With only about 35 players in the program, first-year Scottsdale Saguaro football coach Butch Goncharoff told The Arizona Republic that he has decided to keep them all together on the varsity in 2026.There will be no freshman or junior varsity teams.Saguaro begins its first day of practice in helmets on Monday, Aug. 3."We've got a few more freshmen out," Goncharoff said. "They're good kids. They're inexperienced. Our sophomores are in our depth because of numbers. The general thought was, instead of putting those guys on a separate field and letting them go, that we get them around us. They practice with us. They learn how to play. They're coached by us, varsity coaches."We decided, after meeting with them and talking to them, we're going to keep one team. We're trying to do what's best. I've never done this before, but I've never been in this situation before."This is a long way from Washington state, where Goncharoff coached 11 state football championship teams.This is a big fall for Saguaro, which was once the destination school in the Valley for football. The Sabercats won 13 state championships from 2006-23. But after the 2023 6A state title season, about 30 players transferred out for myriad reasons, as Darius Kelly took over the program from Zak Hill.Goncharoff was part of Kelly's staff last season. But Kelly was let go after 1-9 and 3-7 seasons.Another 35 players or so have left during the time it took to bring Goncharoff on board to lead the program in April, as the Sabercats had an interim principal and the school was searching for a new athletic director. Assistant football coach Frank Ruben kept the athletic program together during that search.Goncharoff said only 13 players showed up for the first spring football practice. It has grown since then, but not enough to feel it would be safe to field a freshman or JV team.He hopes more players trickle in once the helmets go on. He said there are about 15 freshmen on the team now, but some of them have never played football. ATLANTA Former Ravens wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins is expected to join Georgia Techs offensive staff as the longtime NFL receiver explores the next stage of his football career. Hopkins visited the Yellow Jackets this week and is expected to accept a role with the program, according to Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer. His title and specific responsibilities were not immediately reported.The opportunity would reunite Hopkins with Georgia Tech offensive coordinator George Godsey, who has a longstanding relationship with the five-time Pro Bowl selection. Godsey worked with Hopkins as the Houston Texans quarterbacks coach in 2014 and offensive coordinator from 2015-16. (AP) As if two-way player Travis Hunter doesn't already have enough on his plate.The week before the Jacksonville Jaguars opened training camp, Hunter was photographed wearing a police vest posing with Sheriff T.K. Waters and members of the Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department. It had the look of a ride-along, though Hunter wasn't saying.I was just out there just having fun with Sheriff T.K., Hunter said Friday.Hunter, the Heisman Trophy winner out of Colorado whom the Jaguars made the No. 2 pick in last year's draft, has enough to keep him occupied in training camp. Hunter is returning from injury, his rookie year ending two months into the season when he tore knee ligaments during noncontact drills.In seven games, he played 324 snaps at receiver and 162 snaps at cornerback. The plan to use him on both sides of the ball has not changed, especially after the Jaguars shored up the core of their secondary by re-signing Montaric Buster Brown in March.Hunter has been wearing a teal jersey for offense in three days of camp, with a white bib and his No. 12 he can slip on when he plays in the secondary.How do we balance his reps here, knowing that were trying to ease him in, but he also at some point needs to get double the amount that a normal player gets, coach Liam Coen said. And so what does that ramp-up look like? Training and being able to put those months in not just on the grass but in the weight room just putting in extra work, it made me feel lighter on my feet when I finally touched the grass.He looked like he was flying on grass when he ran the 22.6 mph no pads, no one around him, not in a game but it was another indication all was well.I'm trying to hit 23 now, Hunter said. That's the next goal.The Jaguars could use the production considering how much they gave up in a trade to get the second pick in 2025 their No. 5 pick last year and No. 1 pick this year. They won nine of their last 10 games last year after Hunter was injured to win the AFC South.For his part, Hunter feels like last year never happened in terms of his health.I put nine months in, so it doesnt feel like Im coming off an injury, he said. "Just get the rust off right now. Ive been gone for nine months, not able to be out here with my teammates for nine months, so finally being able to hit the grass, knock the rust off and just continue to click with the quarterbacks and click with the defense.Defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile said Hunter is getting back into the flow, and the added muscle in his upper body is noticeable.You never want to see anybody get injured, but I think he really put his best foot forward in the weight room as he was recovering from a lower-body injury, Campanile said. USA Today's Bob Nightengale is reporting rival MLB clubs believe the Cubs have the "best shot" to land Hanock, but it would be very costly.Cubs might have 'best shot' to trade for Mariners' Emerson Hancock"Teams are salivating over the idea of acquiring Hancock, who's easily the most prized young starter on the market," Nightengale writes. "They believe that the Cubs could have the best shot at him if they include outfielder Seiya Suzuki and perhaps infielder Matt Shaw in a deal."Hancock is a great starting pitcher, posting a 3.26 ERA this season in 20 starts in a breakout year for the 27-year-old. In fact, its the reason that from now until the trade deadline at 6 p.m. ET Monday (or until a Skubal trade happens), there will continue to be nonstop rumors and speculation about where hell make his next start. And despite all the hyperbole about what a Skubal trade could mean in the grand scheme of baseball, whats not hyperbolic is his monumental impact for prospective clubs.This caliber of starter hasnt been moved at the trade deadline since Hall of Famer CC Sabathia was traded from Cleveland to the Milwaukee Brewers in 2008. Its just not often that back-to-back Cy Young Award winners are available, but when one is, it could mean the difference between a team merely reaching the postseason and believing it can win the World Series.Looking at the landscape of the league, a Skubal trade could shift the balance of power in an entire league, especially given that the teams interested in the Tigers ace are already some of the best in the sport.For a team such as the Milwaukee Brewers, a trade for Skubal would show the rest of the National League that theyre not messing around in 2026. After getting swept by the Dodgers in the 2025 NLCS, Milwaukee would be declaring its intention to return as a challenger to L.A.The Brewers have shown in recent years that they can win in the regular season. But adding Skubal to a rotation that already features NL Cy Young Award front-runner Jacob Misiorowski, breakout arm Kyle Harrison and rookie right-hander Logan Henderson would take them from a solid postseason rotation to one that can beat any offense in the sport. Not to mention, they have the type of farm system that makes acquiring a Skubal a real possibility.The Tampa Bay Rays are in a similar position in the American League, as legitimate contenders with a deep farm system. Having been the best team in the AL for the majority of this season, the Rays adding Skubal would set them apart even more in an American League that looks to be theirs for the taking.Teams in win-now mode such as the Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies also have something significant to gain by adding Skubal to their roster. For these three, not only would adding Skubal make their team even better, but it would also prevent the other challengers in the league from acquiring that type of talent.Then theres the team that many opposing teams and baseball fans fear is inevitable in the Skubal conversation: the Los Angeles Dodgers.The Dodgers are always lurking in the shadows, waiting to make their next monster move, and this time is no exception. You could make an All-Star team made up of just players the Dodgers currently have on the injured list. Thats how stacked their roster has become over the past several years.And like it or not, the Dodgers are arguably the strongest trade partner of any team looking at the two-time Cy Young Award winner.
