SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJames Franklin's biggest gamble: Betting big on a former Virginia Tech coachCHARLOTTE You can usually count on James Franklin to say the thing you would expect James Franklin to say and do the thing you would expect James Franklin to do.Among the many college coaches who have turned an autopilot persona into tens of millions of dollars in career earnings, nobody has perfected the art of clean soundbites and zero risks like Franklin at Penn State. So it was no surprise that Franklins debut at ACC football media days, now wearing a paisley-patterned maroon tie instead of Penn State blue, felt like a concert of his greatest hits. When hes talking about the culture of the offseason program or the newfound millions Virginia Tech is pouring into athletics or why he decided to jump right back into coaching after his dismissal last fall, you could imagine Franklin giving the exact same speech in any schools colors. If you pay the man to sell Coca-Cola, hell sell Coca-Cola. If you pay him to sell Pepsi, hell convince you Pepsi is the greatest drink ever invented. There is, however, one topic Franklin cant explain with quite as much confidence. Even for a coach who has made a career out of projecting certainty, there is no blueprint for one of the biggest decisions of his current chapter. When he talks about hiring Brent Pry as his defensive coordinator yes, the same Brent Pry that Virginia Tech fired as head coach last year with a career record of 16-24 even Franklin cant sandpaper over whats obvious. The reality of walking back in that building and walking past the head coachs office, or I call him because I want to talk about something and Im sitting in his [old] office, Franklin said. If you dont have a real relationship and a tremendous history I couldnt do it. It shows his humility. It shows his love for Virginia Tech. But I think it also talks about our relationship. The personal dynamics that led to such an unusual arrangement are obvious. Jim Pry, Brents father, was Franklins offensive coordinator as a DII quarterback in the early 1990s. When Franklin got his first head coaching job at Vanderbilt, Pry was his most trusted assistant. At Penn State, Pry led defenses that were regularly ranked among the top 10 in the country.Their 30-year history has not merely been fruitful professionally, its built on genuine friendship and trust. And still, the awkwardness in this reunion at this school is undeniable. If we were [taking] one of these other jobs, he was coming with me, Franklin said. And when I said, Hey, if I take the Virginia Tech job, you got any defensive coordinators youd recommend, hes like, Well, me.Then it was like, OK, lets talk through this in detail, what its going to look like, what its going to mean and how were going to do it. Then you say we want to do this and you get into the contract, which is kind of messy. Youre trying to work through all those things and youve got to have real hard conversations on the front end.Theres nothing unique about a coach getting fired and taking a job the next year as an assistant to rehabilitate their reputation. Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkisian and Manny Diaz are among the current power conference head coaches who parlayed a coordinator stint into a second opportunity. But taking a demotion at the school that just fired you? Its unheard of and for good reason. When coaching tenures go wrong, especially at a school with Virginia Techs passion, the unpleasantness radiates to every part of life. In a small town like Blacksburg, theres nowhere to escape. When most coaches get fired, they want to get out of town as fast as possible and the fan base is happy to help them pack. By the end of Prys tenure, it was so ugly that the school had to make the change a mere three games into last season. It says a lot about Prys lack of ego that he would even consider coming back. He might be the only coach in the country that could pull it off.I wasnt really shocked, all-ACC defensive lineman Kemari Copeland said, I know his love for Virginia Tech and its a good thing [for the players] because weve been around him. If he were to go somewhere like Arkansas, hed have to get to know the players and learn a whole other culture. I think its an advantage for us.Whether its a good idea in this environment, though, remains to be seen. At a different school, Pry would be a big name with a good coordinator reputation. At Virginia Tech, every problem on defense will be framed by familiarity with his warts as a head coach.Thats an unpredictable and potentially volatile dynamic. Theres practically no precedent for it anywhere else. While theres a long track record on the football side of Franklins relationship with Pry to suggest it was the right move, theres a human nature component thats completely out of his control.I know he can do a phenomenal job, but theres going to be other issues that come up, Franklin said. I want to sit down and talk with him again because you get through the initial wave and theres still some other things. Theres going to be some differences for him and his family throughout the year that I want to make sure Im aware of and that Im being