Travis Hunter gets split work at WR and CB in Jaguars first day of camp
The Jacksonville Jaguars have been non-committal during OTAs, mandatory mini-camp and the offseason on how much offense and defense Travis Hunter, their first-round draft pick in 2025, will play this season. The first day of training camp didn't do much to clarify the situation, which is likely part of the Jags' overall plan.In other words, keep opposing teams guessing.Hunter, who was limited in OTAs and minicamp as the team brought him along slowly from the knee injury that cost him the final nine games of the 2025 season, went through his first team periods on Day 1 of training camp on July 29 at the Miller Electric Center. He did individual drills and ran plays with the team at both positions, switching jerseys as he bounced between the two sides. How many snaps did Travis Hunter take in team periods?Hunter played offense for four snaps in 11-on-11 periods and one in a 7-on-7 period, and was on defense for eight snaps in 11-on-11 and four on offense. He totaled 12 plays in 11-on-11 and three in 7-on-7 for 15 plays in all.How to buy Jaguars ticketsOn the first two plays he was on offense, the Jaguars called running plays to LeQuint Allen Jr. On the four plays he was on defense, the ball went to the other side of the field. He defended wide receiver Josh Cameron in a 7-on-7 drill, with the pass falling incomplete, but Hunter might have been called for pass interference in a real game.In his second 11-on-11 period, Hunter was finally targeted by quarterback Nick Mullens. He went high for a pass, came down with it, and the ball was jarred loose by rookie Jalen Huskey. Later in the period, on defense, he covered rookie tight end Tanner Koziol, forcing an incompletion by Mullens.Hunter split time in individual drills, working on period on offense and defense. This article originally appeared on Florida Times-Union: Travis Hunter gets split work at WR and CB in Jaguars first day of camp

Dan Campbell addresses Jahmyr Gibbs' contract as Lions star appears to hold in
There's nothing worse than a star NFL player opting to hold out of training camp over a contract dispute. However, a close second is seeing a player "hold in" while attending camp but not taking part in practice due to ongoing contract talks. While it hasn't been confirmed that Detroit Lions star running back Jahmyr Gibbs is taking the "hold in" route, it does appear that could be the case after ESPN's Adam Schefter reported both he and Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson sat out practice on Wednesday.Shortly after the news of Gibbs' absence at Lions practice surfaced, ESPN reporter Eric Woodyard asked head coach Dan Campbell if there was any update on the running back's contract extension."This will kind of continue. It'll come as it comes," Campbell said. "I think that's the best way to say it. This is both sides working through something and we'll take it as it comes, but that's where it is."Obviously, it's a less-than-ideal update for the Lions, but time will tell whether Gibbs indeed decides to hold in at training camp until a new deal is agreed to.This article originally appeared on For The Win: Dan Campbell addresses Jahmyr Gibbs' contract as Lions star appears to hold in

