Insider: Lakers haven't talked about P.J. Washington, Daniel Gafford
The Los Angeles Lakers would still love to add a starting two-way forward to their roster this summer. They have been trying to land Jonathan Kuminga, but he has been increasingly linked to the Cleveland Cavaliers, especially now that LeBron James chose the Philadelphia 76ers over the Cavaliers in free agency. One other such player who has been at least somewhat linked to the Lakers is P.J. Washington of the Dallas Mavericks. He would be a more ideal option, as he's a proven two-way player and spent time alongside Luka Doncic in Dallas as part of a team that reached the NBA Finals in 2024.But it is unknown how motivated the Mavericks are to move him, and it is especially unknown how willing they are to accept L.A.'s meager trade assets in return. Additionally, Khobi Price of the California Post recently reported that L.A. doesn't want to take on the four years that are remaining on Washington's contract.Insider Jake Fischer said during a Bleacher Report show that the Lakers simply aren't interested in Washington or Dallas center Daniel Gafford, another player they have been linked to.I know Lakers fans want to keep drawing a line to a trade with Dallas for either P.J. Washington or Gafford because of their success with Luka Doni. I really dont have any inclination that the Lakers have had trade talks about either of those guys of real consequence this offseason.Washington is the type of player who could perhaps help turn the Lakers into championship contenders once this new-look roster gets some substantial reps together. He has career averages of 13.3 points and six rebounds a game, and he's known as a strong defender who is fairly athletic and can also finish in transition. At age 27 (he will turn 28 in late August), he doesn't seem to fit Cooper Flagg's timeline, and one would think that Dallas would want to move off his contract in order to retool around Flagg. One has to figure that there is always a chance that months from now, there could be some actual mutual interest in a Washington trade between these two teams -- or perhaps not. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: Insider: Lakers haven't talked about P.J. Dodgers Reveal Edwin Diaz Return Date From Injured List
The Los Angeles Dodgers are getting star closer Edwin Diaz back during their upcoming series after he has been on the injured list since April. Diaz went down with loose bodies in his elbow, something that ended up affecting him during his last couple of performances. The Dodgers took Diaz in for a deep scan and found that he had loose bodies in his elbow, an injury that is quite normal for a pitcher of his caliber who has been pitching for so long. Diaz had a drop in velocity during his last two outings, a noticeable dip that led to the closer overthrowing and not being precise with his pitches. Now, after slowly working himself back through the normal injury recovery process, Diaz is finally ready to complete his current lengthy rehab assignment and rejoin the Dodgers bullpen. When is Edwin Diaz returning?Mar 31, 2026; Los Angeles, California, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Edwin Diaz (3) throws against the Cleveland Guardians during the ninth inning at Dodger Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn ImagesManager Dave Roberts revealed that Diaz will be back activated on Wednesday, July 29th against the Seattle Mariners. Coincidentally, it is the same date as his bobblehead night. Before coming back, he will make one more appearance for OKC Triple-A on Sunday and then rejoin the squad on Tuesday for his return. He came out of the back-to-back well, Roberts said. We talked about him flying across country; it doesnt make a whole lot of sense.I think that hes supposed to pitch on Sunday, and then if that goes well, he should be back with us when we get back on Tuesday.Diaz has made six appearances, totaling five innings, including two hits allowed, just one run, one walk, and nine strikeouts. He also pitched with Ontario down in Single-A a couple of times and made some Arizona Complex League appearances. The main trend is that his fastball looks more lively than before, and it is proving to be quite effective. His velocity has been inconsistent, but it reached around 97-98 mph, showing the potential to touch his upper limit. Another Yankees star injured: It sucks!
