After a five-year hiatus, Notre Dame and USC will renew their college football rivalry beginning with the 2030 season.The two programs agreed to a new four-year deal, according to multiple reports. It will begin with the teams playing a Week 1 matchup in Los Angeles and then kicking off the season in South Bend the following season. USC reportedly preferred to play Notre Dame earlier in the season, before entering Big Ten conference play. The games will be played on Aug. 31, 2030 and Aug. 30, 2031. The only times the two teams didnt play during that span were a three-year period during World War II and one year off in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.The series ended after the 2025 season when negotiations to schedule future games broke down between the two schools. Part of the issue was that USC did not want to commit to a multi-year agreement as the College Football Playoff format was still being determined, the Los Angeles Times reported. The Trojans also did not want to play a non-conference road game that required a cross-country trip amid its Big Ten schedule. In their 96 meetings, Notre Dame has a 53-38-5 record. The Fighting Irish have also won eight of their past 10 matchps with USC, including three of the past four under head coach Marcus Freeman. The programs have met 96 times, with the Irish holding a 53-38-5 all-time advantage. The Notre Dame - USC matchup is the second-most-played series in Notre Dame program history, trailing only Notre Dames series with Navy (98).The Irish are 30-14-1 all-time at home against the Trojans.In their last battle for the Jeweled Shillelagh Trophy, the Fighting Irish defeated the Trojans, 34-24, in South Bend. Notre Dame went on to finish 10-2 and was ranked No. 10 in the seasons final AP poll, while USC went 9-4, ranking No. 20.

The Boston Red Sox are acquiring All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because deadline deal hadn't been announced. The 28-year-old Rutschman is hitting .251 with eight home runs and 47 RBIs this season. He earned an All-Star nod for the third time but is currently on the injured list with left wrist inflammation. He's also dealt with an ankle injury and a concussion this year.If he can return to the field soon, Rutschman is a significant addition for a Boston team that stormed back into the postseason picture with a 15-game winning streak last month. The Red Sox needed catching help, and their offense is also dealing with injuries to Triston Casas, Trevor Story, Roman Anthony and even the recently acquired Curtis Mead.The Orioles drafted Rutschman with the No. 1 overall pick in 2019, but unlike Bobby Witt Jr., the second pick that year, he hasn't signed a long-term contract. Rutschman can become a free agent after next season.Trading him to an AL East rival is a bitter pill for some Baltimore fans. In many ways, he represented both the success and failure of the past few years for the Orioles. He made his debut in 2022 and the team took off, finishing with a winning record that year and then storming to a 101-win campaign in 2023. Baltimore made the playoffs in 2024, but Rutschman slumped down the stretch and was unable to rebound in 2025, when the Orioles collapsed to a last-place finish. He's been better this year but has played in only 67 games. Baltimore is 54-58 and entered Monday 2 1/2 games behind the final playoff spot in the American League.Samuel Basallo, who has 16 homers this season, now becomes Baltimore's clear No. 1 catcher. What a difference a few months makes. On July 1, the Boston Red Sox were 37-48. The postseason felt like a dream. The front office, led by beleaguered chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, was readying itself to sell at the deadline. Then the Sox caught fire, rattling off 15 straight wins to propel themselves back into a playoff spot and back into relevance.That they are here now, acquiring a player such as catcher Adley Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles, is something nobody, not even Breslow, could have foreseen a few months ago.For Boston, the deal makes sense. This organization has shown an ability to pop out high-level pitching prospects like a free vending machine. Anthony Eyanson and Kyson Witherspoon, in particular, have a chance to be impact starters for the Orioles. Yet there is nothing less reliable than a pitching prospect.Rutschman gives Boston a massive upgrade at catcher, a spot where theyve struggled to find consistent production. The deal also keeps the three-time All-Star away from the rival Yankees, who were reportedly interested in Rutschmans services. Its a sign that Breslow, so often criticized for his robotic demeanor and calculating comportment, is adding a bit more F-you into his approach. Thats a good thing.From Baltimores perspective, this trade makes sense in a ruthless way. The Os are four games under .500 and 2.5 games out of a playoff spot entering play Monday. Rutschman is currently on the IL for the fifth time in the past 14 months. He hits free agency at the end of a 2027 season that is likely to be shortened by a labor dispute and, according to reports, hasnt been particularly open to an extension. Baltimore has another impact catcher in Samuel Basallo under contract for the long haul. In this deal, president of baseball operations Mike Elias was able to acquire an impressive quartet of prospects. And, most importantly, Rutschman has not performed at an elite level since the middle of 2024.The analytical model of your choice probably loves this deal for the Orioles.But life and fandom and baseball are much more than a simple value proposition. This deal represents the end of an era in Baltimore, an era that began with Rutschmans selection No. 1 overall in 2019. During his five-season tenure, the Os won a total of zero postseason games. That can be described only as a catastrophic failure. Much of that responsibility falls on Elias shoulders.That doesnt mean the Os wont end up winning this deal. They could be pretty good in 2027. Heck, they could still sneak into the postseason this year. But trading a heralded cornerstone such as Rutschman, particularly in-division, is a gut punch for a fan base that has been rope-a-doped into malaise for a decade now. The Orioles have not finished in the top half of MLB in attendance since 2015.Fans were told that Rutschman would be the face of something special. For a while, that dream looked to be coming true. Baltimore played October baseball in 2023 and 2024. But injuries and underperformance and subpar roster-building have made the past two years an aimless slog. Trading Rutschman isnt unforgivable in and of itself; the path that got them here is what stings.Elias, for all his wheeling and dealing, has simply not earned the benefit of the doubt. Thats not to say he and his front office havent had wins, but the entire body of work is so thoroughly underwhelming.Eight years in, and the results dont justify the process.

