Promising results from new Aston Martin, says Newey
Fernando Alonso celebrates his 45th birthday on 29 July [Reuters]Adrian Newey said the new Aston Martin had showed "promising results" in its first on-track session at the Hungarian Grand Prix.Fernando Alonso set 13th fastest time in the session, 2.475 seconds from the pace set by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, but team-mate Lance Stroll had a rear suspension failure.Alonso's time is a significant step forward from the four-second margin that has generally separated Aston Martin from the pace so far this season.Team boss Newey said: "Very early days in terms of understanding the new package. Provisional results are promising."We will have some more steps in Monza and Baku, so it is the first part of our planned upgrade. Very short on parts so being careful with it and trying to learn all about it."Aston Martin's engine partner Honda will also take an upgraded power-unit to the next race, the Dutch Grand Prix, after Formula 1's four-week summer break. The car is virtually new, only the front suspension, engine and gearbox are the same as at the last race in Belgium a week ago.Even the chassis has been changed, with a significant amount of weight being taken out of it, needing a full re-homologation process from governing body the FIA.Stroll's left rear suspension appeared to break as he rounded Turn Three with about 20 minutes left of the session.Newey said in a news conference after the session: "Everybody is feverishly trying to understand what went wrong and it is only once we have an understanding that we can comment on what we do next."The area involved is not what has been changed, so in that sense it was very unexpected."Alonso was sent out straight away as soon as the session restarted.Lance Stroll climbs out of his Aston Martin after it suffered a suspension failure during first practice [Getty Images]Leclerc was 0.484secs ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen, with Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton third ahead of the second Red Bull of Isack Hadjar.Leclerc's session ended early when his car suffered a failure and he ground to a halt in the pit lane before reaching the Ferrari garage.Mercedes' George Russell was only fifth fastest, ahead of Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto.Mercedes reserve Frederik Vesti, driving the car of championship leader Kimi Antonelli, was seventh.Audi's Nico Hulkenberg and the Racing Bulls of Arvid Lindblad and Liam Lawson completed the top 10.Full first practice resultsCharles Leclerc has finished first and then second at the past two grands prix, at Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps [Getty Images]How to follow Hungarian Grand Prix on the BBCAlonso optimistic about Aston Martin upgrade - will it decide his future?Russell proud of resilience after string of problems

Maresca on City return, 'aggressive' football and Rodri speculation
Manchester City boss Enzo Maresca has been speaking to the media for the first time since his appointment. Here are the key lines from Friday's news conference:Maresca said it feels "very good" to be back at Etihad Stadium, having left his role as Manchester City assistant manager to become Leicester City boss over three years ago.On what excited him about the job: "I know the organisation quite well. When a club has only changed managers three times in 17 years, it shows how serious the structure is. The people here understand the need to give time for everything."Maresca has "no doubts" about following in the footsteps of serial-winner Pep Guardiola, adding that the club's decision to appoint him is a "privilege" and it will be a "nice challenge" for him.He continued: "I also understand the history of managers leaving after many years, like Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, and clubs always struggling a little bit afterwards, but it is a challenge for me to try to do the right things immediately for this club and its fans."On the brand of football he wants to bring to Etihad Stadium: "We will always try to be aggressive off the ball, control the game and be the ones forcing our idea - and, most importantly, try to win games." He also pointed to the "clear identity of football" he implemented at Leicester City and Chelsea. It is his "duty to find solutions" to Premier League teams relying more heavily on set-pieces and man-to-man marking - and he recognises the need to "adapt and evolve" as a football manager. He anticipates he will have his full squad back in training "three or four days before the Community Shield final", but the new boss is enjoying seeing "the young players who are full of energy" in action. On whether he anticipates more transfer business after securing Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson in a 116m deal: "There is always something to be done because of the dynamic of the transfer window. There are still a few things to do, but we are in the process of doing that."Rodri is naturally drawing transfer speculation because he is a "big player and now a World Cup winner". However, the defensive midfielder is set to have surgery on his back on Monday, then he will need a holiday to rest and recover before "being back here with us".He has "a good relationship" with Jack Grealish, who has returned from his season-long loan at Aston Villa, explaining: "Even when I left, we kept in touch. The reason for that is because he has a big heart and he is a very good guy." However, it is unclear whether his future lies at City.On Leeds United reportedly being in talks to sign James Trafford: "When the transfer window is open, anything can happen. We will see with him but, at the moment, he is still one of our goalkeepers."Watch Maresca's first news conference in full here

