Thats when Mark Richt and #22 Georgia went to Tuscaloosa to take on #16 Alabama and second year head coach Nick Saban. The Red and Black, keyed by Knowshon Moreno, Thomas Brown, and a high octane rushing attack jumped out to a 10-0 lead and led the Tide 20-10 with 12:15 to go in the fourth quarter.Then things got unnecessarily and inconveniently interesting for fans of the Classic City Canines. The Crimson Tide drove down for a field goal to pull within a touchdown, and the Red and Black responded by going three and out and punting back to the Sabanites (theyre in the Bible between the Ammonites and the Hittites, look it up). The Tide then took the air out of the ball on a grinding drive that ended with quarterback John Sarah Jessica Parker Wilson of all people running it in from 6 yards out. An extra point tied it up, and a Brandon Coutu missed 47 yard field goal as time expired sent the game to overtime, and the Tuscaloosa crowd into a frenzy.Georgia won the toss and gave Bama the ball first in the extra stanza with the Red Elephants settling for a field goal.The Tide led 23-20. The entire crowd into Tuscaloosa and a prime time television audience of millions sat perched on the edge of their seats.The tension was thick enough to cut with a knife. What would ESPN analysts Mike Patrick and Todd Blackledge have to say in this electric moment? Patrick obviously asked the question on everyones mind.Poor Todd Blackledge, not the most elusive guy during his quarterbacking days, was perhaps even less so in the booth as a broadcaster. Fortunately, Matt Stafford and Mikey Henderson bailed him out before he had to provide Patrick with a definitive answer:The Dawgs walked off the Tide 26-23. It was a singular moment in a season that contained a lot of highlights. That Georgia team would go on to dance in the endzone on the way to victory I. Jacksonville, to black out Auburn in Sanford Stadium, and to beat Hawaii so senseless in a lopsided Sugar Bowl that Thom Brenamen would worry aloud that they were hitting the Rainbow Warriors too hard.I maintain that the 2007 Georgia Bulldogs would have won a national title if only theyd gotten the chance to play for one.