PHILADELPHIA Standing at his locker, Yankees left fielder Cody Bellinger didnt sound too worried about the left hamstring discomfort that forced him to depart Saturday nights 3-1 win over the Phillies in the eighth inning. It just feels a little tight, Bellinger said. I really dont think its anything too serious. I feel like its on the smaller side. Thats just my honest (opinion). Thats how I feel.Manager Aaron Boone was a little more concerned.I dont want to speculate too much on it, he said. It looks like it could be something.Bellinger will find out Sunday if hell join two other main cogs to the Yankees lineup on the injured list, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. There will be tests for sure, he said.Bellinger broke a 1-1 tie with a two-out RBI single in the Yankees seventh, then got hurt the next inning when he rounded first base on a double to left field. He remained in the game for one more batter, Trent Grishams inning-ending groundout, then was replaced in left field by Max Schuemann in the bottom of the eighth.I thought I noticed it (when Bellinger was) going to second, Boone said, but when he waved me off right away I thought maybe he knew he was going to be a safe, so he just kind of pulled the chute a little bit and cruised in. But he said he felt as Grishs bat was unfolding that he would have had an issue scoring probably. At that point, he took himself out.If Bellinger goes on the 10-day IL, his left field spot probably would be filled at least temporarily by rookie outfielder Spencer Jones, who already has had three call-ups this season. The Yankees already were believed to be looking for a right-handed-hitting outfielder to acquire before the Aug. 3 trade deadline and Bellinger missing time probably would force GM Brian Cashman to be more aggressive in his pursuit. Options for the Yankees include three veterans who would bring some power and below-average outfield play the Giants Heliot Ramos, the Orioles Taylor Ward and the Royals Lane Thomas.Even though Bellinger still hasnt ended a homer drought that is up to a career-long 130 plate appearances, hed been feeling good at the plate again for a couple weeks after a month of terrible struggles.Bellinger went into the break stringing four good games in a row, then he went to Philadelphia and was the MVP of the All-Star Game. This mini streak has turned into a hot streak that continued when he returned to Philly this weekend. But now a Yankees offense that has scored three or fewer runs in 19 of their last 32 games could be without another star player for a whileIt sucks, Bellinger said. I know for myself, I hate going down. Its no fun being on IL. Its no fun. Ill see how I wake up (Sunday) and hopefully its nothing too serious.Read the original article on NJ.com. I Will Make My Way Back There Yuki Yoza Eyes Jonathan Haggerty Rematch After Rebound Win Over Ben Woolliss
Former ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Title challenger Yuki Yoza has been eager to put to bed the lingering memories of his first promotional setback, and he did exactly that in spectacular fashion at The Inner Circle 22 on Friday, July 17.He powered past Ben The Problem Woolliss to score a hard-fought unanimous decision on the blockbuster Asia primetime card inside the legendary Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, broadcasting live for subscribers at live.onefc.com.View this post on InstagramThe Japanese striking prodigy entered the high-stakes curtain-raiser still mentally processing his defeat to reigning ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Champion Jonathan The General Haggerty at ONE SAMURAI 1 in Tokyo this past April. Getting back into the win column meant far more than simply improving his record it was a definitive result the 28-year-old felt he owed to everyone who stood firmly behind him during that difficult stretch.Yoza told onefc.com:So many people supported me and helped me build toward this day. I wanted to win for them, and Im really happy that we can celebrate this victory together.I wasnt able to get the knockout, but I finished with a win, so Im glad that all of that work was not wasted.View this post on InstagramThe Team Vasileus star wasted absolutely no time setting a punishing tone in this bantamweight kickboxing tilt. He immediately found a home for his devastating kicks right off the bat, relentlessly working Woolliss midsection and calves, while his crisp boxing combinations proved equally sharp.Elite movement was the master ingredient tying it all together. His blistering footwork helped him stay out of immediate danger and played a pivotal role in dropping The Problem for a crucial eight-count at the midway point of the third round via a perfectly timed counter left hook.Despite walking away with his hand raised, Yoza wasnt entirely pleased with his total output against the man he previously labeled as a social media fighter. As such, he credited the incredibly tough Brit for the sheer grit he showcased throughout the grueling battle. He said:Im relieved that I was able to finish with a win. But in terms of the performance, I still have a long way to go. It felt like I was able to execute