Bears training camp observations: Offense more organized on Day 1
The Chicago Bears hit the practice field at Halas Hall on Wednesday morning for the first practice of training camp under second-year head coach Ben Johnson. It was a closed practice, but the media have started to share observations. It was a light practice that lasted less than an hour and a half to kick things off as they ramp up before the pads come on later in camp. After last year's rough start for the offense, it sounds like they're much more organized to kick camp off, and it was the defense that had some hiccups. As far as attendance goes, it doesn't sound like there were any notable absences, outside of previously reported players on the NFI and PUP lists, including defensive end Montez Sweat, linebacker T.J. Edwards and cornerback Kyler Gordon. Here are some observations, from media members in attendance, following Wednesday's training camp practice:Light practice to open training camp#Bears first practice of training camp in the books. Michael Penix Jr. injury: QB says full medical clearance could still be four weeks away
FLOWERY BRANCH, GEORGIA - JULY 29: Michael Penix Jr. #9 of the Atlanta Falcons speaks to media during training camp at IBM Performance Field on July 29, 2026 in Flowery Branch, Georgia. (Photo by Todd Kirkland/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesNFL teams and NFL players are not famously open and transparent about injury timelines, but Michael Penix Jr. was an exception today. Per the teams 2025 starting quarterback, his recovery from his November ACL injury is progressing nicely, but it still could be a month until hes fully medically cleared. If all goes well, Penix noted, it could be a little sooner. Because the long end of that estimate would put us at August 29, that likely means the most hotly-anticipated battle of camp is all but over. So long as Tua Tagovailoas back tightness is indeed minor, hell be starting in Week 1. Michael Penix Jr. said doctors have said it could be four weeks until he's fully cleared medically, but it's not a firm timeline and could happen sooner depending on how his body responds. Doctors have told him he's ahead of where they expected him to be at this point. pic.twitter.com/UAeoCAEuIf Joe Patrick (@JoePatrick) July 29, 2026When Penix suffered his ACL injury and had surgery, insider Ian Rapoport initially reported that it would carry a nine month recovery at minimum. Since then, both the team and Penix have avoided putting concrete timelines on his recovery, but mid-August would be around nine months and Penix now seems unlikely to be cleared by then. Fans inserted their own timelines into the vacuum between Rapoports initial report and the months that have come. Some very optimistic souls believed he could be cleared for minicamp, but that time came and went. Others hoped we might see Penix cleared in time for the start of training camp, a more reasonable guess but still a bit of an optimistic one. On the first day of training camp, Penix was out there moving and throwing, but he still has not been fully medically cleared and cleared for full team work. The long and short of it is that Penix can do some work and give the coaching staff a measure of his ability, but cannot fully participate in training camp and almost certainly will not appear in preseason action. Hell get to build rapport with receivers because hes there and throwingand he chucked a long touchdown to Zachariah Branch Wednesdaybut obviously the work of running the offense and participating in scrimmages and the like is still a ways away. This is not the ideal outcome by any stretch of the imagination, but its also not one that should completely blindside us. Recovery from ACL surgery is slow and Penix is on his third ACL reconstruction, meaning the Falcons were never going to rush him back. The hope was that hed be way ahead of schedule and able to go head-to-head with Tua, and it was a battle I very much wanted to see given that Penix winning the job and excelling would be my preferred 2026 outcome. It is much better to have Penix giving a refreshingly honest look at his recovery, nonetheless, so we can adjust our expectations accordingly. If all goes well from here, Penix will be healthy enough to enter the season as the teams backup and will be able to step in if Tua is injured or falters. As Penix himself noted, his injury history means theres no sense in pushing too hard, too fast to get back and risking the entire 2026 season. The most important outcome now is having both him and Tua ready to go for Week 1, lest the team enter a critical season with yet another full-blown quarterback crisis.

2026 NFL Comeback Player of Year Odds: Patrick Mahomes Early Favorite
In 2024, San Francisco's Christian McCaffrey suffered from tendinitis in his Achilles and missed eight games due to that injury. He missed even more time battling a right knee issue and ultimately, sat out most of the year. But in 2025, he came back with a vengeance. Last season, CMC amassed a total of 2,126 yards including 1,202 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. As a result, the dual-threat running back earned the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award. Now, bettors are asking which player will take home the award at the end of the 2026 season. Here are the early odds at DraftKings Sportsbook as of July 29. This page may contain affiliate links to legal sports betting partners. If you sign up or place a wager, FOX Sports may be compensated. It was in that game, against the Los Angeles Chargers, that Mahomes tore his ACL and LCL. He underwent surgery the next day. Now, seven months later, he has been cleared to participate in the Chiefs training camp. Before being sidelined for the season, Mahomes had thrown for 3,587 yards and 22 touchdowns. Looming Absence: Micah Parsons the first non-QB on this oddsboard could end up winning Comeback Player of the Year. However, as of July 28, the timetable for his return is still uncertain. The Athletic's Packers beat reporter Matt Schneidman told ESPN's Pat McAfee that Parsons could miss the first month and a half of the 2026 NFL season as he recovers from a torn ACL that he suffered in Week 15 last year against the Broncos. A Giant Comeback: Cam Skattebo's rookie season took a turn for the worst when he suffered an open tibia fracture and a right ankle dislocation in 2025. He immediately underwent successful surgery but missed the rest of the year. In eight games last season, he had 617 total yards, including 410 rushing. New York selected him in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL draft.

