Receiver Mike Evans misses practice for the 49ers with a strained quadriceps
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) Wide receiver Mike Evans missed practice for the San Francisco 49ers on Monday because of a strained quadriceps in the latest injury to hit the team's receiver room.Evans was able to attend practice as a spectator and even caught a couple of passes on the side during a special teams drill. But his absence left the Niners extremely short-handed at receiver.Projected starter Ricky Pearsall is already done for the season because of an injury to his posterior cruciate ligament last season that hasn't healed and requires surgery. The team's top draft pick, De'Zhaun Stribling, has missed the past two practices with tightness in his hamstring, and veteran Christian Kirk has been out since straining his calf in the team's first practice this summer.Recently signed Deebo Samuel took part in his second practice since returning to the 49ers on a one-year deal but the team is counting heavily on Evans this season to be quarterback Brock Purdy's No. 1 target on the outside.Evans, who turns 33 later this month, signed a three-year, $42.5 million deal with San Francisco in March after spending his first 12 seasons in Tampa Bay. He became the first player in NFL history to have at least 1,000 yards receiving in each of his first 11 seasons, making six Pro Bowls. But he has been hampered by injuries the past two seasons, missing three games in 2024 and nine last season because of a hamstring injury and broken collarbone. Evans had only 30 catches for 368 yards and three TDs last season. The 49ers are also short-handed at running back with rookie Kaelon Black missing practice after hurting his adductor on Saturday. Jordan James is out with broken ribs and Isaac Guerendo is on the physically unable to perform list after injuring his pectoral muscle in the offseason. The Niners did get defensive linemen C.J. West and Romello Height back at practice but are still missing safety Malik Mustapha (hamstring), defensive lineman Keion White (adductor), offensive lineman Vederian Lowe, and defensive linemen Cameron Sample (knee) and Gracen Halton (knee). The 49ers have also been without their head coach for the start of training camp as Kyle Shanahan has been recovering from a concussion suffered in a car crash on July 14. Shanahan once again came out during practice to watch as assistant head coach Chris Foerster ran the session.Shanahan even addressed the full team after practice and keeps making steps toward his return.___AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL

Aaron Rodgers invokes Anthony Fauci while dodging Pat McAfee question
Peanut butter, jelly and bread. Salt, vinegar and potato chips. Aaron Rodgers, the "Pat McAfee Show" and political rambling. All classic trios. The veteran quarterback joined ESPN's "Pat McAfee Show" from Pittsburgh Steelers training camp Monday, Aug. 3, and made it clear he had a lot to get off his chest. Asked about his mindset going into his final season in the NFL after 21 completed years in the league, Rodgers instead railed against former Chief Medical Advisor to the President Anthony Fauci."I'm gonna plead the Fifth," Rodgers said. "Like that absolute coward Tony Fauci. Absolute coward. Are you kidding me?"Rodgers' refusal to answer the question was a tongue-in-cheek call-out of Fauci, who invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination more than 100 times at a congressional hearing on Wednesday, July 29. The Steelers' quarterback, who famously misled the media about his COVID-19 vaccination status in 2021, has long been critical of Fauci and the U.S. government's handling of the COVID epidemic. He went on to criticize Fauci for more than two minutes in his latest "Pat McAfee Show" appearance."I'm pleading the Fifth You've gotta be kidding me" ~ @AaronRodgers12#PMSLivepic.twitter.com/kg3y0uMxxR Pat McAfee (@PatMcAfeeShow) August 3, 2026AARON RODGERS WIFE: Steelers QB says spouse helped him reunite with his familyAaron Rodgers slams ESPNRodgers then pivoted to call out ESPN for what he called a failure to provide enough coverage about the scandal involving former NFL insider Dianna Russini and New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel."What is the network doing?" Rodgers said. "You have literally an individual that maybe used to work at ESPN that covers our league at the highest level, and there's a major scandal, and it's just like nobody can (expletive) talk about it? What are we even doing here?"Russini worked at ESPN from 2015 until 2023, when she took a job with The Athletic as their primary NFL insider.#Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers also unloaded on the Dianna Russini/Mike Vrabel offseason story.Rodgers says the story and its ramifications weren't covered properly. Rodgers compared the incident to his NFL MVP win after the 2021 season, when Chicago Bears writer and MVP voter Hub Arkush said he would not give Rodgers his vote due to the quarterback's off-field behavior."That's real life," Rodgers said. "How are we allowing these people to have an impact?"Russini resigned from her job at The Athletic on April 14 amid questions about her relationship with Vrabel.Rodgers and the Steelers are set to kick off the veteran quarterback's farewell tour on Sept. 13, when they host the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1 of the regular season. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Aaron Rodgers invokes Anthony Fauci while dodging Pat McAfee question

Will the Broncos sign Taysom Hill? Sean Payton gives an update
It certainly sounds like Taysom Hill could land a role with the Denver Broncos if he's healthy and decides to play this season.Just days after Hill announced he won't return to the New Orleans Saints in 2026, Broncos coach Sean Payton told NFL Network on Saturday that the team will explore bringing Hill in at tight end. Speaking to media members after Monday's practice, Payton made it clear that nothing is imminent, but he also seemed to hint that he could have a role for Hill if the tight end wants it."There's no hurry right now I'm going to see him here in five days [at Drew Brees' Hall of Fame ceremony], so... we'll see where he's at and kind of go from there," Payton said. Payton, who claimed a then-rookie Hill off the waiver wire with the Saints in 2017, noted that he'll check in on Hill's health and where he's at mentally in Canton, Ohio. Dr. Karim Meijer, Denver's head physician, performed Hill's knee surgery in 2024, and the tight end has been back to Colorado for a few follow-ups, so the Broncos should have a good idea of his health."I don't want to assume that he still wants to play," Payton said. "You know, I haven't had a chance to talk with him ... we'll see where that goes." Asked Sean Payton where #Broncos are at with evaluating bringing in Taysom Hill. Theres no hurry right now. Said hell see Hill in five days at Drew Brees HOF induction.Said later he has to see where Hill is at mentally, if he even wants to play another season. pic.twitter.com/X0bsjWmfvc Luca Evans (@bylucaevans) August 3, 2026Broncos tight end Adam Trautman, one of Hill's old teammates in New Orleans, said Hill would be a "great addition" if signed by Denver's front office.
