Veteran pitcher Lance McCullers has been designated for assignment by the Milwaukee Brewers less than two weeks after they acquired the right-hander from the Houston Astros. The Brewers announced the move before their game Sunday against the Colorado Rockies. They recalled right-handed pitcher Garrett Stallings from Triple-A Nashville. The moves come a day after McCullers walked four batters in 1 2/3 innings of relief in an 8-5 victory over the Rockies. McCullers entered with Milwaukee ahead 8-2 in the eighth inning and returned for the ninth, but he allowed a hit and two walks in that inning before Trevor Megill came in to get the final out. McCullers went 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA in two relief appearances with Milwaukee. He struck out five, walked five and allowed five runs (three earned) over 4 2/3 innings. The bullpen role was new for McCullers, who had started in 148 of his 154 career outings with Houston. McCullers, 32, had spent his entire major league career with the Astros until they sent him and left-hander Colton Gordon to the Brewers for minor league outfielder Jadyn Fielder on July 15. Houston had agreed to pay Milwaukee $4,227,273 to offset most of McCullers remaining salary, leaving his cost to the Brewers at $2.5 million. McCullers was on the injured list with shoulder inflammation at the time of the trade and last pitched for the Astros on May 13. He went 2-3 with a 6.86 ERA in eight starts for Houston this season. He began his MLB career in 2015 and owns a 53-40 record with a 3.85 ERA. McCullers was part of Houstons 2017 and 2022 World Series champions, but injuries kept him from pitching in 2019, 2023 and 2024. Stallings pitched three scoreless innings in two appearances during an earlier stint with Milwaukee this season. He has gone 3-3 with a 4.11 ERA for Nashville in 18 appearances, including 13 starts. This was something unheard of in Italy at the time. The Microbes, as they were called, were kids born in 1920 and 1921, trained twice a week, had tactical and behavioural lessons and started playing and winning around Italy.They became so famous that on June 11, 1933, they were invited to Vienna for a game against Wacker. The match was played before a 45,000 crowd, gathered to watch the national Wunderteam play against Romania. It was a 40-minute game.The Microbes managed to draw the match and with a bit of luck might have even won it. The tiny little Biancocelesti against the much bigger Austrian youngsters left the stadium to an enthusiastic crowd. For the Italian media, it was a triumph and when the kids arrived in Rome they were overwhelmed by fans, relatives and the entire Lazio first team.Among the players in Vienna, there was the smallest of them all, only 1.34 metres and nicknamed Squirrel. His name was Luigi Vettraino.Vettraino was born on September 21, 1920, in Rome and the story that has just been described is how he started playing for Lazio. He later grew to 1.60 metres and was the ideal attacking partner for Silvio Piola, the legendary Italian forward. The Squirrel was fast, imaginative, a good dribbler, powerful and acrobatic.Unfortunately, in 1941 he got a very bad infection and had to stop playing. His career was over at just 26. Detroit The line in the Tigers twice-weekly medical update said Jack Flaherty was completing rehab daily. Which meant he was not yet throwing. Which means his stay on the injured list might be a tad longer than initially thought.Its what I thought it was, Flaherty said of the inflammation in his right flexor tendon. I thought Id be throwing already and probably could be throwing already, but I guess (were) playing it slower than I thought. I thought Id be throwing.Flaherty came out of his start at Wrigley Field on Tuesday after four innings and placed on the 15-day injured list the next day. The earliest he could be activated is Aug. 5. Flaherty said he expects to know by Tuesday when hell be able to resume throwing.Thats kind of how these things go, he said. Im in a good spot. Well figure it out in the next couple of days.Manager AJ Hinch explained why Flaherty has yet to resume his throwing program.Were not slow-playing it at all, he said. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has called out the marshalling system during the Hungarian Grand Prix after backmarkers were defending their positions despite Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton approaching them during the final stages of the race.Several cars had already been lapped midway through the 70-lap race, and the last few laps saw a tight battle between Antonelli and Hamilton for the third-place finish.The gap between the pair was over 2 seconds. However, both drivers had to pass backmarkers, which proved difficult on a narrow track like the Hungaroring. The backmarkers are supposed to give way when faster cars that have lapped them are approaching, particularly after blue flags are shown.Antonellis Mercedes approached several cars that did not give way easily, such as Audis Gabriel Bortoleto. That led the 19-year-old driver to shout on the radio, complaining about the situation.
