Florida's quarterback battle one of the most intriguing in the country
With only four weeks away from the start of the 2026 college football season, there are still a few teams to name a starting quarterback. Among teams still needing to name a starting quarterback is the Florida Gators, who need to replace DJ Lagway following his departure to Baylor.Fall camp is starting soon, and after that will be the first week of games. Quarterbacks will only have a couple of weeks to improve their chances of starting, especially those who have limited tape out. That being said, let's take a look at Florida's quarterback battle heading into the season. At SEC media days, coach Jon Sumrall discussed the battle for the starting quarterback position, stating that while the program does not have a Heisman Trophy candidate, it does have quarterbacks in the room with good enough talent with both their arms and legs. They both are adequate runners. Neither one of them are elite runners. Neither one of them are slugs either. Both have good arms, both have good releases. Both can make all the throws. So there's enough there for us to win with."Tramell Jones was a true freshman in 2025 and backed up Lagway for essentially the entirety of last season. He did, however, see field time in a garbage-time win against Long Island, passing for 131 yards with two touchdowns.Jones' competition, the presumptive favorite for the job, Aaron Philo, backed up Haynes King at Georgia Tech the past two seasons and will also be joined by his offensive coordinator from Georgia Tech, Buster Faulkner. In the limited time he has seen on the field in place of King, Philo has thrown for 938 yards with two touchdowns to three interceptions during his career.Though Philo may have the slight advantage at this point, the position battle should just be heating up as fall camp approaches.Follow us @GatorsWire on X, formerly known as Twitter, as well as Bluesky, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Florida Gators news, notes and opinions. This article originally appeared on Gators Wire: Florida's quarterback battle one of the most intriguing in the country

Bengals' Shemar Stewart carted off after apparent injury at camp
Cincinnati Bengals edge rusher Shemar Stewart needed a cart to leave the field during the teams first training camp practice after suffering an apparent injury.According to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic, Stewart suffered what appeared to be a knee injury before he left the field on a cart with trainers.Stewart, the Bengals' first-round pick in 2025, had enjoyed a normal buildup to his second season before this point. That, after the post-draft contract standoff with the team and multiple nagging injuries never let him find his footing as a rookie. The Bengals spent big on defensive end this offseason to insulate a struggling spot. With Trey Hendrickson and Joseph Ossai gone, the front office signed Boye Mafe in free agency and drafted Cashius Howell, pairing them with first-round products Stewart and Myles Murphy. Stewart, thanks to his athleticism and ability to play multiple spots, is a key part of the plan for Al Golden's defense. In the past, cart rides at camp have been a precaution even for cramps, so it remains to be seen how severe Stewart's apparent setback is.During first 11 on 11 session, Shemar Stewart, the #Bengals 2025 first-round pick, goes down and hobbles off. Was favoring his left knee. He went down behind the drill, worked on and eventually tried to put pressure on it and couldnt. He was just carted off. pic.twitter.com/Cl0J3INwd5 Paul Dehner Jr. (@pauldehnerjr) July 29, 2026This article originally appeared on Bengals Wire: Bengals' Shemar Stewart carted off after apparent injury at camp

On 20th birthday, Brewers Chorizo still struggles to cross finish line
Withthe MLB trade deadline approaching, Milwaukee Brewers fans are wondering who may join the Crew, but on this day in 2006 the Brewers made perhaps their most-important free-agent signing of the past 20 years. Not Mike Cameron or Lorenzo Cain the Chorizo. On July 29, 2006, the Brewers added a new runner to the famous in-game sausage race in honor of the team's Latino fanbase. It wasCervecerosday at American Family Field then Miller Park back then.Cerveceros is Spanish for beer-maker, aka a Brewer. Chorizo finished third in that first race, which would be its only one of the 2006 season. After its debut, Chorizo was sent down to the minors for seasoning, according to the Brewers, and returned on opening day 2007."This really began as a grassroots email and letter-writing campaign," current Brewers president of business operations, Rich Schlesinger, said at the time. "At first, it was a few letters a week, and, to use a food analogy, it mushroomed to something much larger. We started taking it seriously."This season, Chorizo is at the bottom of the pack in competition on the field, however, and is tied with Hot Dog for last place at seven wins, which is a better showing than previous years. Chorizo has been in last place overall for the past three seasons and has been near the bottom for the other two of the past five. Its worst performance came in 2021, when it logged only eight wins for the entire season so if it gets one more win this season, it will at least tie that. In 2022, Chorizo narrowly avoided last place by winning 14 races, a four-win lead over Hot Dog. Chorizos five-year doldrums arent necessarily the fault of the racer inside, however, as part of the issue lies in the way the costume is built: namely the large foam sombrero on top. While other racers can lean their costumes forward to gain speed,Chorizo can't because it most likely would topple over, in part because of the heavier sombrero. And removing the sombrero is not an option. For one, it would require a costly remake of the costume and, more importantly, its what makes Chorizo who it is.So, the next time you watch the sausage race and make fun of Chorizo for falling woefully behind, remember that it probably cant help it. Happy birthday Chorizo, here's hoping you can catch a break one of these days. This article originally appeared on Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: On 20th birthday, Brewers Chorizo still struggles to cross finish line

Brian Gutekunst: Micah Parsons "doing great right now," but still unlikely to be ready Week 1
Packers edge rusher Micah Parsons is making good progress in his rehab from a torn ACL, but it continues to sound like he will not be ready to play at the start of the season. While General Manager Brian Gutekunst told reporters that hes open to the possibility of Parsons coming off the active/physically unable to perform list before the end of training camp, it doesnt seem like thats going to happen.Yeah, Id like to have enough flexibility to leave the door open. But that would be unlikely, just from a timing perspective, Gutekunst said in his Wednesday press conference. Weve invested a lot in him, so we want to make sure hes ready to go before we even think about putting him out there. That being said, Parsons has made plenty of progress since suffering the injury in December.I may have mentioned it before, but hes a little bit of a genetic freak, so things come pretty easy to him, Gutekunst said. Again, hes still, obviously, got a long ways to go. These are major injuries, so as you go through these things and how hard they have to work to get back, theres always going to be little setbacks here and there. But hes doing great right now.Parsons registered 12.5 sacks with 12 tackles for loss and 27 quarterback hits in 14 games last season, his first with the Packers.
