SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFractured finger rules out Masood for the 2nd cricket test against West IndiesISLAMABAD (AP) Pakistan in-form batter Shan Masood was ruled out of the second cricket test against the West Indies due to a fractured left index finger.Masood was the only bright batting spot in Pakistans 90-run defeat in the first test at Trinidad when the left-hander scored a century in the first innings.Following a scan and clinical assessment, Shan is currently undergoing treatment from the Pakistan team medical panel, the Pakistan Cricket Board said in a statement late Thursday.Masood was relieved of the captaincy before the two-test series against the West Indies after Pakistan lost 12 of the 16 test matches under his leadership. Babar Azam returned as skipper, but could not prevent Pakistans eighth successive away loss in test matches at Trinidad as the team continued to struggle in red-ball cricket.Fast bowler Jayden Seales short ball struck Masood on the index finger in the first innings before the left-hander went on to score his seventh test hundred.Masood did not take the field in the West Indies second innings, but came out to bat at No. 8 after Pakistan was reduced to 53-6 while chasing 211. He visibly looked in pain before getting caught at point for three and Pakistan chase got folded for 120 runs.Pakistan has three batters Abdullah Shafique, Saud Shakeel and uncapped Awais Zafar to fill in Masoods place for the second test, starting from Sunday.Pakistan is scheduled to tour England for three test matches and the PCB said Masood will stay with the team. However, he is doubtful for the first test, starting at Leeds from Aug. 19 as the PCB said his participation will depend on his recovery and clinical progress.___AP cricket: https://apnews.com/hub/cricket0 Reacties 0 aandelen 103 Views 0 voorbeeld

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMatchday Musings: Minutes In The Legs For The Lads In New JerseyHARRISON, NJ - JULY 30: Sebastiaan Bornauw #33 of Leeds United FC battles Brian Brobbey #9 of Sunderland AFC during the game on July 30, 2026 at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey. (Photo by Rich Graessle/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) | Icon Sportswire via Getty ImagesIts a clich to say the most important thing about pre-season matches is to get minutes in the legs, but clichs exist for a reason.Sunderland fell 1-0 to Leeds United Thursday night (or Friday morning if you were watching in Sunderland) in Harrison, New Jersey, and other than the lone and very ugly goal the most interesting thing that happened in the match was who got minutes for the Black Cats.World Cup returnees Brian Brobbey, Nilson Angulo, Noah Sadiki, Habib Diarra and Simon Adingra all made their pre-season debuts in the loss, but Robin Roefs didnt play.Sunderland started the match with an almost identical lineup to the 4-2 loss to Liverpool Ellborg in goal, Nordi Mukiele, Dan Ballard, Luke ONien and Reinildo across the back, Alan Browne, Chris Rigg and Enzo Le Fe in the midfield and Trai Hume and Romaine Mundle on the wings. The lone change was up top, where Brian Brobbey made his return in place of an absent Wilson Isidor. Your Sunderland XI in New Jersey.Watch live on https://t.co/i3LbsUZUu8 Sunderland AFC (@SunderlandAFC) July 30, 2026Leeds, on the other hand, made seven changes from their 3-2 loss to Wrexham on Saturday and among the changes was the debut of Tarik Muharemovic, the Bosnian defender who was reportedly a Sunderland target but signed with Leeds for 37 million?Swedish World Cup starter Gabriel Gudmundsson also made his pre-season debut, whilst free transfer Harry Wilson and Japanese World Cup veteran Ao Tanaka made their first starts. It was Tanaka that set up the Leeds goal.Le Fe hadnt put a foot wrong throughout the first two matches but Tanaka deflected an attempted flick into the path of Lucas Nmecha, who passed the ball in off the post from about thirty five yards as Ellborg twisted and fell trying to get back from outside the penalty area. | GOAL: LUKAS NMECHA OPENS THE SCORING FOR LEEDS UNITED! WHAT A GOAL!Leeds 1-0 Sunderland. pic.twitter.com/d8zqHqnEQp TheGoalsZone (@TheGoalsZone) July 30, 2026Ellborg barely had anything else to do in the half, making his only save in the twenty sixth minute, yet drew the ire of the fans inside Sports Illustrated Stadium several times for standing on the ball well outside the area while Leeds refused to pressure him.The most dangerous span of the game for the Black Cats came inside six minutes. In the eighteenth minute, after one of his long stretches on the ball, Ellborg found Le Fe on the right, who leapt to volley it into Brobbeys path. Brobbey looked to have a chance to attack, but dropped it back for Le Fe, who wasnt there. The rest of the good looks came from the left side Mundle got into a space, but pulled a pass back to the spot Brobbey had vacated a moment earlier. Two minutes later, Mundle set up probably the best opportunity of the half, sliding a ball to Reinildo. The ball probably went over the endline, but play continued, and Reinildo found Brobbey in the middle. The Dutchman, though, whiffed badly from six yards and then Le Fe did as well with a chance from further out.Shortly afterwards, Brobbey and Mundle forced a turnover and Brobbey set up Hume inside the box. Hume one-touch dropped it back to an onrushing Mundle, but his shot wasnt close.Brobbey was replaced by Timur Tutierov after thirty six minutes, not long after an altercation with Leeds Joe Rodon.Sunderlands right side and Leeds left almost didnt exist in the attack. Wilson was essentially a non-entity, and Muharemovic, who was excellent, and Gudmundsson kept Mukiele, Hume and Rigg quiet the rare times the ball strayed to the right.Leo Hjelde and Nilson Angulo replaced Ballard and Mundle at halftime, while Noah Sadiki, Habib Diarra, Simon Adingra, Archie Lightfoot, Jenson Jones, Tom Proctor and Jenson Seelt came on after an hour to replace the rest of the outfield starters.Timur Tutierov also continued his impressive pre-season.Playing as a striker for the first time this summer, he twice got on the end of crosses, though his headers were weak. Late in the match, after moving to the wing when Trey Ogunsuyi replaced Angulo, he combined on a give-and-go with Adingra and forced a save from eighteen yards.Adingra was also bright playing on the right, though he often meandered into the middle of the formation and twice had shots blocked. The second-choice back line of Jones, Seelt, Hjelde and Lightfoot largely avoided the lapses that occurred against Liverpool Diarra and Sadikis protection certainly helped but Ellborg was called on to make four saves in four minutes. Daniel James had the best chance of the half at seventy seven minutes, but Ellborg stood tall and blocked Dan James blast off his chest and out for a corner.Sunderland will complete its US tour on Sunday at 5 p.m. against Wrexham in Chester, Pennsylvania.0 Reacties 0 aandelen 105 Views 0 voorbeeld

