Allegheny football bites from PAC media day
Braden Layer and Kurt Knobeloch of the Allegheny football team were in attendance for the Presidents Athletic Conferences media day on Tuesday. Below are quotes previewing the upcoming season for the GatorsHead coach Braden Layer on the end of 2025 building momentum for 2026Two wins over the last three weeks (of last season) doesnt roll over into our record in 2026. I think it helped us kickstart our offseason workouts. It built momentum leading into spring ball, but ultimately, Im sitting here with a lot of other head coaches that believe there is a lot in front of us. Theres a lot of reasons to be optimistic about the season. But until we run out there and play Anderson University in the first week in September, its on us as a staff and us as players to come together. (Last year) only matters a little bit in the grand scheme of things come August.Layer on returning eight defensive starters That level of continuity really matters, at least in my opinion, especially in small college athletics. I think our front seven has a chance to be very formidable. Drew Evans for the first time in his career got to focus just on football. Huriel Calice has been a mainstay for us on the defensive line. Hes shifting out primarily just to an edge player. Obviously, you have Michael (Schanck) on the interior. You have (Matthew) Phillips, you have (Joshua) Guenther you have a whole lot of guys that have accumulated a ton of snaps. And I think were fortunate to bring in some potential impact players that are new to the program as well. At the second level, Coltin (Colucci) does everything for us defensively. We were able to convince him to come back for a fifth year. Hes kind of been the heartbeat of our team now for a while. But its not just him. You know you have Javi Edwards coming back, you have CJ Gissentaner coming back. I thought one of the best freshmen in the conference last year was Ryan Croston, who was our nickel. One of the best blitzers and pass rushers for us in our blitz package last year returns only a year bigger and better.Layers goals and expectations for this season We want to be better than we were the year before. I feel fortunate to be around last years senior class, and to be a part of their journey. They were the first senior class at Allegheny in eight years that left with more wins than the year before. Now the challenge for Kurt (Knobeloch) and his class is to continue to raise the bar. We talk always about leaving the program better than you found it. So for these guys its trying to get to an above .500 record in conference play. Its an opportunity to challenge our nonconference games. We were 0-2 in those last year, so we certainly want to hit the win column in one of our first two weeks, if not both.Senior WR Kurt Knobeloch on quarterback Carson ColluciFirst, I would just want to applaud his toughness and his commitment last year. He fought through that injury for quite a while, and were real proud of him. Hes our glue guy, you know. Hes our rock on offense. Hes our motivator, our leader. Obviously, as a quarterback, its very comforting to have a returning quarterback. Our pass-catching group, were super excited to be able to work with Carson.

Ed Mailliard honored with Dow Carnahan Media Award at PAC Football Media Day
Ed Mailliard has been to more fanciful places than Latrobe, Pennsylvania, in his illustrious 50-year career as a sports media member.Thats not to say Saint Vincent College, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers training camp for 60 years now, is beneath Mailliard. Its quite the opposite, in fact.Mailliard, a Meadville native, has spent 40 years as a sports photographer. His most recognizable work can be seen on Topps trading cards for the MLBs spring training, which he has been doing since 1987. But Malliards sports career began long before those iconic photos. It started in 1972, when Mailliard began working for the Meadville Tribune as a sportswriter. He retired from the Tribune in 2013, but he stayed active in the local sports scene by continuing to shoot photos for Allegheny College other local schools.Over the course of 54 years, Mailliard has been promoting local athletes through his photography work. His roots are deep in the Crawford County Area and his passion for Allegheny College athletics is what brought him to Saint Vincent College on Tuesday.Since 2016, the Presidents Athletic Conference has awarded the Dow Carnahan Media Award to a media member or on-campus representative for their coverage or promotion of the conferences student athletes, coaches and programs. On Tuesday, Mailliard became the 11th winner of the award. This is a distinguished award that I was really surprised to hear that I was receiving, Mailliard said in his acceptance speech. And I did some research on previous winners and I quickly realized I was in pretty good company. Im truly humbled to accept this on their behalf as well as my own.The Dow Carnahan Award gets its namesake from former Saint Vincent College play-by-play announcer Dow Carnahan. The legendary Latrobe voice spent 30 years at WCNS-AM 1480, calling numerous Saint Vincent and Latrobe High School football and basketball games.Like Carnahan, Mailliard recognized early on the impact the PAC had on his community.54 years ago next month, Mailliard said, I, as a sportswriter for the Middle Tribune, covered my first Presidents Athletic Conference event and I quickly realized what a special place the PAC holds in this region. While Mailliard has been all over the country shooting photos of some of sports best players, his heart is with Meadville and in turn the PAC, which shows in his work.Yes, hes worked with brands such as Sports Illustrated, Sporting News, Baseball Digest and Topps. But he didnt do it for the recognition or the stature. He did it out of love.Receiving the Dow Carnahan award, just like the opportunity to work for those brands, is a byproduct of a passion to freeze moments in time for fans to look back on.Sure, hes got photos of Shohei Ohtani, but the way he takes photos of the Dodgers ace is the same way he does of Allegheny athletes. I always say, always take a knee because you make the players look taller, you make them look bigger and stronger, and get ready if they get the ball in their hands.Sports are sports. And its that approach that made Ed Mailliard the 2026 Dow Carnahan Awardee.

