ATLANTA (AP) The Atlanta Braves moved to bolster their rotation only hours after placing right-hander Reynaldo Lpez on the 15-day injured list by acquiring right-hander Tyler Mahle from the San Francisco Giants on Sunday night.Mahle, 31, was 3-9 with a 5.14 ERA in 18 games with the Giants this season. The Braves sent right-hander Anthony Molina to the Giants. The Giants optioned Molina to Triple-A Sacramento.Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos said he was interested that Mahle was 2-1 with a 2.82 ERA in four starts in July. We actually talked with him as a free agent when he signed with the Rangers (before the 2024 season), Anthopoulos said in a conference call following the trade. Hes had good success in the past.For his 10-year career, Mahle is 42-55 with a 4.19 ERA.Molina, 24, had a 5.40 ERA in three games with Atlanta but spent most of the season with Triple-A Gwinnett. The Braves selected Molina off waivers from Colorado in December.Lpez was scratched before Saturday nights scheduled start against Washington after he experienced discomfort in his left knee. Some outlets, notably The Athletic and the aggregating site MLBTradeRumors.com, provide nonstop shopping for rumor seekers.The gambling aspect obviously has increased interest, along with social media and the addition of a third wild-card team in each league, which means more mediocre teams are still in contention at the deadline. As of Saturday, only a half-dozen teams were more than 4 1/2 games from a wild-card spot.Executives go under the cone of silence weeks before the deadline, leaving managers and players to answer speculative questions.Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell was in no mood to play along Saturday before the Cubs beat the New York Yankees 5-2 at Wrigley Field.Thats not for me, he said to one question. Im worried about the guys weve got here.Does he want to know everything President Jed Hoyer is doing?I get asked for some feedback occasionally, he said. The beauty of the trade deadline is it gives every fan a chance to be a general manager, conjuring up deals to improve their favorite team and proving to themselves why they should be the GM.One of the occupational hazards of being a sports reporter is hearing unsolicited trade proposals, and thats especially prevalent with both the Cubs and White Sox looking to buy at the same time, a rarity in Chicago. Everyone naturally had a deal to get Skubal and offers a return of prospects that would make Tigers President Scott Harris roll his eyes.Getting Skubal wouldve made Hoyer so popular he could have his own stage at Lollapalooza, but it was a long shot to believe the Cubs finally would reel in the big one. What will Hoyer do now? Im not sure even Hoyer knows until he actually does it. There are only a couple of game-changing players on the market, including Skubal. We might not know until deadline day Monday.Former Cubs general manager Jim Hendry jumped the market in 2003, acquiring Aramis Ramrez and Kenny Lofton from the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 22, more than a week before the deadline. It turned out to be a deal that eventually helped the Cubs win a division title. They advanced to the National League Championship Series before losing in Game 7. Its a long story.Most forget that Hendry also tried to acquire Rafael Palmeiro from the Texas Rangers at the 2003 deadline, but the slugger refused to waive his no-trade rights because of the allegedly paltry return. I didnt feel it would impact our club, Palmeiro said. After Hitchner and four others Tommy Morrison, Cole Hammer, Mason Anderson and Travis Trace tied at 21-under through 72 holes in blistering hot conditions in South Ogden, the fivesome headed out to the 18th tee in the sudden-death playoff. All five golfers hit the green with their approach shots, and the 6-foot-8 Morrison appeared to be in control because he was only about four feet away from the hole.After Hammer, Anderson and Trace missed their birdie putts, Hitchner rolled his in, then watched in disbelief as Morrison missed. His command disappeared almost immediately, and after plunking Andruw Monasterio with his 58th pitch, Dave Roberts had seen enough.Even more concerning than the line score was what the radar gun revealed.Sheehan averaged just 93mph on his fastball. For a pitcher whose margin for error has steadily shrunk throughout the year, diminished velocity only magnified the mistakes."I just don't think he was sharp today at all," Roberts said. "I think that there's a lot of balls, middle, middle. They took a lot of comfortable swings, aggressive swings, and you know there were some strikeouts and there's some swing misses. At the end of the day, it's about limiting runs, and you know you can't keep the ball in the ballpark. Then it's hard to win."That was the story. Boston didn't miss mistakes.Sheehan threw what amounted to batting practice in the decisive third inning, and the Red Sox treated it accordingly. Every elevated fastball over the plate, every missed location in the heart of the zone, every