LEXINGTON, Ky. Kentucky football coach Will Stein sat in front of a room full of cameras and reporters Monday and said something that, from most first-year head coaches, would sound like a dodge. There are no starters. Not yet. Maybe not for weeks."There really are still no starters," Stein said. "We can project out where we feel like this team is going to be, but I want this team to be as competitive as possible from top down with the roster."Coming from Stein, it isn't a dodge. It's the thesis of his entire first season in Lexington. Everybody remembers the soundbite from media days: "because of me," the four words that turned into a national headline before Stein had coached a single down at Kentucky. He isn't surprised it traveled the way it did. He's also not particularly interested in relitigating it."I know more than anything it's about the people in our organization, and that's really important to me, more than me," Stein said.That's the real story here, and it's a far more interesting one than a quote taken out of context. Stein isn't building a program around his own rsum, the Oregon pedigree, or the offenses that have traveled with him from stop to stop. He's building it around numbers. Multiple numbers, at every position, all competing for the same job."We have to have strength in numbers," Stein said. "That, to me, is a key component to play winning football, especially in October and November, where championships happen."You can see that philosophy in how Kentucky has attacked the roster all offseason: high school recruiting, the portal, junior college, all of it, all at once. Stein added two JuCo running backs to a room that already features Kentucky's returning uncertainty at the position, and he wasn't shy about why."Both those players, if they would have been able to come out in January, would have had a multitude of offers throughout the entire country," Stein said. "We wanted to exhaust everything that we can to keep enhancing this roster, regardless of availability of players."Martels Carter has been fully installed at running back. The quarterback room got an extra arm added after spring practice, a decision Stein made with the bluntness of a coach who's been burned before."I've been in situations where you don't have a guy that's necessarily ready to go into the game and then you look up and you're in a bad position," he said. "So we added people there."The headline job, of course, belongs to Kenny Minchey, and Stein's description of him reads like a checklist for the modern quarterback: accurate, on-time thrower, good feet, mobile, high football IQ. But Minchey isn't getting a coronation. He's getting a competition, with Callum Wither, Matt Ponatoski, Brennen Ward, and JacQai Long all in the room behind him."There's been nothing given in that room," Stein said, "so we're excited about those guys to go out there and compete."Health-wise, the early injury report is more maintenance than alarm. Nic Anderson and Jovantae Barnes are working back into full-speed reps after strong summers, Jaden Smith is in the same boat, and Tegra Tshabola is expected back within a week or so after a minor procedure. Stein singled out Sam Greene as someone who's "looking great" and expected to factor in on defense. None of it, in Stein's words, is "a major season-ending setback."Up front, Coleton Price anchors the offensive line at center, "as good of a center as I've been around," Stein said and on the back end, safeties Ty and Jordan give defensive coordinator Jay Bateman a pair of players who've combined for thousands of SEC snaps between them, with Ty coming off an All-SEC season.There's a personnel move worth noting off the field, too. Kentucky promoted Pete Nochta into a bigger front-office role last week, and Stein didn't treat it as a shake-up he treated it as overdue. Nochta is Lexington-born and bred, the son of a high school principal whose own father played football at Kentucky, and he was one of Stein's first calls after he took the job."Pete could be a GM across all of college football," Stein said. "He's very smart. He's extremely well organized, and he played football. I think that's really important at the GM role."That local thread runs through Stein himself. His father played at Kentucky. Stein has talked openly about connection being the foundation of buy-in not compliance, connection especially with 45 new players folded into the roster this offseason."You have to know the guys next to you," Stein said. "I know the man to my left and right's story. I know where they're from... connected teams are tough to beat."Even the schedule carries a bit of that Kentucky-specific texture. The Cats open September 5 against Youngstown State, with in-state rival Louisville pushed to the back end of the calendar, a TV-driven quirk of college football scheduling that Stein has made peace with because it's the one thing on his list he can't control."You just control what you can," he said. "We're playing on September 5th at 1:00 against Youngstown State, so I know I'll be here for that game, and that's all I can control right now."Everything else the process, the details, the depth is very much within his control, and it's where he keeps steering the conversation, no matter what question he's asked."Our process really is our winning edge," Stein said. "How we practice, how we meet, how we recover, how we eat, sleep, and plan as a coach. All those are what I am going to double down on, and I'm not going to stop."So no, there is no depth chart yet. That's the point. Fall camp exists to build one, position by position, competition by competition, until Stein has exactly what he says he wants most."I want them to see a team that gets better from week 1 to week 12," Stein said. "If you can get better literally every single day and every single week, that to me shows sustainability of a program, buy-in from the players, and it's going to result in winning football."The clock on that starts now. Toronto Blue Jays designated hitter George SpringerThe Boston Red Sox have reportedly pulled off a blockbuster with the Baltimore Orioles to acquire Adley Rutschman, but there is still time for them to make more moves.Last week, CBS Sports' Julian McWilliams reported that George Springer was interested in joining the Red Sox via trade. However, McWilliams is now reporting that such a deal is unlikely. Springer will be a free agent after the seaosn, so trading him would make sense for the Toronto Blue Jays.Even though the Blue Jays pulled off a big trade for Jos Soriano, they are still expected to be sellers. They already traded Kevin Gausman, and Springer is a few months away from free agency as well. He could be on the move, but his fit with the Red Sox never made much sense.He is a designated hitter, and the Red Sox already have Masataka Yoshida in that spot. When Roman Anthony returns, he could also spend time as the team's designated hitter. He has a .976 OPS since the All-Star Break, but still, it would not be easy to fit him into the regular lineup.
