SPORTS.YAHOO.COM5 games critical to the Oklahoma Sooners 2026 aspirationsThe Oklahoma Sooners made the College Football Playoff in 2025, navigating one of the more difficult schedules in the sport with a 10-2 regular season record and earning an opportunity to host a playoff game. In 2026, the Sooners will face one of the toughest schedules in college football once again. The Sooners have an experienced group, with a lot of returning production on both sides of the ball. A team that has been through the fire of Neyland Stadium and Bryant-Denny Stadium and won with their backs against the wall, with a 4-0 month of November to make the playoff. In order to make the playoff, the Sooners will have to overcome some tough road environments, beat teams that are projected to make the playoff, and navigate some high expectations. Brent Venables and the team will tell you that every game matters and holds equal importance, but some games carry a whole lot more weight. Here are five games that will be critical to the Oklahoma Sooners' playoff and national championship hopes in 2026. at Georgia BulldogsIt'll be the Oklahoma Sooners' first trip to Athens in the history of the program, facing a head coach who has only lost two games at home since 2017. The Georgia Bulldogs were voted to win the SEC in 2026 and have been one of the most consistent programs in college football over the last decade. It'll be tough sledding, but the Sooners proved they can win on the road in tough environments in 2025. Get more Georgia Bulldogs news, analysis, and opinions onUGAWire.Red River Showdown vs. Texas LonghornsThe Oklahoma Sooners are just 1-3 vs. Texas under Brent Venables. The offense has struggled amid quarterback injury and inexperience in three of those four years. Though the team is taking it as just another game, this is one that every Sooner fan has circled.Get more Texas Longhorns news, analysis, and opinions onLonghorns Wire.vs. Ole Miss RebelsThe Oklahoma Sooners are 0-2 against the Rebels over the last two seasons. But they'll get Ole Miss and new head coach Pete Golding at home again in 2026. And they'll have a healthier quarterback and a defense that will be better prepared to contain Trinidad Chambliss. Here's hoping the weather cooperates. Get more College Football news, analysis, and opinions on College Sports Wireat Florida GatorsThe Texas Longhorns missed the College Football Playoff because of a loss to a 4-8 Florida team. You can imagine Brent Venables will have that on his players' minds when they prepare for their trip to Gainesville in November.Get more Florida Gators news, analysis, and opinions onGatorsWire.vs. Texas A&M AggiesThe Texas A&M Aggies were a playoff team a year ago and bring back a ton of talent, including quarterback Marcel Reed. Reed is in his third year as a starter for the Aggies and has gotten better along the way. His dual-threat ability will provide a challenge to Brent Venables' defense. Get more Texas A&M Aggies news, analysis, and opinions onAggiesWireJust missed the cutat MichiganThe two sides are fairly even in returning production heading into 2026 but it being Week 2 with a new Michigan Wolverines coaching staff should give the Sooners an edge in the matchup. Bryce Underwood is a more experienced quarterback than the one who walked into Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium last year but Venables had a great game plan for their offense last year and you can imagine he'll be able to slow down the former five-star once again.at MissouriTaking a road trip to Columbia on the final weekend of the regular season, Oklahoma will have a chance to punch their ticket to the College Football Playoff with a win over the Missouri Tigers. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMEagles want offensive linemen playing fast and without hesitationPHILADELPHIA Sean Mannion wants the Philadelphia Eagles offensive linemen thinking less and attacking more.Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata have described the teams new offensive approach as friendly to the offensive line. Mannion explained that the description stems from a teaching philosophy centered on clarity and what the Eagles call assignment commitment. We want these guys to go up there, know exactly where to go and play fast, Mannion said.Mannion and offensive line coach Chris Kuper want to remove uncertainty before the snap. That means giving each blocker a clear assignment and establishing rules that continue to work when a defense changes its front, shifts personnel or applies pressure from an unexpected location. The goal is not to eliminate every difficult decision. NFL defenses are too varied for that. Philadelphia instead wants all five linemen responding to those situations through the same rules, preventing one player from making an adjustment that the blocker beside him does not anticipate. If the defense changes a look, at least we all know exactly where were going, Mannion said. That shared understanding should allow the Eagles to preserve the physical identity that has long defined their offense. Mailata, Johnson, Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens and