Here are takeaways from UL football's 2026 SBC Media Day appearance
NEW ORLEANS Louisiana football took the main stage at the 2026 Sun Belt Conference Media Day, giving Cajun Nation a bit to chew on as they await the start of the season.Fifth-year coach Michael Desormeaux and players Lunch Winfield and George Jackson represented the Ragin Cajuns and discussed what fans can expect this fall. Here are two things we learned about UL football from Media Day.For Louisiana football, youth is driving the shipEvery season is a new chance to rebuild a team and for Desormeaux, that rebuild this offseason will be fueled by young guys at skill positions on offense. After losing running backs Bill Davis and Zylan Perry to the transfer portal, younger backs are looking to fill those gaps. While a younger squad may make fans nervous, Desormeaux and his staff are eager for the challenge as development is a core of the Cajuns program. In the last two years we signed 41 freshmen and I think we have a lot of talented young players that are going to have to step up, Desormeaux said. Its a group that Im excited about and I think this team has a chance to be a real good thing if we can handle some things with maturity and grow our team up fast.In the running back room, sophomore Steven Blanco is the oldest returner while incoming transfer from Howard, junior Anthony Reagan Jr., has the most gameday snaps. Redshirt freshmen Darrell Smith and JJ Garner make up the other backs looking to carry the rushing load this fall.Darrell was probably the most consistent player in terms of production and assignment discipline from the course of the spring, Desormeaux said. Steven has a chance to be unique for us in the type of back he is as a big, physical downhill guy. JJ is truthfully the most talented top end, now hes just got to grow up in maturity and understanding the offense.Defensively, the Cajuns strength could lie in their secondary despite it also being on the younger side. Headlining the that group this fall will be sophomore cornerback Brent Gordon Jr., who led the team in pass breakups (11) in 2025. On the defensive line, UL has more gaps to fill with guys like Jaden Dugger and Jordan Lawson gone. Desormeaux will look for some young returners to step up and fill those roles such as sophomore defensive lineman Priest Ashe, junior defensive edge Lance Williams and more. He looks for ULs D-line to be its strength on defense.REQUIRED READING: St. Thomas More football relies on core O-line, new faces at helmREQUIRED READING: New and returning faces fuel Lafayette football ahead of 2026 seasonULs heart and soul lies within its returnersWinfield and Jackson joining Desormeaux at this years SBC Media Days to represent the Cajuns was fitting as they have spent their offseason embodying the UL standard.Between Lunch and George, these are two guys that I dont think anyone on our team would question who exemplifies what it means to be a Cajun, Desormeaux said. George is a sixth-year Cajun and has played a lot of really good football for us. Lunch gave our team life last year when we were on life support at the midway point of the season. Both returners will look to be the heart and soul for the Cajuns this fall. For Jackson, this year is nothing but a blessing as its his final year of college ball following an adversity=filled 2025. Listed at 6-foot-5 and 315 pounds, Jackson started the first four games of last year before suffering a season-ending injury. Its a redemption year, victory lap, its all of those to be honest because I feel like we have a lot of unfinished business we need to handle on the field, Jackson said of the upcoming season. We have a lot of returning guys such as me, Cooper (Fordham), Kaden Moreau, Matt Broussard. Then we also have guys like Zay (Alexander), who has made huge strides at left tackle.Along with Winfield and George, UL will look for its core returners to continue the foundation setting for the 2026 team.Shannon Belt covers high school sports and the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns for The Daily Advertiser as part of the USA TODAY Network. Kylian Mbapp Leaves World Cup With Legacy Intact, But Nothing To Show For It
By now youve probably seen the clip on repeat. The moment Kylian Mbapp realized his World Cup dream was slipping away. It was the 58th minute when Pedro Porro drove a right-footed shot into the back of the net, giving Spain the second goal in what became a 2-0 semifinal victory over France on Tuesday. Standing nearby, Mbapp watched the sequence unfold. As the ball crossed the line, he flung his left arm into the air, wiped his face with his jersey, then walked back toward midfield. One of soccers biggest stars and a player capable of changing a game on his own was unable to do so this time. Not against a perfectly organized and disciplined Spanish side that frustrated France at every turn and made the tournament favorite look ordinary. Afterward, Mbapp accepted responsibility. "You take all the glory when you win and when you dont win, you have to take the s***," Mbapp said in all honesty. "Its part of the game, its part of my game, its part of my life. And as the captain, I have to take all the responsibility. I have no problem with that. We wanted to go to the final. We