Guest ton leads Derbyshire to win over Glamorgan
Brooke Guest started his career at Lancashire [Getty Images]Metro Bank One-Day Cup, ReptonDerbyshire 315-5 (50 overs): Guest 108*, Jewell 84; Douthwaite 3-66Glamorgan 271 (47.3 overs): Horton 81, Ul Hassan 61; Potts 4-39 Derbyshire won by 44 runsScorecard; TableAn aggressive century from wicketkeeper Brooke Guest led Derbyshire to a 44-run victory over Glamorgan. It was the hosts' first win of their One-Day Cup campaign while a youthful Glamorgan suffered their fourth straight defeat after an opening victory.Guest hammered 108 not out off just 82 balls to register his maiden limited-overs hundred and Australian Caleb Jewell hit 84 in Derbyshire's 315-5.Dan Douthwaite, with three for 66, was the most successful of a persevering attack. Zain Ul Hassan's 61 saw Glamorgan make a competitive start but they fell away in mid-innings despite a fighting knock of 81 from Alex Horton. The visitors finished on 271 as Nick Potts took four late wickets.Notifications, social media and more with BBC SportDerbyshire recalled Jewell for Yousaf Bin Naeem while Glamorgan brought back 17-year-old Tom Edwards for Connor O'Riordan. The Welsh county chose to bowl on the picturesque school ground and, with a short boundary and well-manicured outfield, the boundaries were soon flowing.Martin Andersson fell lbw for 13 and Harry Came was bowled for a rapid 31, both falling to Douthwaite. The hosts reached 62-2 in the powerplay with Jewell and Wayne Madsen keeping up a similar run-rate in a stand of 62 before Madsen (39) mistimed a pull off Edwards to mid-wicket.Jewell reached his 50 in 64 balls while Guest lofted a trio of sixes into the crowd on the bank at mid-wicket as the pair added 117 in the middle of the innings, a record fourth-wicket stand in List A cricket against Glamorgan. The visitors' bowling attack, without six leading options through Hundred calls, injuries and resting, had to settle for containment until Jewell lobbed Ul Hassan to cover. But Guest made sure of a powerful finish, ending with five sixes and five fours as Derbyshire matched exactly their total in last year's fixture at the ground. Glamorgan faltered early as Eddie Byrom (10) guided Ben Aitchison to a leaping Anuj Dal at backward point and Callum Nicholls went leg-before to the next ball. But Ul Hassan got going for his second half-century in two games since paternity leave, building a platform in a stand of 59 with Will Smale. They could not accelerate further as Smale (20) was let down by his favourite ramp shot, with the economical Anuj Dal striking the stumps, and Ul Hassan was caught at point trying to reverse-sweep spinner Jack Morley.Despite the inexperience of the Welsh line-up, the sixth-wicket pair of teenager Hope-Bell and Horton both hit centuries in the victory over Sussex. But their stand of 65 was not enough to change the game before Hope-Bell holed out to long-on off Potts after a promising knock of 48. Horton's half-century came up off only 41 balls but Douthwaite, capable of winning a game with powerful striking, was caught on the boundary off Andersson.Horton kept faint Glamorgan hopes alive as he smashed Potts for a huge straight six, his fourth maximum in a blistering 57-ball knock, before being caught behind next ball to end any doubts. Potts finished the innings off to record career-best figures.Next up, Derbyshire host Sussex at Derby on Sunday 2 August while Glamorgan continue their travels away to Hampshire on Wednesday, 5 August.Derbyshire's Brooke Guest said:"It was nice to get the runs, but after the first couple of games it's nice to get back on winning terms and hopefully pick up a bit of momentum."We know we've potentially got to win our last four games. We've done the first bit but we've got four more to go to try to get through, and a lot of hard work to do in this competition."We've spoken a lot about the batsmen coming in trying to raise the intensity, that was my role to get Caleb moving and get the partnership building. That was crucial in getting us to that total."It was a reasonably nice wicket, a bit sticky at times, but I just had a plan of how and where I wanted to score. It was one of those days where it comes off for you." Glamorgan's Alex Horton told BBC Sport Wales:"It was a disappointing one to lose, as a group we thought we ought to have chased that. It was nice to get a few at the end but not close enough."My job at number seven is to adapt and try to do whatever the team needs so it was nice to come in and get close to the total."We're a team of youngsters, we're still learning our trade and there's a lot of promise coming through."We've a team of talented players and from game one we showed we're not relying on certain players to score the runs. The boys are trying to prove how good they are and a few of the youngsters have already done that."