thoughtful about for him.I think the best thing that happened is when he walked back in and I introduced him in front of the team as defensive coordinator, the whole room gave him a standing ovation. I could not have written a better script because I think that allowed him to hit the ground running, too. Most college football observers believe Franklins arrival at Virginia Tech marks a real opportunity to revive one of the sports dormant powers. With two major donations totaling nearly $100 million since Franklin was hired, he has been given the resources to compete in the ACC and been granted a reservoir of trust that dried up by the end of his tenure at Penn State. With the unspoiled goodwill of a brand new fan base, any other coordinator hire would have been popular and noncontroversial. Bringing Pry back to the place where his name is associated with immense failure speaks to what Franklin thinks of him as a defensive coach and a surprising tolerance for public relations risk.Over his 15 years as a head coach, Franklin has perfected the art of driving the narrative around his program and staying relentlessly on message. But the way college football fandom works, its unavoidable that Prys performance will dominate the conversation to an uncomfortable degree.Coaching tenures dont usually rise and fall on a single decision, but Franklin cant afford to get that one wrong.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 187 Views 0 Vista previa

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHere are takeaways from UL football's 2026 SBC Media Day appearanceNEW ORLEANS Louisiana football took the main stage at the 2026 Sun Belt Conference Media Day, giving Cajun Nation a bit to chew on as they await the start of the season.Fifth-year coach Michael Desormeaux and players Lunch Winfield and George Jackson represented the Ragin Cajuns and discussed what fans can expect this fall. Here are two things we learned about UL football from Media Day.For Louisiana football, youth is driving the shipEvery season is a new chance to rebuild a team and for Desormeaux, that rebuild this offseason will be fueled by young guys at skill positions on offense. After losing running backs Bill Davis and Zylan Perry to the transfer portal, younger backs are looking to fill those gaps. While a younger squad may make fans nervous, Desormeaux and his staff are eager for the challenge as development is a core of the Cajuns program. In the last two years we signed 41 freshmen and I think we have a lot of talented young players that are going to have to step up, Desormeaux said. Its a group that Im excited about and I think this team has a chance to be a real good thing if we can handle some things with maturity and grow our team up fast.In the running back room, sophomore Steven Blanco is the oldest returner while incoming transfer from Howard, junior Anthony Reagan Jr., has the most gameday snaps. Redshirt freshmen Darrell Smith and JJ Garner make up the other backs looking to carry the rushing load this fall.Darrell was probably the most consistent player in terms of production and assignment discipline from the course of the spring, Desormeaux said. Steven has a chance to be unique for us in the type of back he is as a big, physical downhill guy. JJ is truthfully the most talented top end, now hes just got to grow up in maturity and understanding the offense.Defensively, the Cajuns strength could lie in their secondary despite it also being on the younger side. Headlining the that group this fall will be sophomore cornerback Brent Gordon Jr., who led the team in pass breakups (11) in 2025. On the defensive line, UL has more gaps to fill with guys like Jaden Dugger and Jordan Lawson gone. Desormeaux will look for some young returners to step up and fill those roles such as sophomore defensive lineman Priest Ashe, junior defensive edge Lance Williams and more. He looks for ULs D-line to be its strength on defense.REQUIRED READING: St. Thomas More football relies on core O-line, new faces at helmREQUIRED READING: New and returning faces fuel Lafayette football ahead of 2026 seasonULs heart and soul lies within its returnersWinfield and Jackson joining Desormeaux at this years SBC Media Days to represent the Cajuns was fitting as they have spent their offseason embodying the UL standard.Between Lunch and George, these are two guys that I dont think anyone on our team would question who exemplifies what it means to be a Cajun, Desormeaux said. George is a sixth-year Cajun and has played a lot of really good football for us. Lunch gave our team life last year when we were on life support at the midway point of the season. Both returners will look to be the heart and soul for the Cajuns this fall. For Jackson, this year is nothing but a blessing as its his final year of college ball following an adversity=filled 2025. Listed at 6-foot-5 and 315 pounds, Jackson started the first four games of last year before suffering a season-ending injury. Its a redemption year, victory lap, its all of those to be honest because I feel like we have a lot of unfinished business we need to handle on the field, Jackson said of the upcoming season. We have a lot of returning guys such as me, Cooper (Fordham), Kaden Moreau, Matt Broussard. Then we also have guys like Zay (Alexander), who has made huge strides at left tackle.Along with Winfield and George, UL will look for its core returners to continue the foundation setting for the 2026 team.Shannon Belt covers high school sports and the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns for The Daily Advertiser as part of the USA TODAY Network. WWW.FOXSPORTS.COMKylian Mbapp Leaves World Cup With Legacy Intact, But Nothing To Show For ItBy now youve probably seen the clip on repeat. The moment Kylian Mbapp realized his World Cup dream was slipping away. It was the 58th minute when Pedro Porro drove a right-footed shot into the back of the net, giving Spain the second goal in what became a 2-0 semifinal victory over France on Tuesday. Standing nearby, Mbapp watched the sequence unfold. As the ball crossed the line, he flung his left arm into the air, wiped his face with his jersey, then walked back toward midfield. One of soccers biggest stars and a player capable of changing a game on his own was unable to do so this time. Not against a perfectly organized and disciplined Spanish side that frustrated France at every turn and made the tournament favorite look ordinary. Afterward, Mbapp accepted responsibility. "You take all the glory when you win and when you dont win, you have to take the s***," Mbapp said in all honesty. "Its part of the game, its part of my game, its part of my life. And as the captain, I have to take all the responsibility. I have no problem with that. We wanted to go to the final. We didnt go." What does this result and France now preparing for the third-place match against England instead of the final against Argentina start to say about Mbapps legacy? Thats a word often thrown around during major tournaments, used as a measuring stick for the worlds greatest players, fairly or not. Entering this summer, France was expected to make a third consecutive run to the final. Les Bleus lifted the trophy in Russia in 2018, Mbapps World Cup debut. At 19 years old, he scored four goals, including one in the 4-2 victory over Croatia in the final. That made him only the second teenager in history to score in a World Cup final, following Pele in 1958. Then four years ago, Mbapp raised the bar by scoring eight goals in Qatar, including the historic hat trick that forced Argentina into a penalty shootout in what will likely be remembered as one of the best World Cup finals ever played. Mbapp, then 23, won the Golden Boot though he accepted the award with a blank expression, devastated that his squad couldnt pull off the comeback. This years tournament was supposed to be the next step in Mbapps rise. And things started out that way. The 27-year-old scored eight goals, tying Lionel Messi atop the Golden Boot race. But in Tuesdays semifinal, he managed just three shots and none on target. He let his frustration boil over when he was shown a yellow card in the 86th minute after he collided with Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon. Moments later, his free kick from outside the box soared over the crossbar. Weve seen Mbapp single-handedly rescue France. But Spain was superior. "Its a team that loves to have control of the game, to have control of the ball, and thats what we let them do," Mbapp, dejected, said after the match. "Its difficult when you dont change the play of Spain." Mbapp is sitting on 20 goals across three World Cups, only behind Messis leading 21. He will undoubtedly shatter that record by playing in two or three more World Cups. Even so, in the immediate aftermath of this defeat, the conversation around him has changed. He looked like the clear successor to Messi and to be clear, he still can be. The two found themselves on opposite ends of the 2022 final where they traded spellbinding moments in a performance that simultaneously felt like the continuation of a rivalry and the passing of the torch. At club level, he has yet to win a Champions League title and this past season at Real Madrid was disrupted by injuries and off-field drama. His former club, Paris Saint-Germain, has captured consecutive Champions League crowns while rivals Barcelona won a second straight La Liga title after beating Real Madrid in an El Clsico showdown that Mbapp missed. Still, he arrived at this World Cup looking as dangerous as ever. But with Spain and Argentina advancing, this years final offers another version of the changing of the guard with Lamine Yamal against Messi. Yamal, who turned 19 on Monday, will play in his first World Cup final at the same age Mbapp was when he reached his first. He has scored one goal so far this tournament and would have recorded another against France if not for an offside call. Hes yet to have his big moment, though theres a feeling that its coming. This could have been Mbapps time to lead France to a second World Cup title in three cycles and avenge heartbreak from four years ago. Hell be 31 years old at the next one, though if weve learned anything from this summer its that age doesnt necessarily matter. Either way, there will be a long wait for that next opportunity.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 187 Views 0 Vista previa -