about half of what I prepared. Also, my opponent came in fully focused on beating me. Even when I hurt him, he kept coming until the very end because he was determined to win. It reminded me how difficult it is to face someone like that and make sure you get the win.View this post on InstagramWords From His Idol, Eyes On The FutureThat same steady, unwavering focus Yuki Yoza carried throughout the fight had a little extra help from one of the sports absolute most respected voices.Takeru Natural Born Krusher Segawa who recently bowed out of professional competition by capturing the ONE Interim Flyweight Kickboxing World Title at ONE SAMURAI 1 was standing firmly in his corner on fight night. Beyond simply being a stablemate, the kickboxing icon has long been Yozas personal idol, making the icons ringside presence that much more meaningful. The soon-to-be ONE Hall-of-Famer made sure to leave Yoza with some final, crucial words of wisdom before the latter stepped through the Lumpinee ropes.Yoza reflected:He told me, Believe in your own strength, enjoy it, and go out there and let loose. Those words helped me clear my mind, and I was able to approach everything from the walkout to the fight with confidence.Photo Credit: ONE ChampionshipWhen asked what comes next, Yoza did not hesitate for a single second to name the fight he wants most.He would gladly welcome a high-stakes clash against former ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion Nabil Anane a massive matchup both men have long expressed intense interest in. Beyond that, his sights remain locked firmly on unfinished business with Haggerty, who is already confirmed to defend his undisputed crown against Hiroki Akimoto at ONE SAMURAI 4 this October. The Japanese kickboxer concluded:When you think of a major name in the division, Nabil is probably the first one who comes to mind. If I receive the offer, I will absolutely fight him.[As for Haggerty], my goal is not simply to earn another chance. I want to take the belt from Haggerty. I will make my way back there. I will catch him and surpass him.View this post on InstagramSource

Boilers Sprint Past Langara Select in Exhibition Game 102-63
SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA - MARCH 26: C.J. Cox #0 of the Purdue Boilermakers dribbles the ball against the Texas Longhorns during the second half in the Sweet Sixteen of the 2026 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at SAP Center on March 26, 2026 in San Jose, California. (Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesFor the first time since 2022, Purdue fans got their first look at the Boilers without Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer, or Trey Kaufman-Renn on the roster. Those are some big shoes to fill for a program accustomed to needing to fill big shoes in the past but there are ample familiar faces that appear willing and able to do just that. In their first opportunity, Purdue blitzed the Langara Select 102-63 that saw old and new faces alike providing a sneak peek in to the 2026-2027 Boilermakers. Thanks to @kolby_knox for what appears to be an accurate set of statsor at least as close to what we will get: pic.twitter.com/Zw8iwQoQQE Jed Wilkinson (@PurdueWilkie) July 26, 2026Head Coach Matt Painter went with familiarity for the starting five as we saw CJ Cox, Omar Mayer, Gicarri Harris, Jack Benter, and Daniel Jacobsen start the game. It was a bit surprising to see both Harris and Benter start this game with the highly regarded transfer forward Caden Pierce available, but Benter showed his value last season at the power forward position goes much deeper due to his high ability to do everything well.Game 1 done. pic.twitter.com/74xmsVrNLP Purdue Men's Basketball (@BoilerBall) July 26, 2026These games are a lot more about finding things for players to improve on individually while also learning more about the team as a whole rather than simple wins and losses. In that regard, lets breakdown how each player looked in this first game:GUARDSCJ CoxCJ was just his usual, steady self in this game but notably played off ball similarly to last season. Cox flashed his efficient self shooting the ball going 2-3 from behind the arc and playing really good on-ball defense. Omar MayerMayers ability to get his own shot was apparent in this game and he is probably going to be able to do that against most defenders next season. Mayer wasnt very efficient, going just 3-10, but he showed his ability to impact the game through his rebounding (7). Mayer is going to have some big, big games scoring this season but hell need to fix the efficiency issues and work to make sure the ball doesnt stick in his hands early in the shot clock. Im not sure Purdue has a better late shot clock option than Mayer this season outside of freshman Luke Ertel.Gicarri HarrisIf there was one guy who made a statement for himself more than any other it was Harris. Although the junior guard got a late start this summer due to a broken nose, Harris certainly asserted himself in this exhibition. Although the shooting was a bit lacking, going just 5-12, Harris was 3-6 from behind the arc, had 4 rebounds, and 2 steals. A lot of focus has been