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFIFA launch disciplinary proceedings against Argentina over Falklands banner and assault in World Cup finalFIFA launch disciplinary proceedings against Argentina over Falklands banner and assault in World Cup finalFIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Argentina following a series of incidents that took place during the World Cup.According to the Daily Mail, the incidents include the display of a controversial Falklands banner after their semi-final victory over England and violent clashes that followed the final against Spain. The governing body confirmed that it is investigating several alleged breaches of its disciplinary rules. These include discriminatory chants and gestures, racist abuse, security and match protocol violations, supporters throwing objects, and the display of political messages by both players and fans during Argentinas World Cup campaign. The biggest point of controversy came after Argentina defeated England in the semi-finals.Several players, including Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez and Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cristian Romero, celebrated with a banner reading Las Malvinas son Argentinas. The banner referred to Argentinas claim over the Falkland Islands, sparking criticism in the United Kingdom, where politicians called for FIFA to investigate the incident.FIFA regulations prohibit political messages at World Cup events, so the banner will be heavily scrutinised during the disciplinary case.Separate disciplinary proceedings have also been launched against Argentina defender Nahuel Molina, midfielder Leandro Paredes and assistant coach Roberto Ayala over their alleged actions during chaotic scenes after the World Cup final against Spain.Molina allegedly struck Spain captain Rodri during post-match celebrations, while Ayala is accused of punching Spanish midfielder Dani Olmo.Paredes has been charged with three counts of assault after allegedly grabbing Eric Garcia by the neck before forcing substitute Gavi to the ground with the assistance of Thiago Almada.Molina is facing two assault-related charges, while Ayala has been charged with one.Paredes, Molina, Ayala, Almada and Spain midfielder Gavi have also been charged with unsporting behaviour over the confrontation that erupted immediately after the final whistle.FIFA said the disciplinary action covers incidents from several Argentina matches throughout the tournament, not just the final. They added that all those facing charges have been given the opportunity to respond before any verdict is reached.0 Reacties 0 aandelen 97 Views 0 voorbeeld

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMClaudio Ranieri appointed Italy national team directorClaudio Ranieri appointed Italy national team directorClaudio Ranieri has outlined an ambitious plan for the future of Italian football after taking on the role of Italys new national team technical director. This comes after Italy surprisingly approved Roberto Mancinis return as head coach. The veteran coach believes Italys path back to the top of world football starts with developing better young players rather than focusing only on short-term success.Ranieris new role comes after a brief spell as AS Roma manager in 2024/25. He oversaw 36 games and led Roma to a fifth-placed finish in Serie A while averaging 2.03 points per match (PPM).The Giallorossi narrowly missed out on a place in the Champions League after finishing just one point behind fourth-placed Juventus. As technical director, Ranieri will now oversee the structure of Italys national teams and help shape the future of the game across all age groups. His main objective is to rebuild the connection between the national team and its supporters while creating a stronger foundation for future generations of players. One of his biggest priorities is changing how young footballers are coached.Ranieri believes Italian football has become too focused on tactics at an early age, while other countries are producing players with better technical skills and greater confidence on the ball.He wants youth coaches to place more importance on dribbling, creativity and individual ability, especially for children between the ages of 10 and 12.My goal is for the fans to fall in love with the Azzurri again and for children, like my 12-year-old grandson, to be able to see Italy in a World Cup, Ranieri said (via TyC Sports). We are very good at tactics, but the others dribble. We win in lower categories through tactical discipline, but we need to return to individual technique; children have to learn how to handle the ball.Ranieri also highlighted affordability as another important issue facing youth football. He warned that rising costs are making it harder for many children to join football academies, while others are choosing different forms of entertainment instead of playing the sport. We cant allow that to happen today, he added. Children are turning to other games, and we must reconnect them with football by trying to lower the prices of sports academies.0 Reacties 0 aandelen 82 Views 0 voorbeeld