didnt go." What does this result and France now preparing for the third-place match against England instead of the final against Argentina start to say about Mbapps legacy? Thats a word often thrown around during major tournaments, used as a measuring stick for the worlds greatest players, fairly or not. Entering this summer, France was expected to make a third consecutive run to the final. Les Bleus lifted the trophy in Russia in 2018, Mbapps World Cup debut. At 19 years old, he scored four goals, including one in the 4-2 victory over Croatia in the final. That made him only the second teenager in history to score in a World Cup final, following Pele in 1958. Then four years ago, Mbapp raised the bar by scoring eight goals in Qatar, including the historic hat trick that forced Argentina into a penalty shootout in what will likely be remembered as one of the best World Cup finals ever played. Mbapp, then 23, won the Golden Boot though he accepted the award with a blank expression, devastated that his squad couldnt pull off the comeback. This years tournament was supposed to be the next step in Mbapps rise. And things started out that way. The 27-year-old scored eight goals, tying Lionel Messi atop the Golden Boot race. But in Tuesdays semifinal, he managed just three shots and none on target. He let his frustration boil over when he was shown a yellow card in the 86th minute after he collided with Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon. Moments later, his free kick from outside the box soared over the crossbar. Weve seen Mbapp single-handedly rescue France. But Spain was superior. "Its a team that loves to have control of the game, to have control of the ball, and thats what we let them do," Mbapp, dejected, said after the match. "Its difficult when you dont change the play of Spain." Mbapp is sitting on 20 goals across three World Cups, only behind Messis leading 21. He will undoubtedly shatter that record by playing in two or three more World Cups. Even so, in the immediate aftermath of this defeat, the conversation around him has changed. He looked like the clear successor to Messi and to be clear, he still can be. The two found themselves on opposite ends of the 2022 final where they traded spellbinding moments in a performance that simultaneously felt like the continuation of a rivalry and the passing of the torch. At club level, he has yet to win a Champions League title and this past season at Real Madrid was disrupted by injuries and off-field drama. His former club, Paris Saint-Germain, has captured consecutive Champions League crowns while rivals Barcelona won a second straight La Liga title after beating Real Madrid in an El Clsico showdown that Mbapp missed. Still, he arrived at this World Cup looking as dangerous as ever. But with Spain and Argentina advancing, this years final offers another version of the changing of the guard with Lamine Yamal against Messi. Yamal, who turned 19 on Monday, will play in his first World Cup final at the same age Mbapp was when he reached his first. He has scored one goal so far this tournament and would have recorded another against France if not for an offside call. Hes yet to have his big moment, though theres a feeling that its coming. This could have been Mbapps time to lead France to a second World Cup title in three cycles and avenge heartbreak from four years ago. Hell be 31 years old at the next one, though if weve learned anything from this summer its that age doesnt necessarily matter. Either way, there will be a long wait for that next opportunity.

CBS Sports reveals how hot Bill Belichick's seat is in 2026
The North Carolina Tar Heels are preparing for year two of the Bill Belichick era in Chapel Hill. The hope is that things improve, following a 2025 debut season in which they won four total games. UNC missed out on a bowl game for the first time since 2018, resulting in the firing of Larry Fedora. So as we go into the 2026 season, it's an important one for Belichick and his staff. The problem? They have a very tough schedule ahead of them. Before North Carolina opens up Fall camp in two weeks, CBS Sports has released its annual "hot seat" rankings for every division one head coach. Unfortunately, for Belichick, they believe that the seat is officially hot for the head coach. On a scale of 1-5, Belichick's hot seat ranking is at 4.1 which is up from 2.1 at this time last year. It's also the third highest among coaches on the list behind only Maryland's Mike Locksley at 4.9 and South Carolina's Shane Beamer at 4.3. It's clear that Belichick needs to improve this season. North Carolina really can't afford another bad season under him, especially with how much they are paying him. Unless there is significant improvement in this campaign, it feels like there will at least be some hard conversations to have. Giannis Antetokounmpo candid about adjustment in Miami but flush with excitement: 'I think this is the right place to be'