Inter Milan and AC Milan battle to 1-1 draw in Perth friendly
Luka Modric thrilled a big crowd in Perth with a 30-minute cameo (MARCO BERTORELLO)Frenchman Christopher Nkunku converted a late penalty as AC Milan drew 1-1 with rivals Inter Milan in a lacklustre pre-season derby on Wednesday in Perth. In front of 52,310 fans, Serie A champions Inter Milan appeared to be claiming the bragging rights after Federico Dimarco's strike from close range in the 52nd minute. But Nkunku was brought down by Carlos Augusto in the 83rd minute before squaring the contest with a superbly taken penalty. The result ensured that new AC Milan coach Ruben Amorim is still seeking a maiden victory after his reign began with a 2-2 draw in a friendly against Celtic in Glasgow last month.Amorim, fired as Manchester United coach in January, has been tasked with turning around ailing AC Milan, who missed out on the Champions League last season. He will have some concerns his new side were fortunate to escape with a draw following an error-strewn performance. They will be encouraged by veteran midfield maestro Luka Modric playing the last 30 minutes having recently signed a one-year extension."It was nice to get some minutes under the belt and I felt good," Modric said."It's good to have these kinds of games to prepare for the season."I think we did a lot of good things and hopefully we can just improve."The match was the first for AC Milan since the death of Franco Baresi, who captained the club during a golden era in the 1980s and 1990s.There was a minute's silence before the match with players from both teams linking arms.Modric started on the bench much to the disappointment of the crowd, with the Croatian receiving loud applause in the warm-up.AC Milan dominated the early exchanges with teenager Alphadjo Cisse and Samuel Chukwueze, whose future with the club is reportedly uncertain, providing some dash.American Yunus Musah appeared set to break the deadlock in the 18th minute only for his bullet to smash into the left post, leaving AC Milan further frustrated.Inter Milan then took control of possession as the game went through a lull towards half-time.With both coaches ringing the changes, the game opened up after the interval as Dimarco pounced on sluggish AC Milan defending.Modric entered in the 62nd minute amid a big ovation from the terraces, but AC Milan's struggles continued. They appeared set for defeat before Nkunku stepped up late.AC Milan will continue their pre-season against Chelsea in Jakarta on Saturday.Inter Milan -- who beat Manchester City on penalties in Hong Kong on Saturday -- will remain in Perth to play Juventus on the same day.tl/dh

Dispatch from The National: How eBay’s Data Can Help the Hobby
By now, youve heard the same advice a thousand times: Stop purchasing packs. Buy singles! But what if your nearest local card shop is hours away or youre searching for a chase card for sale located across the country? Thats where eBay comes in.From cards to Funko Pops, eBay has been a vital lifeline for collectors for decades. As the worldwide brand continues to adapt to meet the needs of its users, Mantel met with Luci Yang, eBays GM of U.S. Collectibles, at The National to learn more about how the marketplaces latest changes. Heres what she had to say about her career, the importance of community, and how eBay is putting powerful data into the hands of collectors.Luci Yang, eBays GM of U.S. CollectiblesYouve got undergrad degrees from Harvard, and both an MBA and a JD from Yale. How did you end up working for eBay?Everyones path is a little windier than people expect, and mine was too. I spent a long time earlier in my career in business and management consulting. I joined eBay about five years ago, right as the company was leaning hard into its focus-category strategyyouve probably heard our CEO talk about that.At the time, I joined the automotive parts and accessories team, since that was one of the focus categories then. Over the last five years, Ive worked in parts and accessories, electronics, and heavy equipment, another focus area for eBay. This past January, I moved into collectibles. So I come from more of a corporate background, but Im excited to tap into the childhood passion of collecting. Right now my role is head of U.S. collectibles, with trading cards a big piece of it, along with comics, toys, coins and more. You started on the auto side of things. What parallels does that have to collectibles? Two things stand out.First, we really value enthusiast communities across all of our categories. I saw that strongly in automotive, and I see it just as strongly here at The National, across sports cards and collectible card games. Theres a real community feel to it.Second, eBay operates as one platform across these categories, so a lot of the same priorities carry over, trust being a big one. In automotive, that shows up as things like Guaranteed Fit, which helps you search for and confirm a part actually fits your vehicle. In trading cards, its Authenticity Guarantee, making sure the card youre buying is authentic and arrives in the condition you expect.eBay has so much consumer data. How are you using those insights to make changes on the collectibles side? One of the things were most excited about is the amount of data we can bring back to the hobby community. Over the last year weve focused on consolidating that data and presenting it back to shoppers through our Price Guide tool. Price Guide lets you get accurate comps on a card youre looking to buy, sell or grade; you can see sold listings and current listings of the same card, CGC and PSA pop-report data, and other relevant market data across the industry. Were excited to keep building that out. What trends are you seeing in the collectibles space?Whats fascinating to me, especially since Im new to the space, is how closely the data mirrors whats happening in pop culture in real time. In the first half of this year, our top players were the usual names youd expectJordan, Ohtani, LeBron and so onbut Victor Wembanyama was also one of our top five searches, which makes sense given the run hes had. And with the World Cup, soccer spiked quite a bit; some of our top soccer searches were up more than 200% month-over-month between May and June. What do major events like The National teach you about the collectibles space that you dont see online? We love being at The National. This might be our largest presence here ever. Its a chance to be part of the community: seeing people, talking to the buyers and sellers who use eBay every day. This is the best place to really understand the heartbeat of the hobby. I felt that viscerally being here, in a way you dont get just learning about it academically.I also love bringing new innovations to customers and showing them live: livestreams, showcasing inventory going up for auction like the Upper Deck Michael Jordan pieces, and displaying the new packaging for our outbound Authenticity Guaranteed card membership, which is rolling out later this year.[On that note], Authenticity Guarantee has now processed five million cards since it launched, a pretty big milestone. What was your last pick up on eBay? Share it with us on Mantel.
