Rutledge privately in Georgia shortly before the NFL draft. He tough, hes physical. Hes really smart, picks up on stuff really fast."#Texans rookie first-round lineman Keylan Rutledge @Keylan301 on first few months in #NFL and competing at center and crosstraining at guard 'It's been great, learning so much, so many good vets to pick up on. .. As you get more reps (center), you get more comfortable.' Added he pic.twitter.com/S6J286ir81 Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) June 18, 2026Rutledge was entrenched as a right guard at Georgia Tech in a gap scheme. Hes an old-school, throwback blocker who started every game for two seasons.Almost all of his career snaps (98.3 percent) were at right guard as he took center snaps during the Senior Bowl all-star game.Rutledge started all 13 games at right guard last season and did not allow a sack and surrendered just six quarterback hurries in 872 snaps in 2025.Its a major transition for Rutledge, who has worked with the first-team offense occasionally at center and left guard behind Pro Bowl starter Wyatt Teller. Its been great, Rutledge said. Im learning so much every day just in terms of the scheme, understanding that, and theres so many good vets in there that you can pick up from the pro habits they have, how they show up to work every day. Its been great just bouncing around, doing whatever the team needs.WEBSTER -- #Texans rookie offensive likeman Keylan Rutledge @Keylan301 on giving back at Great Wolf Lodge @GreatWolfLodge to benefit @bgcghouston today, raising money for after-school programs @KPRC2 @KPRC2RandyMc @PrioritySports https://t.co/nDb3phJLEi pic.twitter.com/Ustt3ROyvF Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) June 18, 2026Rutledge is still working to get truly comfortable at center, especially on his shotgun snaps to quarterback C.J. Stroud.I think definitely as you get more reps, you get more comfortable, Rutledge said of playing center. I have done that before, but when you have your hand on the ball more, theres going to be some growing pains in that, and Im just working those out every day. Once you learn it, youre fine.Lining up next to Teller, known for his ability to finish off blocks and pancake defenders, is like taking a masters class for Rutledge. And their playing styles closely mirror each other.Hes been huge, Rutledge said. He kind of plays the game how I like it because he plays. Hes nasty. He mauls. Theres so much with that kind of swag, that kind of mentality he brings that I love to see. Just how to be a pro.Hes had a really good career, and hes getting up there in age. You see how he operates, and its been great to learn from him.Playing for Popovich, a protege of legendary retired New England Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarneccia, has been exactly what Rutledge expected it to be like.Hes all ball, Rutledge said. Hes kind of what you want in a line coach. You want him to be all ball. Every little thing you do wrong, he wants you to be on it. You want a guy like that to be on you. Its going to make you a better player in the long run.As a rookie, Rutledge emphasized he has no individual goals beyond proving himself to his teammates and coaches and contributing in any way the team envisions.Im not a guy that really sets big goals, he said. Hey, every day Im going to show up, kind of do the same thing over and over again. And all of them goals will come.Since being drafted, Rutledge has thrown out the first pitch at an Astros game. Hes tried several restaurants he has thoroughly enjoyed, especially steakhouses and barbecue joints.Houston has kind of taken me in, Rutledge said. Ive loved every second Ive been in Houston. Its my second home, and Ive loved it. Just welcomed me, and grateful to be here.WEBSTER -- #Texans rookie center-guard and first-round pick Keylan Rutledge @Keylan301 at Great Wolf Lodge throwing passes to kids from Houston Boys & Girls Club to raise money for @bgcghouston @GeorgiaTechFB @PrioritySports @KPRC2 pic.twitter.com/aZwFT6vFFv Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) June 18, 2026Rutledge is all about the team, the team and the team. You want to win a championship, he said. And I think weve established that over these last couple years, and thats what well continue to do. Hey, weve a lot of steps to go take that, but weve got an opportunity The Texans are preparing Rutledge to line up as soon as possible and are confident in his transition to the NFL.Keylan has done a great job, Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. Keylans moved around from guard to center. Hes done a great job with both. Really great communicator as a young player, aggressive, intense, just like the tape you saw at Georgia Tech, so its looked great so far.Im excited to see him as another guy, with all the rookies, Im just excited to see the guys put the pads on in training camp and truly compete, get the opportunity to play in some preseason games. The Texans offensive line has included returning left offensive tackle Aireontae Ersery, Teller, Rutledge, returning right guard Ed Ingram and former Pro Bowl selection Trent Brown at right tackle with projected starter Braden Smith working his way back from a neck injury from last season with the Indianapolis Colts. Teller, with the Cleveland Browns previously, has been the first-team left guard for the majority of the offseason workouts.Rutledge has already made a lasting first impression on hard-hitting Pro Bowl middle linebacker Azeez Al-ShaairThe best offensive linemen I know are like gnats, Al-Shaair said. You blow them away, you get off the block, and then by the end of the play, you just feel somebody breathing on you like, Man, get the hell away from me. Thats how its been for him specifically. There are times when Im over there thinking about punching him, because hes just right there, just on you and I love that. I think those are the best players at that position that Ive played against just wont stop. The mindset, the attitude, is stuff that is hard to coach. Its hard to coach somebody to be physical. Its just either you got it or you dont. Why did the Texans draft Rutledge and have such a strong conviction about the third-team All-American and first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection? A hard-nosed mentality, and a pile of bodies he left on the ground with a series of punishing blocks. The things that stand out about him, toughness, violence, physicality, his playing style, his intelligence, Texans general manager Nick Caserio said. Basically, the guy wants to step on your throat on every play, which I would say sort of embodies what our football team is about, the way we play.Intense, violent, physical. Were going to run the football this year. It was an area that we felt like we wanted to and needed to improve on during the offseason. Hopefully, weve done that.Rutledge tries to embody a serious approach to the game with every snap he takes. Its just who I want to be as a football player, Rutledge said. You want to be tough. You want to be relentless. You want to punch somebody in the face. You want to set the tone, and I think thats what I do.Thats what Im gonna bring every day. I control what I can control and thats how hard I play, how I finish, how I strain, how detailed I am. I think that comes with toughness, how you push through things when you dont feel right. Thats what I bring to Houston.Rutledge overcame that horrific foot injury and got back to playing football again at a high level. Its just a blessing, obviously, going through that car wreck when it could have been a lot, lot worse, Rutledge said. God had his hand with me. What happened to the foot that wasnt a good deal, and then obviously, getting infected. When you get a bone infection, its a chance that theyre gonna cut it off. And thats not good. God was just with me the whole time.Obviously, I battled back and found a way to get out there, and once, I found a way out there, two years of film and now were here. Just so blessed to be able to have this opportunity, and Gods been so gracious to me. Im ready to get after it.Aaron Wilson is a Texans and NFL reporter for KPRC 2 and click2houston.com