Puka Nacua's rating in 'Madden 27' revealed: WR just missed 99 Club
There are six members of the 99 Club in Madden NFL 27 this year, two of them being Los Angeles Rams stars: Matthew Stafford and Myles Garrett. The Rams nearly had a third in the club, too.On Wednesday, EA Sports revealed the ratings of the top 10 wide receivers in Madden 27, and at No. 3 was Puka Nacua. His overall rating is 98, just 1 shy of a perfect 99 like his two teammates.Davante Adams didnt make the top 10, coming in with a rating of 91 or below; his official rating has yet to be revealed. JaMarr Chase and Jaxon Smith-Njigba are the two highest-rated receivers in the game, both earning 99 overall marks. The Top 10 WRs and RBs in #Madden27 are in. Does Jahmyr Gibbs join the 99 Club this season? pic.twitter.com/wMdpxV9a2Y Madden NFL 27 (@EAMaddenNFL) July 29, 2026No one would've had an issue with Nacua being in the 99 Club, and Trey McBride was surprised the Rams receiver wasn't given a 99 overall rating after seeing the catches and plays he made last year.EA updates ratings throughout the year so if Nacua goes off early in the season, it's possible (perhaps even probable) that he'll join the 99 Club at some point during the 2026 campaign. This article originally appeared on Rams Wire: Puka Nacua's rating in 'Madden 27' revealed: WR just missed 99 Club

Florida's quarterback battle one of the most intriguing in the country
With only four weeks away from the start of the 2026 college football season, there are still a few teams to name a starting quarterback. Among teams still needing to name a starting quarterback is the Florida Gators, who need to replace DJ Lagway following his departure to Baylor.Fall camp is starting soon, and after that will be the first week of games. Quarterbacks will only have a couple of weeks to improve their chances of starting, especially those who have limited tape out. That being said, let's take a look at Florida's quarterback battle heading into the season. At SEC media days, coach Jon Sumrall discussed the battle for the starting quarterback position, stating that while the program does not have a Heisman Trophy candidate, it does have quarterbacks in the room with good enough talent with both their arms and legs. They both are adequate runners. Neither one of them are elite runners. Neither one of them are slugs either. Both have good arms, both have good releases. Both can make all the throws. So there's enough there for us to win with."Tramell Jones was a true freshman in 2025 and backed up Lagway for essentially the entirety of last season. He did, however, see field time in a garbage-time win against Long Island, passing for 131 yards with two touchdowns.Jones' competition, the presumptive favorite for the job, Aaron Philo, backed up Haynes King at Georgia Tech the past two seasons and will also be joined by his offensive coordinator from Georgia Tech, Buster Faulkner. In the limited time he has seen on the field in place of King, Philo has thrown for 938 yards with two touchdowns to three interceptions during his career.Though Philo may have the slight advantage at this point, the position battle should just be heating up as fall camp approaches.Follow us @GatorsWire on X, formerly known as Twitter, as well as Bluesky, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Florida Gators news, notes and opinions. This article originally appeared on Gators Wire: Florida's quarterback battle one of the most intriguing in the country

Bengals' Shemar Stewart carted off after apparent injury at camp
Cincinnati Bengals edge rusher Shemar Stewart needed a cart to leave the field during the teams first training camp practice after suffering an apparent injury.According to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic, Stewart suffered what appeared to be a knee injury before he left the field on a cart with trainers.Stewart, the Bengals' first-round pick in 2025, had enjoyed a normal buildup to his second season before this point. That, after the post-draft contract standoff with the team and multiple nagging injuries never let him find his footing as a rookie. The Bengals spent big on defensive end this offseason to insulate a struggling spot. With Trey Hendrickson and Joseph Ossai gone, the front office signed Boye Mafe in free agency and drafted Cashius Howell, pairing them with first-round products Stewart and Myles Murphy. Stewart, thanks to his athleticism and ability to play multiple spots, is a key part of the plan for Al Golden's defense. In the past, cart rides at camp have been a precaution even for cramps, so it remains to be seen how severe Stewart's apparent setback is.During first 11 on 11 session, Shemar Stewart, the #Bengals 2025 first-round pick, goes down and hobbles off. Was favoring his left knee. He went down behind the drill, worked on and eventually tried to put pressure on it and couldnt. He was just carted off. pic.twitter.com/Cl0J3INwd5 Paul Dehner Jr. (@pauldehnerjr) July 29, 2026This article originally appeared on Bengals Wire: Bengals' Shemar Stewart carted off after apparent injury at camp
