The gospel according to Kentucky football coach Will Stein
Every July, the Southeastern Conference herds its head coaches into one ballroom and asks each of them, politely, to explain why their corner of the sport deserves belief again this fall. Most arrive with the hedge built in careful qualifiers, a nod to "the process," nothing November could hold against them. Will Stein, thirty-six years old and the owner of a perfect, undefeated, entirely theoretical 0-0 record as a head coach, didn't bother with the hedge.Asked why the Kentucky Wildcats five wins last season, four the year before, without a top-50 offense to its name since 2021 should expect anything different under him, Stein let the question sit in the room a beat longer than comfortable."This is going to sound like really... I think because of me, to be honest," he said. "I think it's because of me. I think I know what it takes. I have seen it at the highest levels. I know what it takes to recruit at this level."It's the kind of answer that gets replayed for one of two reasons: the coach is a fool, or he's right. The comparison in the room was instant: Curt Cignetti, who once told Indiana fans, in essence, to go look him up, then backed it with a national title game and a Heisman winner. Stein doesn't have any of that yet. What he has is three seasons running one of the sport's most explosive offenses at Oregon, a 38-5 record, a Big Ten championship, a College Football Playoff berth, and, as of Monday afternoon in Tampa, the undivided attention of a fanbase that has waited a decade for someone to say something worth remembering.He knows how thin the line is between confidence and delusion, so he built the escape hatch in the same breath. "Is it going to happen overnight? I don't know. I really don't. If I had a crystal ball, everybody in this room would be really, really rich now," he said. "There's going to be bumps in the road. I am prepared for tough moments and tough times. I'm succumbed to that in our process, right? I already do self-talk myself about how I can stay neutral. When stuff is bad, I can stay as neutral as possible and be very diplomatic in my approach."That's the whole philosophy, stripped down: total belief, delivered by a man who has clearly rehearsed how he'll behave on the day the belief gets tested. "You just got to believe, man," Stein said. "You just got to put the ball down and play. There's really nothing else to be said."Said like that, it sounds like a bumper sticker. It isn't, not entirely. Stein has been building toward that sentence since he was twenty-eight years old, standing in the football offices at Lake Travis High School outside Austin, Texas, considerably more sure of himself than the job required."Yeah, I mean, one of the great joys in my life was spending two years with Hank Carter at Lake Travis," he said. "It taught me how to call plays. I was put in a situation where they already had won six titles, I believe, up to that point, and a coaching staff that was veteran, seasoned, and knew what winning looked like. Took a young 28-year-old know-it-all offensive coordinator from the University of Texas into their staff. It taught me that you can be normal and still coach football. You can have a family and life outside of football when you can. That brotherhood is still part of the coaching world that still exists. So I'm forever grateful for my time at Lake Travis."Two seasons and a state-semifinal appearance in each of them later, Stein had absorbed something more useful than any playbook: that humility isn't the opposite of confidence; it's what makes confidence survivable. He still talks about Texas high school football the way other men talk about the church they were raised in. "It truly is religion in that state," he said, recalling seven-on-seven tournaments held on Texas A&M's campus and a stadium so large it left a mark on a coach who wasn't even coaching in it that day. "Got nothing but respect for that state, the football that's played in that state and specifically Lake Travis."Kentucky is not Texas, and Stein isn't foolish enough to sell it as one. But listen to him describe Lexington, and the register barely changes. "The longer I live there, the more I am like, wow, this place is incredible," he said. "It's got everything that you want. Great food, nightlife, community, university. It's safe. Big Blue Nation." Then, in the same breath, the caveat that separates him from every coach who's ever fallen for his own press release: "It takes some TLC. You have to go attack. You can't sit back and wait. That's one thing I refuse to do at Kentucky: wait.He's already lived that line out once. Within weeks of taking the job, Stein pulled Texas A&M's defensive coordinator off a playoff contender and brought him to Lexington, then added an offensive coordinator out of LSU's staffthe kind of hires that say more about a coach's intentions than any podium answer could.None of this, Stein insists, is nostalgia. He grew up a Kentucky kid, raised on Wildcat football before he ever coached a down of it, and he still had to be sold on coming home. "I'm really excited about our administration, the direction that it's going," he said. "I said I was so fired up that Mitch brought me here. I'm also excited about what the future holds. "What made the decision possible wasn't childhood loyaltyit was walking away from a Big Ten championship staff and a quarterback, Dante Moore, he'd spent three years developing into one of the best in the country."That's why I'm excited. That's why I believe," Stein said. "Or else I wouldn't have taken the job. I would have stayed at Oregon, coached Dante, and stayed out there."That's the entire case, when you get down to it. Not a system, not a resumejust a coach standing in a Tampa ballroom betting a very good job on the idea that he's better than the box score currently says he is. Put the ball down. Play. There's really nothing else to be said.Kentucky won't have to wait long to find out if that was faith or foolishness. Stein's first game is September 5, against Youngstown State. His third is at Texas A&M. His sixth is LSU, at home.
