We recently began our preview of fall camp with five offensive players to know. Now, well do the same for the defensive side of the ball. DE Javion HilsonThe 6-foot-3, 245-pound edge rusher was an elite recruit out of Cocoa, Florida, only one year ago. He signed with Missouri, appearing in three games before choosing to redshirt. However, he entered the transfer portal and quickly became an in-demand player. Hilson chose the Hokies. He is one of several new edge rushers on this seasons roster. Hilson, Mylachi Williams and Samuel Okunlola have the best chance to make an impact this fall. Hilsons combination of size, length and speed gives him the highest upside of the group. He has the potential to make the same type of impact as Antwaun Powell-Ryland did a few years back. Thats not saying Hilson will reach 16 sacks or more, but the potential is there. He can easily be a double-digit sack guy this fall. DE Aycen StevensWe are double dipping at defensive end here. When head coach James Franklin was asked to name one player on each side of the ball who stood out this spring, he named Stevens. At 6-foot-5, 260 pounds, Stevens has excellent size. After redshirting his freshman season, hes appeared in all 25 games over the last two seasons. Now, its time for him to enter the starting lineup and never look back. Stevens will win at the point of attack with brute strength. It will be fun to watch him take the next step in his career. LB Noah ChambersThe 6-foot-1, 228-pound sophomore didnt play over the first few games last season. Once he entered the lineup on Sept. 27 against N.C. State, he never looked back. Chambers had six tackles and one sack in that surprise road win over the Wolfpack. He kept getting better throughout the remainder of the season and became a priority to retain. Now, the Hokies have their middle linebacker, and he still has plenty of room to grow. His former head coach, Brent Pry, is now his defensive coordinator and position coach. S Quintin ReddishReddish was one of Virginia Techs top recruits in 2024. He appeared in 12 games as a freshman and looked like a cornerstone player. Unfortunately, an injury cut his 2025 season to only three games played. Many believed Reddish was just biding his time until he could transfer. That was not the case. Franklin convinced Reddish to return. Hes healthy, and theres excitement about the player he can become. Reddish has an NFL future. CB Jaquez WhiteOne of Virginia Techs prized portal additions, White instantly became an immediate starter for the Hokies. He began his career at Division II Washburn. After two seasons there, he wanted to move up a level and landed at Troy. He earned All-Sun Belt Second Team honors, finishing with 67 tackles, including 3.5 for loss, three interceptions and one sack. White had plenty of options in January, but picked the Hokies. If his progression continues at the current rate, his next stop will be in the NFL. Hes one of the Hokies key players in 2026.

Tarik Skubal made his first appearance in the Los Angeles dugout Sunday. The Dodgers could have used him on the mound. They suffered an 8-4 defeat to the Boston to cap a three-game sweep at home at the hands of the red-hot Red Sox. While the winning end of the sweep means considerably more for the Red Sox than losing does to the Dodgers, it did put a slight damper over Dodger Stadium amid the jubilation of of the Skubal acquisition. And it signaled what could be the beginning of the end of Emmet Sheehan's time in the Dodgers' rotation.Skubal in is Sheehan out?Skubal was on hand to witness the loss in his first public appearance with the Dodgers since being traded from the Detroit Tigers on Saturday. He sported a Dodger blue hoodie and cap while sharing an embrace with his new manager, Dave Roberts, in the dugout. On a stacked rotation that now features a two-time Cy Young winner in Skubal at the top, Sheehan's time as a regular starter may be short. Even if he continues to pitch in the regular season, Sheehan now looks like an obvious cut for the projected postseason rotation. "When you're pitching in big league games you've got to get guys out," Roberts told reporters after the game of Sheehan's performance, per The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya. "I don't know where we go from here."The Dodgers are just fineThe sweep did little to hurt the Dodgers in the standings. They dropped to 69-43, a half game behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the best record in baseball. They hold a 10-game lead over the second-place Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West.The Dodgers are basically playing the rest of the regular season for home-field advantage in a hypothetical NLCS against the Brewers. Skubal's arrival improves those chances. He'll make his first start on Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs. Red Sox dreaming of an October rematchAs for the Red Sox, they're now 23-3 since July 23 and have turned a once-disastrous season into a 60-51 campaign and comfortable positioning as the No. 2 team in the AL wild-card standings. They just swept the best team in baseball on the road by scores of 9-4, 3-2 and 8-4.It's the type of effort that has Red Sox fans dreaming of a miracle rally from a 32-46 start that concludes with a rematch against the Dodgers in the World Series.

