SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRecords reveal what led to crash that seriously injured 49ers coach Kyle ShanahanA state database shows that 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, shown in January, was not at fault in a Palo Alto crash in which he was injured this month. (Carlos Avila Gonzalez/S.F. Chronicle) Authorities believe the head-on collision that seriously injuredSan Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan occurred after a 21-year-old woman made an unsafe turn while driving a Mercedes SUV in the opposite direction on a four-lane street in Palo Alto, records show.Shanahan was holding and using a cellphone at the time of the July 14 crash on Alma Street, which authorities listed as a factor in the accident, but he was not at fault for the wreck, according to the California Crash Reporting System, a statewide database of collisions.Related:49ers' Kyle Shanahan nearly lost an eye in car crash, friend saysPalo Alto police could not be reached Monday to verify the information in the database, which did not identify either driver by name. Neither Shanahan nor the other driver was cited. The crash happened at 6:12 p.m. on July 14 at Alma Street and Hamilton Avenue, near downtown Palo Alto. The database said the woman was headed north on Alma, and Shanahan south on Alma.Neither Shanahan nor the woman was found to have been drinking, according to the database. The airbags in the coach's black 2023 Tesla Model S and the woman's blue 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 each deployed, and both parties were wearing seatbelts. Both parties sustained injuries in the crash, according to the database, though Palo Alto police told ESPN the woman was unhurt. The posted speed limit where the crash occurred was 25 mph.The crash was first reported Saturday by ESPN, which said Shanahan, 46, suffered severe injuries that included a concussion, a broken left hand, a broken nose, three broken ribs and a facial laceration that required 40 stitches.NBC Sports analyst Chris Simms, a close friend and college teammate, said Monday that Shanahan nearly lost his right eye.Simms said Shanahan was leaving Palo Alto after receiving a chiropractic adjustment on the day of the crash.John Lynch, the 49ers' general manager, declined to discuss the crash during a news conference Saturday."I think I'm going to leave that to Kyle," Lynch said. "I think that's more personal because everything's secondhand. I don't want to get in because other people were involved, exactly what happened. There's a report out there and I think I'll just stick to that."Consistent with the state database, Palo Alto police Lt. Nicholas Martinez told the Chronicle on Saturday that officers did not issue citations or suspect either driver was impaired, adding that both stayed at the scene and cooperated with police.Martinez declined to provide specific details of the crash, saying collision reports aren't subject to public disclosure: "There will be no information released regarding the cause of the collision or who was at fault," he said.Simms said he was surprised the crash wasn't made public until Saturday."I was sitting there every day after it happened, going, Is the news gonna break today? Is the news gonna break today? Is the news gonna break today?'" Simms said on an episode of "Pro Football Talk."The 49ers reported to training camp Saturday, but Shanahan hasn't returned to full-time duties while he's still experiencing concussion symptoms. Assistant head coach Chris Foerster and the team's offensive and defensive coordinators are filling Shanahan's role.Shanahan has been on the field for part of the 49ers' first two practices. He has stood about 30 yards behind the defense and observed team drills with Lynch while wearing sunglasses and sporting a cast on his left hand."Kyle basically is going to be in the (concussion) protocol and all the great doctors we have are giving him great care," Lynch said. "We're going to let the condition (and) the doctors dictate how he comes back, when he comes back."Aidin Vaziri contributed to this report.SubscribeTheres more to San Francisco with the Chronicle. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJohn Stones makes final decision on new club after leaving Manchester CityJohn Stones makes final decision on new club after leaving Manchester CityJohn Stones has opted to join Serie A champions Inter Milan after leaving Man City this summerThe deal runs until June 2028 at a salary of around 4 million net per seasonStones left the Etihad Stadium after a decade of service having won every major trophy availableFormer Manchester City defender John Stones has now selected his next club after leaving the Etihad Stadium at the end of the 2025-26 season. The 32-year-old has opted to join Italian Serie A champions Inter Milan, with an agreement now in place over contractual terms a deal running until June 2028 with no option of a further 12 months, and a salary worth around 4 million net per season.Stones joined Manchester City from Everton in August 2016 for an initial 47.5 million, going on to spend a decade at the club and winning six Premier League titles, the Champions League, three FA Cups and three EFL Cups across a career at the Etihad Stadium that cemented his status as one of the finest ball-playing defenders of his generation. His final season at the club brought one last piece of silverware an FA Cup winners medal before he departed as a free agent on 1 July 2026, leaving behind a squad now being rebuilt under new manager Enzo Maresca and director of football Hugo Viana. The move to Inter represents a significant opportunity for Stones to extend his career at the highest level of European football, with the Serie A champions having identified the England international as an experienced, technically accomplished option capable of competing across both domestic and Champions League campaigns in the years ahead.Report: Romano confirms Inter deal as Stones picks Serie A over Premier League returnAs reported by Fabrizio Romano, Stones has opted for Inter Milan, with approval now in place on all contractual terms a move that sees the centre-back depart English football for the first time in his senior career, having made over 300 appearances across Barnsley, Everton and Manchester City. The two-year deal without an extension option reflects both the stage of Stoness career and Inters preference for a defined, structured commitment rather than an open-ended arrangement, with the Italian champions understood to have identified the 32-year-old as an immediate first-team option rather than a long-term investment. The salary of around 4 million net per season is a significant step down from what Stones would have commanded at his peak years ago, and reflects the pragmatic approach he and his representatives have taken to securing the right footballing environment rather than the most financially lucrative offer available.Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Atletico Madrid had each been linked with interest in Stones at various stages of the summer, but it is the San Siro that has won his signature with the lure of playing for one of Europes most storied clubs in a new country at the final stage of a remarkable career proving the deciding factor. What does Stoness departure mean for Manchester City?Stoness exit draws a line under one of the most important defensive partnerships in Manchester Citys recent history, with the Barnsley-born defender having been a central figure in the squad across the full span of Pep Guardiolas decade at the club.Viana and Maresca have already begun to address the gap left by his departure, with Marc Guehi having joined the club earlier in 2026 and Vitor Reis returning from his loan spell at Girona to press his case for a role in the new managers defensive plans. The depth of experience Stones carried not just the trophies, but the understanding of how to manage big games, big moments and the demands of a club that operates at the very top of the game at all times is not something that can be immediately replicated by a younger player, and Maresca will be acutely aware of that deficit as he shapes his defensive options for the campaign ahead.Whether the nine-year relationship between Stones and the Etihad Stadium produces a fairytale return at some point, or whether the chapter closes permanently with his move to Milan, the contribution he made across a decade of extraordinary success at Manchester City will ensure his name endures long after the contracts have run their course.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 21 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLeeds United Set for Club-Record James Trafford SigningLeeds United Set for Club-Record James Trafford SigningLeeds United have agreed to a club-record move for England international goalkeeper James Trafford, as per journalist David Ornstein. Daniel Farkes side set their sights on the 23-year-old goalkeeper and have managed to convince Manchester City to part ways with him on a permanent basis. The Yorkshire club will pay 40 million plus add-ons to sign the former Burnley man, who was at the FIFA World Cup this summer. Trafford will get a chance to be first-choice between the sticks at Elland Road, having spent most of the 2025-26 season on the bench at Manchester City. The Cityzens re-signed academy graduate Trafford after a fine season at Burley in the Championship with the aim of having him start between the sticks for them. The signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma a few weeks later put paid to his ambition of starting regularly, and he became the clubs go-to man for cup competitions. Trafford made just 17 appearances across all competitions for Manchester City and has now decided to leave the club in search of regular minutes. His 40 million fee would exceed the previous club record of 35.5 million paid for Georginio Rutter in January 2023. They have been active in this window, bringing in defender Tarik Muharemovic and forward Harry Wilson. Why Leeds United is perfect for James TraffordJames Trafford is moving to Leeds United at a time when their number one shirt is up for grabs. Leeds United have let go of two of their three senior goalkeepers from the 2025-26 season, leaving them very light in the goalkeeping department. Karl Darlow, who played over half of their Premier League games, has left the club to join Manchester United as a free agent. Similarly, Illan Meslier has moved to Arsenal for free, as well, leaving only Lucas Perri at the club. Perri failed to perform consistently for the club, leading to their pursuit of Trafford this summer. James Trafford is one of the best young goalkeepers in the world and has been touted as Englands next number one. The move to Elland Road will give him the perfect platform to launch his career as a top-flight goalkeeper, and is an opportunity he will grab with both hands.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 23 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'Every country wants to beat Nigeria' - Super Falcons hunt 11th Wafcon titleNigeria have won 10 out of 13 editions of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations since it began in 1998 [Getty Images]Nigeria arrived in Morocco for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) carrying a familiar burden of expectation.Having claimed a record-extending 10th title in the North African kingdom last July - a campaign dubbed "Mission X" - the Super Falcons remain the benchmark in African women's football. The challenge now is to retain their crown, something they last managed in 2018, the culmination of a hat-trick of titles."Now that we are champions, every other team will want to draw you down," head coach Justin Madugu, who masterminded last year's title charge which concluded in a 3-2 victory over the hosts, told BBC Sport Africa"It's not going to be easy. We are quite aware of that and we are going to be fully ready."Nigeria begin against debutants Malawi on Tuesday before also facing Zambia and Egypt in Group C."Every country wants to beat Nigeria," said assistant coach Ann Chiejine, a four-time Wafcon winner as a player."That is why we must up our game by making sure we train harder."The squad contains some of the most recognisable names in African football.Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, named best player at last year's tournament, Chiamaka Nnadozie, the current African goalkeeper of the year, and six-time African player of the year Asisat Oshoala will provide experience and leadership. But Madugu has also chosen to weave in a number of young players, including striker Joy Omewa, who plays her club football in Sweden and observed last year's Wafcon triumph from afar."The last one was really exciting to watch. All the games were really good."I think this year it's going to be even bigger."All you need to know about Wafcon 2026'Not under any pressure'Nigeria are one of only three nations to lift the Wafcon trophy.Their dominance is such that they have claimed 10 of the 13 titles dating back to 1998, with only Equatorial Guinea (2008 and 2012) and South Africa (2022) able to break their stranglehold. This time around they face greater competition, if only by weight of numbers after the tournament was expanded from 12 to 16 teams. There is also more at stake because Wafcon doubles as a qualifying competition for next year's Fifa Women's World Cup in Brazil, with the four semi-finalists all guaranteed a place in Brazil."Our first target is to qualify for the World Cup. After that we can think of defending our title," winger Francisca Ordega told BBC Sport Africa."We are not under any kind of pressure. We can hold our own against any team across Africa."Nigeria have represented the continent at all nine World Cups since the first was held in China in 1991.In 2023, a record four nations travelled to Australia and New Zealand, with the West Africans being joined by South Africa and debutants Morocco and Zambia."We have come of age," said Cheijine when discussing improvements in the African game."If we are now being beaten by penalty shootout, or 1-0, 2-0, it means that the graph is rising."In Morocco, Cape Verde and Malawi are the two countries making their maiden Wafcon appearances.Malawi may be ranked 153rd in the world, compared to Nigeria in 36th, but the Scorchers boast a fearsome attack with proven pedigree in the form of the Chawinga sisters, Tabitha and Temwa.Older sister Tabitha scored the goals which fired Lyon to a fifth consecutive league title in France last season.Temwa, meanwhile, has won the National Women's Soccer League golden boot and MVP awards in both of her two full seasons with Kansas City Current.Nigeria will also have to be on their guard against Zambia's experienced strike duo Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji, both of whom also play in the USA."You don't want to undermine or underestimate what anybody can do," Madugu said on the eve of the team's opening fixture, with Ajibade cautioning that Malawi's qualification shows "the progress they're making".Seven stars to watch at Wafcon 2026 and why'Motherhood should not be the end of anyone's story'A blend of youth and experienceSix-time African player of the year Asisat Oshoala will again be part of Nigeria's attack at the 2026 Wafcon in Morocco [Getty Images]While previous Wafcons have seen Nigeria's preparation time limited, Madugu and his staff have had the luxury of multiple friendlies to run the rule over the current squad.A double-header against Cameroon in the early months of the year was followed by two warm-up matches against Senegal in June and a victory over Tanzania last week.Twenty-one-year-old goalkeeper Comfort Erhabor, the backup to Nnadozie, is among the fresh faces brought in by Madugu.Born in the Netherlands and raised in England, she made her debut against Cameroon."The trust he [Madugu] puts in us young players is something I respect a lot," she said."I didn't expect to get along so quickly and so well with the team. But they received me with open arms."Erhabor currently plays in the third tier of English football for Portsmouth, a city just over an hour's drive along the south coast to Brighton, which is where Nnadozie plies her trade.Describing Nigeria's number one as like "a big sister" who she hangs out with, she says it was a "no brainer" when it came to choosing her international allegiance."It's in my blood, so I felt like there is no greater honour than to represent my roots, make my parents proud as well."I love the culture, and one big thing for me was how open everyone here is with Christianity and religion, because I felt that would allow me to come into the team, faith-based, and express myself."As Madugu searches for a heavenly blend of youth and experience, Omewa describes the stellar names she now trains alongside as "golden", as opposed to older."Without them we wouldn't be here today."With them coming into the team, teaching us how to do it, we learn from those people."Fellow striker Oshoala, who is chasing her fifth Wafcon title, is one of those Omewa is thankful to."She's a really remarkable person. She's a person who you can talk to, share experiences with and she tells you things she has gone through."I think she's a really good mentor."Nigeria do not have all of their stars available, with centre-back Ashleigh Plumptre, a central figure in last year's Wafcon campaign, out with a foot injury. The squad has also been unsettled after falling victim to thefts after landing in Morocco, with forward Esther Okoronkwo, player of the match in last year's final, reportedly losing hundreds of dollars. On Monday, the Nigeria Football Federation put out a statement condemning racist abuse it says Okoronkwo has suffered on social media since news of the theft first appeared. When it comes to prize money, the pot for this year's tournament has been doubled, with the winners picking up $2m (1.5m) - an increase indicative of the continued growth in African women's football. But despite the increasing level of competition, Nigeria remain the team to beat.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 21 Visualizações 0 Anterior