Pat Riley found another way to describe Giannis Antetokounmpo on Thursday afternoon during the Greek Freaks introductory Miami Heat news conference. The longtime Heat president deployed a metaphor that encompassed Antetokounmpos grandeur. We landed a 747, Riley said of his blockbuster trade for the 6-foot-11, 243-pound forward, likening the two-time NBA MVP and 2021 NBA Finals MVP to an iconic Boeing aircraft known for transforming travel as the worlds first twin-aisle plane.Riley, a two-time NBA champion executive grinning throughout what could be a monumental day in franchise history, was simply paying a compliment to the latest star hes wooed to South Florida. Antetokounmpo took it in stride, but, about a half hour later, he alluded to it while opening up at the dais in a way that made him sound nothing like a revolutionary machine and everything like the candid human at the core of his worldwide influence. Now 31 after a tumultuous end to a mostly inspiring 13-season run with the Milwaukee Bucks, Antetokounmpo peeled back the curtain on the confluence of excitement and nerves he juggled as he navigated his transition to Miami.I was being a little bit vulnerable with him, Antetokounmpo said, recounting the phone call with Riley that marked his new beginning.I was like, I know you guys think I'm this big, tough beast, big plane and all this stuff. But at the end of the day, I'm human. I have my emotion. And I was like, 'I'm scared. I'm kind of scared. This is different.A deal that Riley said almost came to fruition in February, when it came down to the midnight hour, ultimately saw the Bucks send Antetokounmpo and forward Bobby Portis to the Heat in June. In exchange, Miami shipped off All-Star guard Tyler Herro, center Kel'el Ware, wing Jaime Jaquez Jr., guard Kasparas Jakuionis, the 13th overall pick in this year's draft which the Bucks used to grab Tennessee forward Nate Ament and future draft considerations, including two more first-round picks.Suddenly, the swirl of rumors came to a halt, and the conjecture about Antetokounmpos future could enter a deep slumber. He had the opportunity to focus on turning the page in his storybook journey. He thanked the Bucks and the city of Milwaukee, both of which clearly still hold a place in his heart, even after his messy final season with the franchise. That said, it wasnt until Wednesday night when Antetokounmpo arrived in Miami that it really hit him.Obviously, everything's new, he said. Antetokounmpo joked about not liking the iguanas yet depicted his reveling in the warmth. He discussed the weirdness of entering a facility thats unfamiliar, seemingly alabyrinth for now. Eventually, hell have it all down, but not knowing where to go to treatment or even how to access the court is a startling change for someone who had been living the same routine from his late teens to his early 30s.Im excited, though, Antetokounmpo said.Antetokounmpo didnt have to say the word explicitly. Excitement emanated from most of his answers to reporters on Thursday. He recalled watching the Heats Big 3, or the Heatles as they were nicknamed, as he grew into an NBA prospect. Antetokounmpo spoke of the respect hes always had for Riley, sharing that earlier in his career he even snooped around to check out Rileys office out of curiosity.Antetokounmpo pointed out who Heat culture is highly regarded around the NBA, admitting that, while with the Bucks, he and his teammates tried to recreate that. Now in Miami, the 10-time All-Star is embracing the chance to form one of the leagues most imposing frontcourts with center Bam Adebayo, a three-time All-Star himself. Between the two of them, they have 11 NBA All-Defensive team accolades. They're gnarly competitors, two-time NBA champion head coach Erik Spoelstra said. And if we're not defending the way that we want to, I'm sure that they're going to let everybody know. That's how you build a great defense. You have to have your best players really taking on that challenge. And we want to build a top-flight defense. Pat always says it. Defense wins championships, and it's true.A championship is what Antetokounmpo desires the most. He experienced what its like to reach the mountain top in 2021 when he led the Bucks to their first NBA title since 1971. After missing the playoffs this past season, the Heat are hoping to return to contender status, perhaps with the help of soon-to-be 24-year veteran LeBron James, too.Hes another plane Miamis trying to land, Riley said indirectly on Thursday. With or without James, the Heat will have Antetokounmpo, whose engine is undeniable. Although his work ethic was questioned this spring, he stressed to assembled media how hes so driven while acknowledging that talk is just talk."But I just love playing basketball, he said. I got on the court, I was able to talk to the coaching staff and the way they play and what they think, and I just want to be around them as much as I can, so when the time comes, and training camp comes, I'm ready. Not just I'm ready, I'm ready to help my teammates. I'm ready to give positive feedback to people that need it. And I'm ready for the challenge. As I said, I love pressure. I think pressure brings the best out of me. That's what I've seen so far in my career. ... And I think this is the right place to be.Antetokounmpo went one step further moments earlier in his availability. One of my goals is to win another championship, and I really want to do it, he said. Whenever I put my mind into something, I usually accomplish it. I feel like this is the best route for me to do that.