Tyler Steen form a starting group built to displace defenders in the running game and protect Jalen Hurts. A scheme becomes friendly to offensive linemen when it allows those traits to take over. Hesitation can neutralize power and athleticism. Clear assignments let blockers fire off the ball, attack their aiming points and trust that the rest of the line is working within the same structure.Mannion did not suggest the approach reduces the demands placed on Philadelphias other positions. His explanation focused on ensuring the line can execute its responsibilities decisively. The Eagles are not trying to make blocking easy. They are trying to make every assignment clear enough that one of the NFLs most talented offensive lines can play at full speed. This article originally appeared on Eagles Wire: Eagles want offensive linemen playing fast and without hesitation0 Comments 0 Shares 74 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAt SummerSlam, Oba Femi gave WWE its clearest answer to its biggest questionWe heard the great man say it himself last night: "This is the future." That was the graceful encore from Brock Lesnar to cap off WWE SummerSlam Night 1, as the future Hall of Famer lifted the arm of Oba Femi the man who had just brutalized Lesnar in a Hell in a Cell match to signal the passing of the torch.Let's face it: Femi winning that match was a sure thing. What we didn't know, though, was that WWE would elevate the showdown to be Saturdays main event, bumping champion CM Punk and Cody Rhodes down a spot to do so. We also didn't know it would end with Lesnar embracing Femi, hailing him as the next great thing in professional wrestling. The emotional payoff was the perfect ending to the whole Lesnar-Femi trilogy that has been going on since WrestleMania. Though it also leaves an unspoken question: will Lesnar's prediction about "the future" now come true?In terms of Femi himself, it seems a safe bet. Every single move WWE has made this year regarding the 28-year-old rookie has confirmed just how much it sees in him. From the fact that his first ever main-roster match was against Rhodes then still the Undisputed WWE Champion to his dominant run in this year's Royal Rumble, it's been obvious the promotions leadership regard Femi as a generational talent.Brock Lesnar raises Oba Femi's hand after their SummerSlam match in Minneapolis.WWE via Getty ImagesWith Lesnar now vanquished, Femi's path should be obvious. "The Ruler" needs a couple of decent feuds to finish out the year names like Drew McIntyre and Seth Rollins spring to mind and keep him on the PLE cards, before he inevitably wins the Royal Rumble come January. That allows WWE to make Oba Femi the main face of WrestleMania 43 in Saudi Arabia, an event that is going to need all the good PR it can get.It should go without saying that Femi needs to win that belt in Riyadh. After the decision to defer his King of the Ring world title shot, there should be absolutely no hesitancy next time around. And it should feel like a massive deal when it happens. How about Femi crushing Roman Reigns, perhaps the most dominant WWE champion of the decade? But now we return back to that unspoken question: Femis future looks rosy enough, but without help, none of it matters. Does the company have what it takes to follow through and ensure Femi isn't the only marquee name on the poster come the turn of the decade? On that front, the jury is still out. We've all heard of the stats: the fact that no wrestler born in the 1990s or 2000s, for that matter has become a WWE world champion. Indeed, of the four men who compete in world title matches at SummerSlam this weekend, not one of them is under 40. The oldest, CM Punk, is just a smidgen younger than Brock Lesnar, a man who just openly referred to himself as "the past."It isn't like Rhodes, Reigns, Punk and Rollins are having any problems filling stadiums, but WWE hasn't exactly delivered when it comes to building up the names who will eventually take their places when the current world champions hang up their boots. If anything, the promotion has shown a frustrating reticence to create new champions. Look at the way creative cooled off on Bron Breakker this year. Once upon a time, it was practically obligatory to refer to him as a "future WrestleMania main-eventer." Since the first Raw of January, he's gone from being a world title contender to playing enforcer with Austin Theory and Logan Paul in the unluckiest faction in pro-wrestling.Dominik Mysterio is another one. Coming out of WrestleMania last year, Dirty Dom looked to be on the verge of becoming one of the biggest stars in the company an insane turnaround for a man who was once unfairly dismissed as a hopeless nepo-baby. Now he's doing most of his wrestling in AAA while being stuck doing comedy angles on "Raw."WWE has done a better job with Trick Williams, the 32-year-old former NXT champion who has been consistently pushed since getting the big call-up in January. Sure, Williams may have only won one of the secondary titles the U.S. title on "SmackDown" but hes gotten the chance to defend it at two massive stadium shows. Not everyone would get those opportunities, and Williams has grabbed them with both hands.Trick Williams (right) and Oba Femi are big parts of the future of WWE.WWE via Getty ImagesThose are the kinds of names that should be alongside Oba Femi when it comes to the world titles at WrestleMania 45 or 46. But we'll see whether WWE has the guts and determination to really make them into stars, because there isn't exactly much space in the world title picture right now. On "SmackDown," Punk already has at least four rivals (Rhodes, Gunther, Finn Balor and Sami Zayn) who have their eyes on his belt. Things are less crowded on "Raw," where Reigns will likely soon be on the lookout for new challengers. Thats a speedy path to relevancy (pardon the pun) for any up-and-comer.