There aren't a ton of trades out there that the Lakers could realistically make, but one was recently floated involving the Dallas Mavericks. WashingtonMavericks would receive: Jarred Vanderbilt, Jaden Hardy, Jake LaRavia, DaltonKnecht, Cameron Carr, and a 2032 first-round pick swap.Its no secret that the Lakers have been trying to offload Vanderbilts contract since the start of the offseason in a sign-and-trade deal for Jonathan Kuminga. With talks no longer progressing with the Atlanta Hawks, the Lakers have reportedly turned their attention to Washington, who played a key role in helping the Luka Doncic-led Mavericks reach the 2024 NBA FinalsAs for Thompson, the Los Angeles native has been rumored to join the Lakers for several years, dating back to his free-agency decision in 2024 when he chose the Mavericks to play alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, Sai Mohan wrote.This type of trade would be an absolute steal for the Lakers, even if Thompson isn't what he once was. She played guard for the Huskies basketball team in the 1990s and spent 23 years as a sideline reporter for football broadcasts. Last week, she was named the football programs new radio play-by-play announcer.Woodward takes over for Tony Castricone, who left to succeed the retired Gene Deckerhoff as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers radio voice. According to The Athletic, Woodward is believed to be the first woman in the FBS to hold such a role. She will make her official debut on Sept. 6, when the Huskies host Washington State for the Apple Cup.We recently caught up with Woodward, who is also the Portland Fires television play-by-play announcer, to discuss her promotion.Note: This interview has been edited and condensed for length and clarity. Was this something you were immediately interested in once the job became available?Elise Woodward:Absolutely. Once I found out that Tony was taking the job with Tampa Bay, I started talking to the folks involved in the decision-making. They were really excited, and I was really excited to see if it would work. And yes, this is an awesome opportunity. Ive been involved with the program for so long, and Ive done play-by-play for so long that its just a perfect matchin my opinion for UW football.What does it mean to be the voice of Huskies football, especially as an alum?To have the opportunity at my alma mater, I understand what it means. I know the history. I dont have to do deep-dive research because Ive lived it. Its a special opportunity to call the games for UW and be part of your alma mater. Its a responsibility as the voice of football. It carries a lot more (weight) than many other positions and, in many ways, its the voice of the athletic department, too. So, yeah, its an amazing opportunity to help push the University of Washington athletic department forward.This is such an honor and a dream come true. I love Husky football to my core. Yeah, its going to be a lot of fun to get the season rolling. Theres no warming up.Youve done play-by-playfor other sports. Have you always wanted to call football?I grew up a huge football fan. My brother played football at Oregon. Its the first sport I remember watching as a kid. The pomp and circumstance of football are outstanding. People care deeply and passionately, and its the No. 1 sport in America. So yes, its always been something I wanted to do. I had a chance to fill in for Tony on the radio. I called multiple games on TV for the Pac-12 Network. Its going to be a ton of fun. Its going to be a blast.What do you anticipate will be your biggest challenge?Most of the work Ive done has been on TV, so radio is a different medium with its own challenges. Its going to be the far-side plays, deep in the end zone from way up top at Husky Stadium, where I may not have a monitor. I was already looking for the best set of binoculars I can get because its very difficult at night, especially to see numbers on the far side. Theres no double-checking a monitor like you can for TV, so your naked eyes are the entire story. She was here in Seattle with the WNBA. Ive known her a long time. She said something that resonated with me a long time ago. She said, I never want to get a job because I am a woman, but I also never dont want to get a job because Im a woman. I feel the same way. This is a special opportunity for me to be like an offensive lineman and hopefully open up some holes for people behind me to have an easier path to get a job, but certainly in no way do I think it should be the headline. I feel like my years of hard work in this profession across all sports and all roles, and the trust Ive earned inside and outside the athletic department, are the reasons I was hired.When you were young, what did you want to become?My goal was to be a professional basketball player. I realized that wasnt going to happen, so I was like, Im going to be a coach. You cant major in coaching. I was at UW and was like, OK, whats the next closest thing to keep me involved in sports? That was broadcast communications, so I majored in it. I had some amazing internships. I got to be in the clubhouse for the Mariners run in 95, with Randy, Alex, Edgar, and the whole crew. Then I had an internship with Prime Sports, which was then Fox Sports Northwest, which then became Root Sports. Anyway, I had a great internship there, and they hired me when I was done playing at UW. I never had to leave the Seattle market. I never went into coaching. That part was very important to me because I love what Im doing with the Portland Fire. Thats been a huge opportunity. Its great that I can do both. I probably will not take as many events in the fall, just because Husky football has 105-man rosters and there are so many logistics, coaches shows, and interviews. Its going to be very busy in the fall, so I probably will not do as many volleyball or soccer matches as I have in the past.Since you got the new gig, have you heard from anyone you didnt expect?There have been so many, and Ive tried to get back to each person. Its been overwhelming, with so many people reaching out, from childhood friends I havent talked to in a long time to people at the University of Washington. The Seattle Seahawks concluded their ninth training camp practice on Tuesday. The competition for carries at running back continues to move forward. Rookie Jadarian Price, George Holani, and Emanuel Wilson all remain in the mix and active for reps.One emerging theme from the ninth practice is the possibility of Wilson capturing a role as the Seahawks' short-yardage back. With Kenneth Walker III having left in free agency, the Seahawks need a new short-yardage back.Listed at 226 pounds on the Seahawks' official website, if all weights are accurate, Wilson is approximately 15 pounds heavier than both Price and Holani. That makes the former Fort Valley State College standout a strong contender to be a powerful short-yardage runner. The Chicago Bears suffered a massive loss to their defense on Monday with safety Coby Bryant suffering a knee injury that is expected to keep him out of action for 8-10 weeks. Bryant was the team's big signing in free agency this offseason, coming over from Seattle where he won a Super Bowl championship with the Seahawks last season, and he was expected to be a big piece of the puzzle for defensive coordinator Dennis Allen this year.Those expectations have not changed for the Bears or Allen, but they have put on hold until he returns to full health on the football field, according to Chicago's defensive coordinator. Allen recently spoke about Bryant's injury and how the team will pivot without the player who was expected to help lead their secondary."Obviously it sucks to lose a guy like that for any particular time," Allen said Tuesday. "He's a big part of what we had planned to do and will still be a big part of what we have planned to do. In all adversity comes also opportunity so it'll be another opportunity for someone to step up. Whether it be somebody in the safety room to step up and take on that role or some of our other guys in the room to step up and become playmakers and leaders for the defense. It's part of football, part of what you deal with, and you move on. Hopefully he'll be on the quicker end and we'll get him back sooner than later."A lot of the focus at the safety position will now move to rookie first-round pick Dillon Thieneman and veteran Cam Lewis, who will serve as Bryant's replacement.The Bears drafted Thieneman with the hopes of having him not only work alongside Bryant in a new look secondary at the safety position but also learn from him.