From Pittsburgh's scariest defender to technique guru: James Harrison explains why 'thudding up' works
The Pittsburgh Steelers built their dynasty and won six Super Bowl rings along the way, thanks in large part to their punishing defenses. While physicality and toughness have always been the name of the game, some players stand out even among the most aggressive, and at the top of the list is James Harrison.Harrison made a name for himself in the NFL by bringing his intensely physical game to Pittsburgh. That's why many would be surprised to learn that one of the most dominant defenders in history supports new head coach Mike McCarthy ending live tackling at Steelers training camp. Speaking on his podcast, Deebo and Joe alongside co-host Joe Haden, Harrison offered a masterclass on defensive technique, debunking the myth that players must constantly hit the ground during practice to hone their tackling skills.Harrison drew a clear line between going "live" and practicing with technique in mind. What yall gotta understand is, you dont need to actually tackle somebody to the ground, Harrison explained. When youre live that means youre dropping somebody to the ground and were going full go. What we do a lot is thud up: hit, wrap, release.According to Harrison, "thudding up" isn't just a concession to prevent injuries during practice; it actually cultivates superior fundamentals compared to full-go tackling drills, which can often lead to reckless habits. By focusing on controlled contact, defenders are forced to rely on discipline and form rather than momentum or dive-bombing.I think thudding up actually gets you in a better position to be able to make more secure tackles because now you have to get in there, you have to bend down, you have to put your head exactly where it should be, Harrison noted. Its no longer let me get there and dive at it.By emphasizing proper head placement, pad level, and wrapping up before releasing, defenders build muscle memory that translates directly into game-day success. Harrisons insights serve as a compelling reminder that elite defense is built on technical precision, control, and sharp fundamentals, not just brute force. This article originally appeared on Steelers Wire: From Pittsburgh's scariest defender to technique guru: James Harrison explains why 'thudding up' works

Tua Tagovailoa: I feel great, limited practices are a precaution
Falcons quarterback Tua Tagovailoa spoke about the back issue that has limited him in practice this week for the first time on Friday. Tagovailoa said at a press conference that he started feeling "just some tightness" in his back sometime last week and that led to the decision for him to sit out Wednesday's opening practice of training camp. Tagovailoa has done limited practice work the last couple of days and said that the current plan is to continue taking things slow because of where they are in the calendar. "I think just right now, it's just a precaution thing early on in camp and then well work through that," Tagovailoa said. "I feel great right now. Like I said, it feels good to be out there with the guys, be able to throw, continue to hear the plays, get in the huddle with the guys. All of that.Tagovailoa said this is the first time he's experienced the back issue and that he's done a lot of work in a pool with the training staff to relieve the tension he's been under. As of now, there's no timetable for when Tagovailoa will move up to a full practice workload but there wasn't much sign of concern from him or head coach Kevin Stefanski about how long it will be until that time arrives.

Packers Training Camp Recap: Dani Dennis-Sutton starting to find a role
ASHWAUBENON, WISCONSIN - JUNE 09: Kingsley Enagbare #55 and Dani Dennis-Sutton #51 of the Green Bay Packers participates in drills during the Green Bay Packers mandatory minicamp at Don Hutson Center on June 09, 2026 in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin. (Photo by John Fisher/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesTraining camp can be fickle. Earlier this week, the Green Bay Packers signed kicker Lenny Krieg. Just yesterday, receiver Brendan Rice missed his first practice with a hamstring injury. On Friday, both of those players were released to make room for the additions of receiver Kaden Prather and long snapper Cal Adomitis. The old adage is that you cant make the club in the tub, and thats truer the further you go down the depth chart. This is your reminder of how thin the margins are for the bottom 20-ish players on the Packers 91-man offseason roster to keep their jobs on a day-to-day basis.Beyond the transactions, heres what you missed on Friday if you werent able to attend todays training camp practice.InjuriesA big ovation for Tucker Kraft who took a lap around Nitschke before practice. pic.twitter.com/OE2MNTxd0a weston hodkiewicz (@WesHod) July 31, 2026TUCKER KRAFT IS BACK. The tight end isnt participating in team drills just yet, but he is off the physically unable to perform list and did do individual drills on Friday. For those keeping track at home, he did return to practice earlier than receiver Christian Watson did off his ACL tear. If edge rusher Micah