(Itd also help if concepts like Money in the Bank and King of the Ring were used again to create new stars, rather than just storyline opportunities for existing main-eventers. The decision to give McIntyre the MITB briefcase in 2024 only for him to lose it on the same night was a classic example of the latter. It added nothing to the Punk-McIntyre feud, and took an opportunity away from guys who could have done a lot more with it.)Still, for a few glorious few minutes last night, none of that mattered. With the Femi-Lesnar trilogy wrapped up, we were left to admire the prowess of the man who will surely close many more PLEs to come.Triple H knows it, Brock Lesnar knows it, Ari Emanuel knows it: Oba Femi will play a massive role in the future of WWE, likely well into the 2030s. The question between now and then, though, is who is going to be joining him.0 Comments 0 Shares 61 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhat Klint Kubiak must do to get most out of quarterback Kirk CousinsJun 9, 2026; Henderson, NV, USA; Las Vegas Raiders coach Klint Kubiak (left) and quarterback Kirk Cousins (8) during minicamp at Intermountain Health Performance Center. Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images | Kirby Lee-Imagn ImagesThe last time Klint Kubiak and Kirk Cousins were together back in 2019 in Minnesota, the coach was a up-and-coming 32-year-old offensive coordinator while the quarterback had turned 31 years old and entered his eighth year in the NFL. After spending three seasons with the Vikings and making other stops along the way, the duo are seen as the beacons of hope for the Silver & Black heading into 2026.Kubiak, now 39, is well into his first season as an NFL head coach helming the Las Vegas Raiders. And one of the biggest pieces of his upcoming offense is Cousins, a soon-to-be 38-year-old veteran (on August 19) thats been identified as the teams starting quarterback while prized No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft Fernando Mendoza is in watch, learn, and develop mode. I think in this league, its kind of one day at a time, Cousins said when asked what it means to be named the definitive starter after the Raiders training camp session this past Wednesday. Youre only as good as your last throw, your last practice. You try to every day go out and earn that opportunity and never take anything for granted. The reunions extends beyond the head coach and quarterback. Theres Andrew Janocko, who is one of Kubiaks most trusted lieutenants as current offensive coordinator in Las Vegas, and was assistant offensive line coach, wide receivers coach, and quarterbacks coach during the trio of seasons (2019-21) the three were together in Minnesota. And Rick Dennison, a veteran offensive line coach who was the offensive line boss and run game coordinator in Minny for the 2019 and 2020 seasons. By The NumbersKirk Cousins, Quarterback, 15th Year2025: 10 games (8 starts), 166 of 269 (61.7 completion percentage), 1,721 yards, 10 touchdowns, 5 interceptions, 13 sacks, 84.8 QB rating; 14 carries, 7 yards, 1 touchdownCareer: (2012-25) 174 games (167 starts), 3,934 of 5,899 (66.7 completion percentage), 44,700 yards, 298 touchdowns, 131 interceptions, 345 sacks, 96.8 QB rating; carries, 965 yards, 20 touchdowns"If you had a game tomorrow, Kirk Cousins is your best option at quarterback" @kirkmorrison with some insight into the Raiders starting QB decision pic.twitter.com/ORDoitaL1H NFL Network (@nflnetwork) July 29, 2026Its a keen example of the phrase: You dance with what brung ya, meaning: You should stay loyal to the people, plans, or strategies that got you to where you are. And that was encouraging to just see how much good football they have that theyre doing that maybe we werent doing four years ago or five years ago, Cousins said of the growth hes seen from the coaches he worked with previously. So, thats the way it works in this league; you just keep getting better, you keep learning new things, you keep evolving, adapting. But I came here because of who Klint and Andrew and Rick Dennison are as people, and that hasnt changed. And so, thats a big encouragement for me to know that Im with coaches that I really feel good about. Thats a big part of having success in this league. The engrained familiarity gives Kubiak a head start on his rendition of the Raiders this season and beyond and that leg-up should portend to a feel-good