poorly executed pitch was punished."I think it was bad execution," Sheehan said. "Those are pitches that those guys had hit. I was in the scouting report and I just missed my spot."Execution has become the defining issue of Sheehan's season.A year ago, he looked like one of the organization's brightest young arms, posting elite underlying metrics that suggested far more than a back-end starter. This season, that pitcher has been almost unrecognizable.He's now 4-8 with a 5.29 ERA through 20 starts, and perhaps even more frustrating than the results is the inability to string quality outings together."I don't know," Sheehan admitted when asked why consistency has escaped him. "If I knew, I would fix it but I'm going to keep trying to fix it."That's an honest answer.It also isn't enough anymore.The Dodgers are no longer in a position where they can afford developmental starts every fifth day. Blake Snell is nearing a return, the postseason is approaching, and the rotation needs stability, not potential.Roberts stopped short of announcing a change."When you're pitching in big league games you've got to get guys out," Roberts said. "I don't know where we go from here."He may not know Sunday afternoon.The Dodgers almost certainly will by the end of the week.Whether it's a stint in Triple-A, the injured list if something physical is discovered, or another role entirely, it has become increasingly difficult to justify Sheehan remaining in the major league rotation. His struggles have gone beyond growing pains. The fastball isn't playing with the same life, the command continues to disappear for innings at a time, and every rough outing puts more pressure on an already taxed bullpen.Sunday wasn't solely about Sheehan.The Dodgers committed sloppy mistakes throughout the weekend, played uninspired baseball and were beaten by a Boston club that simply looked sharper from the first pitch Friday until the final out Sunday."I think just the totality of the series," Roberts said. "I think that if you look at it, unemotionally, they outplayed us. They were hungrier. You've got a lot of players over there that are under control. They're fighting for a higher seed in the postseason. The one who survived simply off doing everything asked of her, being the butt of all jokes and taking the brutality of everyone else so they could pass her up the hierarchy of the womens division.For so long, Green endured just to stay afloat.On Sunday, Aug. 2, she finally stood above everyone else.Green outlasted Charlotte Flair, Jade Cargill, Tiffany Stratton and Lash Legend to become the Interim WWE Womens Champion, finally capturing the top prize in wrestling in the crowning moment of her career and it couldnt have happened to a more deserving person.It really was a moment that didnt seem possible with the career shes had. Greens first appearance in the company was in 2014 as "Megan Miller," portraying a physical therapist that was having an affair with Daniel Bryan in a storyline. She made it through Tough Enough and had to grind in NXT and through SmackDown, but was eventually fired.She came back in a five-second appearance in the 2023 Royal Rumble that set the path her career was on. Green epitomized clown, on the receiving end of getting thrown in dumpsters, getting smashed in the face by cake or just about anything for a laugh. She admittedly loved it, but it felt wrong she was just being trotted around for everyones pleasure.Then, everyone learned who she really is. She became the darling of the Netflix Unreal documentary when it was clear how much she loved the business, and was willing to do anything for it at her expense. You couldn't help but want to root for her, and it paid off with the first reign of the Womens United States Champion.Still, that felt like it was it for her and WWE admitted it. Producer Michael Hayes said in the documentary that Green wasnt meant to be a top competitor; she was meant to help others get there, and nothing more.There was outrage over how they viewed such a hard worker. Even though Green had said plenty of times she loved that the company relies on me to elevate other women, you couldnt help but feel bad. If you did all that work, wouldnt you want it to be paid off and rewarded.Despite just hoping one day it could happen, it didnt feel possible until the opportunity was there at SummerSlam.I think just walking down the aisle will be a win for her. But hopefully, she pulls down that championship, WWE star and Greens husband Matt Cardona told USA TODAY Sports hours before the match. I saw her getting rejected by WWE multiple times. I saw her get fired by WWE. Now she's back in this spot. A spot that not only she deserves, but she has earned.Even when the chance was there, it didnt feel possible. With the crowd fully behind her, the first real shot to grab the title in the match was foiled when Michin and B-Fab came out to stop it, and that felt like it was it. A moment that felt wiped away.But Green was finally in the right place at the right time. Everyone else wiped themselves out, and there she was all alone.
