A lot can be answered by looking back at Monkens stops as a coach throughout both college and the pro levels. There is also a lot of data out there, including Monkens past passing rate, that gives us some indication of what the Browns will look like.On the other hand, at his introductory press conference, Monken gave what we considered a refreshing take on whether he is scheme-focused (as many say former HC Kevin Stefanski was) or fits his scheme around the talent he has on the roster:Well, thats a question I get asked all the time, like what system do you run? What is that? And the way Ill try to phrase it is to score any way possible. I dont care what it takes to score, its about scoring points. I would hate to put some sort ofany type of connotation as to what system that we are, other than playing to our players strengths. I think one of the things that our staff, including myself, have been able to do is take advantage of what a player can do and not what they cant do. Every player in the NFL is elite, and they all have a trait, at least one trait that allows them to, I dont want to say this allows them to function, play at a high level. You just got to find what that is and not try to put a square peg in a round hole, taking advantage of what they do. And I think thats what weve been able to do consistently.At other times during the offseason, Monken has given more of a we are who we are style answer to these types of questions.During Week 1 of Clevelands training camp, Monken was once again asked about scheme plans now that hes had time with the players. The Denver Broncos are bringing in veteran Sam Webb and parting ways with an injured rookie to make room for him. Denver officially designated undrafted cornerback Blake Cotton as waived/injured on Friday. He will revert to injured reserve after clearing waivers. However, after news broke on Thursday evening that the Broncosplanned to sign Webb, Cotton told the Denver Gazette's Chris Tomasson that Denver planned to waive him with an injury settlement. So he will presumably be released from IR with a settlement in the coming days. Cotton (6-2, 195 pounds) totaled 30 tackles and seven pass breakups in 13 games at Utah last fall. He told Tomasson that he suffered a hamstring injury on the first day of training camp acclimation. The Broncos have not ruled out the possibility of bringing Cotton back at some point down the road, according to Tomasson. Year one, year two, and now heading into year three, we hear that word floating and continue to hope for the best with these athletes and the injuries tied to them.One of the players that has unfortunately seen some time sidelined due to injury is Kam Williams. Last year, against the Texas Longhorns, Williams suffered a foot injury on a routine play. Since then, he has worked his tail off, recovering from immediate surgery to return within such a short window, and ultimately made that happen by returning to be with the 2025-26 squad as they went into the postseason. We recently learned from Mark Pope that Williams underwent a second surgery, which delayed things a little bit for the rising junior, heading into his second season in Lexington. Then on Thursday, Williams met with local media and opened up about his recent surgery. It was really a clean-up thing, said Williams. Obviously, I was preparing to come back for the summer, like in May or whatever, and started working out more and more. Then went up for another imaging process or whatever, and we just didnt like how it looked in a way. So we just decided that it was the best opportunity we needed to take advantage of, which was getting it cleaned up.Williams also added, It was kind of like a no-brainer for me at least because it gave me the best chance to have the best healing process.Many fans were understandably worried when pictures surfaced of him in a boot and on crutches recently. The words of Williams should calm some nerves as he seems to be right back on track after doing what everyone involved thought was best.Williams was asked if he will be around for the opener against Manhattan on November 3, and his response: For sure. Obviously, an ideal situation would have had Williams on the court, fully healthy months ago, but that isnt reality. CHICAGO -- For decades, Michigan football was synonymous with doing things the right way, having never been subject to any NCAA investigations or penalties. There was little in the way of coaches doing the wrong thing, but the changeover from Gary Moeller to Lloyd Carr showed that the Wolverines weren't fully impervious to that. But the past four years have seen black eye after black eye -- some deserved, some debatably so.From 'burgergate' to 'signgate' to Sherrone Moore's firing, it seems that cameras and the NCAA have been set up outside of Schembechler Hall for some time now. Thus, after Moore's dismissal for having an inappropriate relationship with his assistant, Paige Shiver, the program hired Kyle Whittingham from Utah, who's known for running a tight, clean ship.And Whittingham said in his Big Ten media days press conference that the team is ready to put the past in the past and go forth with a clean record."They're hungry and ready to get back into a season and get into some football again," Whittingham said."They've been through a lot the last four or five years, but hopefully we can put the drama to bed and just get back to being student-athletes and having a great college experience."Whittingham noted in the same press conference that he hopes that with the most recent calamity, Moore's indiscretions, football can again be the main focus in Ann Arbor. The players are eager to showcase their capability, and he doesn't want the shadows of the past to haunt the program any further. Instead, he wants both aspects of a player's life -- being both a student and an athlete -- to take center stage, once again."There has been a lot of drama, as I mentioned before," Whittingham said. "We hope that we've come to the end of that and we're ready to proceed just with the business of playing football and winning football games and graduating players and putting the emphasis on things that should have the emphasis."But there were some unfortunate things that happened.That's not my place to really speak out on it. That wasn't there.I was not involved.But I can tell you right now we've got a very hungry and willing group of players that have done nothing but have worked their tail off for the last seven months and are here to get the season started. And they've got very good leadership as well.And so I'm just excited to make the first thing first, which is graduating and winning football games."Later, at his podium session, he shared more about how a program -- and the media, and the overall narrative -- can shift from being known as dramatic or controversial. Given that all of the 'scandals' in Ann Arbor have been coach-driven, he thinks that it will be in the rearview sooner rather than later."I think it can change pretty quickly, especially when the drama is not player-driven," Whittingham said."The drama is not player-driven.The players are doing what they're supposed to do. They're doing the things that they were recruited to do.They're not going to work as soon as I say something.They're living their lives the right way and they're accountable. There's a lot of consternation about Michigan football quarterback Bryce Underwood this offseason, yet not every national media member is wringing his hands, wondering if his potential will ever become kinetic.On Friday morning on ESPN's 'Get Up,' college football analyst Jordan Rodgers -- himself a former NFL quarterback who played at Vanderbilt in college -- shared why he's excited about Underwood now that he's paired with head coach Kyle Whittingham and offensive coordinator Jason Beck. After all, they managed to turn Devon Dampier into a dynamic weapon, and if the coaching staff can do that with a former three-star, then what might they be able to do with the former No. 1 overall recruit in the country?"I mean, the ceiling is so incredibly high just because he is so physically gifted," Rodgers said."And when I hear Whittingham talk about Dampier at Utah, I love that because if you go back and study that tape, they ran him a lot.I mean, he had, I don't think only one game, maybe two games, where he had less than 10 rushing attempts. Bryce Underwood only had one game, yet the last game against Texas where he had more than 10."So using his athleticism as a weapon is going to allow him to not think so much, to play more free, to maximize his skill set.And I think in turn, he's going to be a more consistent passer as he develops in this offense.