story. The weight of just how long the good times roll sits squarely on the capable shoulders of Kubiak and Cousins. So lets explore what the head coach and offensive play caller must do to get the most out of a veteran signal caller hes worked with before.Under Center & Play-Action CentricTo truly get the best out of Cousins, dialing up formations that put the heady and experienced quarterback right behind center Tyler Linderbaum to get the snap is the route Kubiak must take. Unlike how the collegiate and NFL game evolved into heavier usage of pistol and shotgun formations to give signal callers a better view to read modern defenses and escape pressure, Cousins is an old-school drop back quarterback who thrives under center due to his play-action ability and his vast pre-snap reading ability. Thats 14 seasons with the vast majority of his reps taking the direct snap under center which has made footwork, drops, and handoffs core muscle memories as Cousins heads into Year 15, and any coach that doesnt return to those roots is going to set themselves up for failure. Unlike being deployed in pistol and shotgun formations to help him recover from injuries, Cousins heads into the 2026 campaign healthy and ready to go. And the deep familiarity with operating under center allows the quarterback to return to his natural rhythm. One of Cousins core strengths is hiding the ball from the defense and taking the ball directly from Linderbaum then completely turning his back to the defense for a handoff fake effectively shrouds the play in mystery and freezes defenders. Even after Cousins took over for Penix, the Falcons remained out of most pistol/shotgun heavy teams in the league. A return to an under center offense could help Cousins out tremendously. https://t.co/wLtTj61syRpic.twitter.com/cfy5NyWxyN Ted Nguyen (@FB_FilmAnalysis) July 25, 2026Collective Game Planning & ExecutionWith that much equity, Cousins has no reason to be a yes man at this point in his career. And with him being so familiar with Kubiak, Cousins should have a strong voice in tailoring game plans around his strengths. Cousins excels at executing these kind of play-action fakes and is adept at spinning around, reading the field, and locating open windows downfield due to his processing of pre-snap coverages quickly. Of course, this key element goes nowhere without a consistent and established run game, so thats where running back Ashton Jeanty and Dennisons offensive line are integral. If the big uglies in the trenches are attune to the blocking scheme Dennison and Kubiak are installing and firing on all cylinders ditto for Jeanty and any other tailback given the ball the better for Cousins. Because a productive ground game opens up the play-action bootlegs and rollouts which will help Cousins attack the middle of the field in Kubiaks air attack. Were seeing signs of Kubiaks ability to marry the run and pass something he did quite well orchestrating the Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl-winning offense last season in Las Vegas. But dont take my word on it alone. I think the balance of the offense. As a quarterback, this is pretty basic, but the pass is sexy, Mendoza said after the teams Thursday minicamp practice. I believe that the outside zone scheme and schematics of the run that comes from the Shanahan tree is a great system, and it really complements off each other. It lets the offensive line and their talents shine. It lets the running backs and their talents shine. At the end of the day, the game is built on the run.But Cousins lack of mobility and age means off-script improvisation is dampened meaning the pocket protection from the offensive line must be on point. Brock To The FutureIts no secret tight end Brock Bowers looms large for Kubiaks offense in 2026 and beyond. A do-it-all-type who can run routes like a wide receiver but with the size of a tight end (6-foot-4 and 235 pounds) that can also block, the 23-year-old is lighting up training camp showcasing the talent thats made him an elite player at his position after one spectacular rookie season in 2024. Captain Kirk Brock #RaiderNationpic.twitter.com/5VyyQfL9kw Las Vegas Raiders (@Raiders) July 31, 2026If the practices thus far are any indication, Bowers is going to be heavily feature in Kubiaks offense and Cousins has the intelligence and arm to get the talented tight end the ball frequently. Able to run crisp routes while also leaving defenders in the dust (doesnt matter if its a linebacker or defensive back, good luck), Bowers ability to get open, make clutch grabs, and valuable yards after the catch are going to be spotlighted especially if theres even a hint of hesitation during play action. And thatll force more attention on Bowers which opens things up for other targets like speedy wide receiver Tre Tucker or physical possession wide out Jack Bech, and even Jeanty out of the backfield. Its going to be easier said than done, but if theres a coaching staff and quarterback that can make things work and turn around a moribund franchise like the Raiders, you can do far worse than Kubiak, Janocko, Dennison, and Cousins.0 Comments 0 Shares 69 Views 0 Reviews