on Mayer but Harris may be the one player to benefit the most from the graduation of Loyer and Smith.Luke ErtelFor the 2026 Indiana Mr. Basketball, expectations couldnt be higher as Purdue looks for the guard to take over for Braden Smith. Twitter is certainly pushing for him to start now following his performance but this is a vastly different team he is on now versus the one that was clearly lacking guard options when Smith entered as a freshman. That not to say Ertel wasnt impressive because he most certainly was and if he finds a way into the starting lineup, that speaks volumes about the level of player Purdue has.Ertel just looks comfortable playing at any pace the game is going and it doesnt feel like he is ever rushed. That was something I noticed watching him in high school and on the AAU circuits but really was apparent this evening in his first as a Boiler. There will be higher level competition moving forward but Ertel just has that Smith-esq edge to him about wanting to push the ball and find guys either diving to the hoop or spotting up for an open three. It just seems to flow easily for Ertel and he is only going to continue to improve from here.Luke Ertels first three possessions after checking in. 2 pic.twitter.com/jH6hon6ad0 Boiler Burner (@BoilerBurner1) July 26, 2026Antoine WestWest has always been known as a player who was elite offensively and this exhibition flashed that. West scored a team his 21 points on 8-11 shooting and 5-7 behind the arc and linked some of the comments made by Braden Smith last season for why West could become a big time part of the program. Itll probably be a struggle for West to find minutes this season but he could certainly establish himself in a role as a microwave-type scorer this season for Purdue. FORWARDSJack BenterBenter looked good but itll be interesting to see where he fits in as Pierce gets up to speed and Enzo starts playing. He is more naturally built for that bigger guard role with Harris but will it be beneficial to have those two split minutes when they both certainly deserve to start. Benter may be the best shooter on the team and he just makes everyone on the floor better because of everything else he does that doesnt show up on the stat sheet. Caden PiercePierce flashed the reason why he was a highly regarded transfer in the early parts of last season. He runs the floor at a high level and can finish well above the rim, as he showed in the second half off a pass from Luke Ertel. Pierce isnt going to stretch the floor at a high level but what he does rebounding, defending, and running the floor makes him a valuable piece of the puzzle. Pierces 4-5 shooting shows the potential as more of an old-school type power forward for the Boilers this season alongside some high level shooters.Luke Ertel to Caden Pierce 28 pic.twitter.com/8i4dMvsWU3 Boiler Burner (@BoilerBurner1) July 26, 2026Jacob WebberWelcome to the show Mr. Webber! The lengthy forward was regarded as one of the best shooters from behind the arc in the 2026 class and he showed that with his first shot attempt. In the first half, Webber caught the ball and elevated over a defender and drilled a deep three from the left wing. Webber ended up going 3-5 from behind the arc and a guy like that is going to be hard to keep off the floor if he can figure out the defensive side of the ball.Rivers KnightKnight looked good in his limited minutes but its clear he is going to need a year or two to really impact this roster. Thats not a knock on Knight at all as he would be a main contributor at several over B1G program next year, in my opinion, but serves as a reminder of the level of talent Purdue has from top to bottom of the roster.CENTERSDaniel JacobsenDJ still appears to be trying to figure out who he wants to be. Can be be a dominate center that scores and blocks shots at a level that can make him an All-B1G type player? Yes, and at times it looks like itll come easier for him than most. Then, all of a sudden, he struggles on both ends for long stretches in a game like he did against Langara. DJ was frequently behind on block attempts, took two threes that he missed, and just didnt appear to really impact the game on either side of the ball the way a 74 player should at this point in time.Raleigh BurgessBurgess looked really good even though he didnt score a bunch. Burgess is very clearly one of the players that other have looked to as a leader and the junior big man looks like he is fully healed after two years of being injured. Sinan HuanSinan didnt get a whole lot of minutes but the big man had a nice block and set some really solid screens. Its apparent he needs some time to develop but like his fellow freshman, Huan could develop into a big man that impacts the game on both ends at a very high level. Its very clear that, when Enzo is available, Huan is deep on the depth chart.OVERALL:Allow the hot takes and the over reactions to flow! This team was probably very similar to a 300+ Kenpom team like Evansville or Eastern Illinois. You can learn a lot of things from a game like this and the early ability to review game tape for improvement makes even a blow out beneficial to evefry player on the roster.