Senegals Africa Cup of Nations appeal date set at Court of Arbitration for Sport
Senegals appeal against the decision to strip them of the Africa Cup of Nations title will be heard on 8 October by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas). The team was controversially stripped of the trophy after walking off the pitch during the final against Morocco on 18 January. This protest followed a penalty award deep into stoppage time, which was subsequently missed. Senegal ultimately won the match 1-0 after extra-time.However, the Confederation of African Football (Caf) appeal board awarded a 3-0 victory to Morocco on 17 March, leading Senegal to appeal to Cas. Sports highest court confirmed the hearing date on Friday, noting that the Senegalese federation, Caf, and the Moroccan federation (FRMF) did not agree to an expedited procedure, thus following a standard timeline. The hearing will take place behind closed doors, Cas said, and it confirmed that a decision will not be given on the day of the hearing.Senegal were stripped of their 2025 African Cup of Nations title after being punished following their controversial walk-off in the final against Morocco. (AFP/Getty)The closing stages of the final in Rabat descended into a farce after a number of controversial calls from officials, players and management alike. The decision to award a penalty to Morocco after a VAR check prompted then Senegal coach Pape Thiaw to lead his players off the pitch. Brahim Diaz missed the spot-kick when Senegal finally returned, and Pape Gueye grabbed the winner in the additional period. The Caf appeal board investigated a complaint from the Royal Moroccan Football Federation that the referee Jean-Jacques Ndala should have ruled Senegal forfeited the match when the players returned to the dressing room for 14 minutes in protest of hosts Morocco being awarded a controversial late penalty.According to Afcon regulations, if a team refuses to play or leaves the ground before the regular end of the match without the authorisation of the referee, they will be deemed the loser and their opponents will automatically be given a 3-0 win, as per Articles 82 and 84.Caf has also confirmed it is following its own rules, saying in its statement that Senegal infringed Article 82 of the Regulations of the Africa Cup of Nations and in application of Article 84 ... the Senegal team is declared to have forfeited the match.

Braves' Ronald Acua Jr. Gives Fans Injury Scare During Rehab Start
Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acua Jr.Atlanta Braves superstar Ronald Acua Jr. is on the injured list for the second time this season with a left hamstring strain and is currently on a rehab assignment.Acua was in the lineup for Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday when they faced the Iowa Cubs. However, after a strikeout in the fourth inning, he was seen limping back to the dugout. He went 0-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout. The game was called in the fifth inning due to rain.Acua limping back to the dugout is not a good sign, but MLB.com's Mark Bowman reported that it is nothing to worry about."Ronald Acua Jr. is fine. His cleat caught in the dirt during that fourth inning strikeout last night, causing his foot to turn awkwardly. He walked it off and was fine by the time he got to the dugout," Bowman reported on X.Shop Our Best Offer!Looking for the perfect gift for a baseball player in your life? The Philadelphia Phillies are on their tail, trailing by 4 1/2 games, but closing the gap in a hurry. Getting Acua back could give the Braves offense a huge boost and help them secure the division. The Braves will need to pass either the Milwaukee Brewers or Los Angeles Dodgers in the standings to secure a bye.Acua was hitting .251 with a .793 OPS before hitting the injured list for a second time. However, he had a .270 average with a .907 OPS and five homers in his last 21 games. He was heating up at the plate.