WESTFIELD, Ind. The Indianapolis Colts will hold their first padded practice of training camp Monday. That will mark another milestone in the returns from injury for quarterbacks Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson, and cornerback Sauce Gardner.Jones fractured his left fibula and then tore his right Achilles tendon in games last season. Richardson fractured his orbital bone (eye socket) in a pregame warmup. Here are four takeaways from Yahoo Sports Sunday training camp visit to Grand Park Sports Campus, where Colts camp is well underway 1) Daniel Jones rehab: Cleared doesnt necessarily mean 100 percentDoctors cleared Jones to fully participate in training camp practices. That doesnt mean hes back to 100 percent of his health and mobility before the December Achilles tear, an injury the NFL has historically viewed as requiring a nine-month recovery period (though some players have beat that timeline in recent years). Padded work will help clarify his progress more than last weeks shells work.The Colts believe Jones can run back the type of performance that sparked their 8-2 start last season. The key for Jones will be understanding not just how his Achilles is progressing but also how hes otherwise tweaking any mechanics or fundamentals. Its unlikely Jones Achilles tear wasnt related to compensation for his fractured fibula (they came on different legs), so recovering fully and wisely is crucial. Some teams are stricter on mandating specific layoff periods to reduce the risk of reinjury. Other teams are more willing to let a players rehabilitation progress dictate limitations.Jones posted a career-best 100.2 passer rating last season in Indy after six less efficient seasons with the New York Giants. And Colts teammates rave about his work ethic and leadership, from the meticulousness he approached rehab with to the focus hes since brought back to the field. The Colts believe in him enough that they awarded Jones a two-year, $88 million deal with $49 million guaranteed. His 2027 salary is not guaranteed. So Jones 2026 health and performance will dictate the future of the position.2) Anthony Richardson is still a ColtThe Colts drafted Richardson with the fourth overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft. Colts brass told me during training camp 2023 that they knew hed take them on a roller coaster, with the upside a home run hit but the downside rocky. The Colts have had more rocky moments than home runs in three years since, from Richardsons 50 percent completion rating to him checking out of a game to his eye socket fracture last year. And while hes healed some since then, and hes getting back into the swing of football, its worth keeping in mind how, well, necessary vision is to strong quarterbacking. NFL quarterbacks are asked to process and diagnose immense amounts of information in high speed, sorting through defensive disguises and guiding their own teammates on alignment. Orbital fractures could prompt double vision, blurred vision, light sensitivity or challenges with depth perception, according to the Central Valley Eye Medical Group that operates on orbital trauma. For a quarterback who already struggled with accuracy, any vision complications could further trouble his ability to produce efficiently.All of this complicates any deal for Richardson, who requested a trade this spring. They were excited about how he and fellow cornerback Charvarius Ward could torment quarterbacks. But Gardners calf strain and Wards concussion limited the duo to just one full game together. In training camp, theyre both back to full participation.Gardners length is already flashing in team periods, including a pass breakup out of a base coverage in red-zone work. God gave him those long arms, defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo told me, so he just got in there and knocked it down. Having a full training camp will allow Gardner to more chronologically adjust to a scheme that hinges more heavily on coverages than the Jets ran in Gardners days in New York. And Ward is continuing to impress coaches, too. Some cornerbacks, coaches like to say, adopt a leadership style that reflects the island theyre on in many plays. Ward has surprised and impressed with his more vocal style. Hes constantly communicating, Anarumo said. Primarily in teams situations, if its a third down