Last minute goal gives Chivas victory over FC Juarez
ZAPOPAN, MEXICO - JULY 25: Roberto Alvarado of Chivas celebrates after scoring the team's first goal during the 2nd round match between Chivas and FC Juarez as part of the Torneo Apertura 2026 Liga MX at Akron Stadium on July 25, 2026 in Zapopan, Mexico. (Photo by Simon Barber/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesA late goal gave Chivas their first victory of the Apertura 2026 by a 1-0 score over FC Juarez. Chivas was the better side from the start but their lack of accuracy up top made it seem like they would fail to get a victory at home, a week after losing at home against Toluca. Chivas will now travel south to face off their first away match of the season against Puebla while FC Juarez will hosts Pumas that same day.The 1st half started with Chivas coming for the first time in the season with Armando Gonzalez from the start. 10 second into the match, Jose Luis Rodriguez got off a left footed shot from outside the area that hit the post. From outside the area, Jordan Carrillo got off a right footed shot that went just wide. Off a corner kick, the ball was crossed to Oscar Estupian, who headed the ball wide. Off a longball, Estupian would get to the ball before Chivas goalkeeper Raul Rangel, but his lobbed shot went wide. After a better start from the visiting team, Chivas started to dominate possession but without creating danger. A cross into the area would find a wide open Bryan Alonso Gonzalez but his header went right to Juarezs goalkeeper, Sebastian Jurado. A cross into the area fell to Alonso Gonzalez but his left footed shot hit the post. After winning the ball, Rodriguez went on a 1 vs 1 against Rangel but he got off a terrible lobbed shot that went well wide, missing a great opportunity. A cross into the area from Luis Romo was headed from close range by Gonzalez but it hit the post. A combination play ended with a right footed in the area by Carrillo but it was well saved by Jurado. The halftime whistle blew and although Chivas had been overly superior, the match remained tied. The 2nd half started with neither team making a substitution during the break. FC Juarez started to get more possession as Chivas faltered after a good first half. Chivas subbed out Jordan Carrillo for Efrain Alvarez. Juarez subbed out Javier Aquino, Haret Ortega and Ricardinho for Francisco Nevarez, Jairo Torres and Monchu. A right footed shot in the area by Roberto Alvarado was deflected wide. Juarez subbed out Oscar Estupian for Luca Martinez Dupuy. The teams will trade possession but neither had created dangerous chances in a very poorly played 2nd half. Gonzalez would get the ball and go to the area, where he would get off a right footed shot that forced a save from Jurado. Chivas subbed out Richard Ledezma, Brian Gutierrez and Jose Castillo for Ricardo Marin, Kevin Castaeda and Diego Campillo. A right footed shot from outside the area by Castaeda would be easily saved by Jurado. A cross into the area was headed wide by Martinez Dupuy. FC Juarez subbed out Gilberto Sepulveda for Ricardo Juarez. A bad clearance would fall to Gonzalez in the area but Jurado blocked his shot from close range. Off a corner kick, a close range header from Alonso Gonzalez was blocked and cleared by Juarezs defense. A right footed shot from outside the area by Martinez Dupuy would go just wide. Off a corner kick, a bad mistake by Jurado allowed Alonso Gonzalez to get a header to an almost empty net but it went wide. Chivas subbed out Bryan Alonso Gonzalez for Jonathan Perez. In the last minute of play, a cross into the area was headed by Marin to a wide open Roberto Alvarado, who volleyed in from close range past Jurado to score and give Chivas the 1-0 lead. There was no time for more as Chivas rescued an important victory in the final minute of play. After a disappointing debut for Chivas, in which they lost at home against Toluca, the home side would bounce back with a victory. After failing to score against Toluca, Chivas offensive problems continued and they needed a miraculous goal to get them the three points on Saturday. Chivas will need to improve on offense but they were the better side and the victory was more than deserved. On Friday they will make their first away match when they travel to face off against Puebla. FC Juarez will try to get their first points of the season when they host Pumas.