Parsons follows the same timeline as Kraft, his return to practice would be somewhere in mid-September (which is now allowed for players on the PUP list due to an offseason rule change).Linebacker Edgerrin Coopers injury on Thursday was not serious and be practiced on Friday. In his pre-practice press conference, head coach Matt LaFleur stated that cornerback Kamal Hadden is close to returning to the field and that the hope is that tight end Luke Musgraves neck issue will work itself out, but its not gonna be in the short term. The Musgrave injury is likely why the Packers continue to work out tight ends, including three on Thursday. The only player not on Green Bays reserve lists who didnt practice today was offensive lineman Jager Burton, who is dealing with a short-term hamstring issue. If you need a refresher, this is what the Packers reserve lists look like currently:RB Chris Brooks (hamstring, NFI)TE Luke Musgrave (neck, PUP)OL Brant Banks (hamstring, PUP)DL Javon Hargrave (knee, PUP)DL Jordon Riley (Achilles, PUP)EDGE Micah Parsons (knee, PUP)CB Kamal Hadden (ankle, PUP)LS Matt Orzech (calf, PUP)OffenseStarting lineup:LoveJacobsWatson GoldenWhyle DabneyMorgan Monk Rhyan Benton KinnardSorrell Stackhouse Brooks LVNCoop ZaireNixon Bullard Valentine Williams X Andy Herman (@AndyHermanNFL) July 31, 2026The Packers continue to slow-play their players who are coming off injury, which on the starting offense includes Kraft, right tackle Zach Tom and left guard Aaron Banks. Consistently, Jacob Monk (left guard) and Darian Kinnard (right tackle) have been the starters in camp as injury replacements.Worth noting: It doesnt seem like the Jayden Reed slot-only role is changing. Christian Watson and Matthew Golden are getting priority looks over Reed when the team is running two-receiver sets with the starting offense.Matthew Golden just skied to catch a Jordan Love pass between Xavier McKinney and Zaire Franklin in middle of the field for 18 yards. Best catch of camp so far. Golden got ups. Ryan Wood (@ByRyanWood) July 31, 2026Speaking of Golden, he made a couple of splash plays in todays practice, including a jump ball in double coverage and a 50-plus-yard touchdown. Maybe theres a good reason why hes getting reps over Reed at outside receiver, despite Reeds production.Undrafted rookie receiver J. Michael Sturdivant, who was the highest-rated signing the Packers made in the UDFA period, is starting to generate some buzz, too. While hes had a couple of drops, the 63, 207-pounder with 4.40 speed is making some plays in camp. Ultimately, the sixth receiver job could come down to Skyy Moore, Sturdivant and Isaiah Neyor. Its going to be fun to watch that battle in the preseason.DefenseDont make too much about the defensive line rotation right now, because Devonte Wyatt and Javon Hargrave still arent participating in team drills. The starting job battle we can pay attention to, though, is outside cornerback, and its starting to be the same story every day. While Brandon Cisse got looks with the first-team starters when Kesiean Nixon was outside of the lineup, Carrington Valentine has consistently been a starter throughout camp. With Nixon back, it was Nixon and Valentine at outside cornerback with the 1s to open the day, the same as Thursday. It sure looks like the Packers cornerback pecking order right now (and this is obviously subject to change) is: Nixon, Valentine, Cisse and then Benjamin St-Juste. With that being said, St-Juste did make a nice play today, hauling in a pick-six from backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor.Fun DL with the 2s rn:Sorrell McClellan DDS Oliver Andy Herman (@AndyHermanNFL) July 31, 2026Barryn Sorrell is pretty consistently getting the start opposite of Lukas Van Ness on the edge right now, but the group is rotating heavily. One interesting trend is that rookie fourth-round pick Dani Dennis-Sutton is pretty consistently kicking into the interior line when the team is presumably working on obvious passing downs. Youd have to think that this role will eventually go to Parsons when hes healthy, but maybe thats where we see DDS biggest contribution until Parsons returns to the field. Two minute drill. 1:00 left. Tie game. 1 timeouts Ball on own 35. First and 10. 1. Reed from Love for a really nice gain along the sidelines and out of bounds. Ball on opposing 42. Great ball from 10. 2. Love to Golden over the middle. First down. Clock ticks. Opposing 28 Andy Herman (@AndyHermanNFL) July 31, 2026The first-team defense won the two-minute drill today, which usually ends practice, on the back of two Nixon pass breakups. Start the hype train now? For what its worth, practice actually ended on a competitive red zone period on Friday, where Christian Watson caught a three-yard slant for a touchdown against Valentine.Special TeamsNew #Packers long snapper Cal Adomitis warming up, providing some relief while Matt Orzech remains on PUP. Matt LaFleur said Trey Smacks first live field goals of camp wont come until Sunday. pic.twitter.com/GsBTCsSGUs Ryan Wood (@ByRyanWood) July 31, 2026No kicking today, if you were interested in that. Youll have to wait until Sunday, as the Packers players have a rest day tomorrow.