or a key red zone like, Hey, lock into this or lock into that. You can see hes talking to individuals. Its been great.4) Second act for TE Tyler Warren, loadingThe Colts selected tight end Tyler Warren with the 14th overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft. The Penn State product translated immediately to the NFL as a blocker and as a productive pass-catcher who raced to 817 yards and four touchdowns his rookie year. The Colts credit part of that production to Warrens physical makeup: hes 6-foot-6 and 256 pounds, built tough with competitive endurance and a high learning capacity, tight ends coach Tom Manning told Yahoo Sports. But credit also head coach Shane Steichen for scheming Warren creatively. Given how drastically tight-end usage can range from team to team, NFL front offices care deeply about head coach buy-in when drafting a tight end in the first round. (Maybe this sounds obvious for first-round picks, but consider that players at positions like receiver and cornerback are more likely to be relevant every snap than tight ends sometimes are.) One example the Colts are proud of: Warrens 41-yard play against the Denver Broncos last September, when the Colts edged the eventual AFC championship-appearing Broncos 29-28. Warren initially came from the backfield before leaking through the offensive line. Because of the Colts high-end running game, the Broncos had reason to think he was headed out to lead block. Instead, Jones hit him 19 yards downfield and Warren barreled another 22 yards before he was tackled.Expect plenty more opportunity for Warren, whos already shown he can handle complicated responsibilities and now further climbs the pecking order with the departure of receiver Michael Pittman Jr. One area to watch Warren this year: late in the season. He started more strongly than he finished his rookie year, and it will be interesting to see how much that reflects him playing with a carousel of quarterbacks that included 44-year-old Philip Rivers. Already in training camp, he has flashed, including with a touchdown in seven-on-seven and a catch down the sideline. When Jones gets out of the pocket, he believes he can rely on Warren to be where the quarterback expects him and thus targets him generously accordingly.

Lots of moving parts to this offseason with a lot of teams. The Valkyries, instead of holding a comfortable lead, allowed the lowly Tempo to remain within arm's reach to open the second half. Toronto even flipped a two-point deficit into a five-point lead midway through the third quarter.The Tempo seemed poised to hold their lead, but Janelle Salan had other thoughts.A banked 15-footer. A 3-pointer. A timely baseline cut leading to a layup plus the foul. A sidestep 3 from the left wing.Salan scored 11 third-quarter points, more than half of Toronto's total output in the period. It was a perfect stretch for the sweet-shooting forward, who changed the course of the game and gave the Valkyries a lifeline in an eventual 96-79 win, snapping their two-game skid.The French forward, who leads Golden State's league-best bench unit, barely sat in the second half. She scored 24 points in a masterful performance, which, combined with strong nights from Veronica Burton and Gabby Williams, helped the Valkyries avoid an ugly loss.Toronto, which entered on a five-game losing streak, played without All-Star guard Marina Mabrey, who sat out due to a neck injury. Williams, Golden State's All-Star, returned to the lineup after missing Wednesday's game against the Phoenix Mercury due to reconditioning. The hot shooting extended into a 9-for-16 start, with reserves Salan, Tiffany Hayes and Kaila Charles contributing four of those makes.The Valkyries ended the period shooting 52.6% from 3-point range. But much of the good work they did- which resulted in as large as a 13-point advantage- was undone in the quarter's final two minutes when Toronto went on its run.But luckily for the Valkyries, Salan came alive. Her 24 points were the second-most of her young career, only rivaling her 26 points scored against the Tempo in these teams' last matchup on July 8.WIth another comfortable lead, Golden State didn't slip up this time. It won the final quarter handily and earned its 20th win of the season, already just three shy of its 2025 total.Sunday marked the return of former Valkyrie Temi Fagbenle.
