Arizona high school 2A football teams are scrambling to find a replacement opponent, after Glendale Prep this week canceled its varsity season because of safety concerns and the team not having any senior players."The Great Hearts Glendale Prep Football program remains strong, committed, and focused on developing our student-athletes," athletic director Mike Fiore said in a statement from the school. "With 10 seniors graduating last yearandno current seniors on the team this year, we determined that competing at the varsity level this season could create unnecessary safety concerns for our younger student-athletes. As a result, Glendale Prep will pause varsity competition for the 2026 season."The statement added the school will have a full junior varsity schedule this fall.Glendale Prep went 7-4 in 2A last season, opening with 49-0 wins over Arete Prep and Antelope. After losing to eventual state champion Scottsdale Christian, 56-14, the Griffins reeled off four straight wins before losing their final two to Veritas Prep and Eloy Santa Cruz.The AIA JV schedule for Glendale Prep lists five opponents, including a game with Scottsdale Christian's JV and back-to-back weeks against NFL Yet.The decision to cancel the varsity season is causing 2A teams to scramble to find opponents to fill the week they were supposed to play Glendale Prep. UPDATE: After Fridays training camp practice, Giants coach John Harbaugh downplayed Cam Skattebos apparent injury, while speaking to reporters in West Virginia. Harbaugh said Skattebo isnt dealing with anything serious and is just continuing to work his way back from last years major ankle injury. Heres the full context of what Harbaugh said: Hes probably working through the football shape part of it. Hes coming off of rehab, so thats what that was. It wont be a serious injury at all. ***The Giants on Friday held their ninth training camp practice in West Virginia, out of 10 sessions. And they got a bit of bad news, as star running back Cam Skattebo exited with an injury and did not return. The nature and severity of his injury remain unclear. According to reports from The Greenbrier resort, where the Giants are practicing for the first two weeks of coach John Harbaughs first camp, heres how Skattebo got hurt: He limped to the sideline after rookie inside linebacker Arvell Reese knocked him down on back-to-back runs. Skattebo watched the rest of practice from the sideline. So its perhaps a good sign that he didnt head inside with trainers. Skattebo, of course, flashed tons of potential as a rookie last season, but the jury is still out on whether he can be a long-term true No. 1 back. And most notably, Skattebo is returning from a serious ankle injury that he sustained last season in Philadelphia. So far, he has bounced back nicely from that injury and has moved smoothly in practice. Skattebo was a full participant in practice from the very first day of Giants camp in West Virginia. So barring a setback (or a new unrelated injury), he definitely will be ready for Week 1. Skattebo relies on an intense, physical style of play during games. He seeks out contact, rather than running from it. And he doesnt exactly have a massive frame. So you have to wonder how all that will impact his ability to stay healthy in the NFL for years to come. Got it.It is true that the Dallas Cowboys do not employ one of the very best running backs in the NFL, but they certainly employ one of legitimate and capable talent. Last season showed that. Williams finished last season with over 1,200 rushing yards (1,201 specifically so just barely, still counts) and found the endzone 11 times. He was a key part of what made the Cowboys offense such a threat and particularly what made it such a dynamic one.This week made the Cowboys front office look brilliantIf you havent been following news across the NFL this week then you may have missed the way that the running back market ballooned. Bijan Robinson got the party started with a record-breaking extension. His deal with the Atlanta Falcons was a three-year extension worth up to $75M which made him the highest-paid running back in NFL history.Then came Jonathan Taylor and the Indianapolis Colts. Indy extended their star to the tune of a two-year, $44M deal. On Friday the Detroit Lions joined the fold as they extended Jahmyr Gibbs to a three-year deal worth up to $75.75M ($51.5M guaranteed) so Robinsons spot at the top of the market ended rather quickly.All three of these running backs finished ahead of Williams last season, but only five others did as well. Williams was a top-10 back last year by rushing yards, and while not the only way of measuring a running backs worth, the Cowboys have him for pennies on the proverbial dollar.Dallas actually struck a deal with Williams all the way back in February. It was a three-year, $24M that helped keep him in tow, stopped him from hitting free agency outright, and most importantly got done before the deals listed above and others that came this offseason like Breece Hall and DeVon Achane.Simply put, the Cowboys have a good thing going right now with Javonte Williams and they clearly knew it. We talk all the time about how getting ahead of things generally makes you look smart from a financial perspective, and that this deal is so far in the rearview mirror certainly corroborates that. Even if you would prefer any of the other backs listed in this overall discussion, would you really prefer them for their price tags? Relative to the context of the Cowboys current roster?We havent had a chance to say this a lot in recent seasons, but good for the Cowboys in taking care of business (literally) when and how they did here. It all started early in practice when defensive lineman Matt Henningsen went down during a drill, in what ended up being a dreaded non-contact drill. He was clearly in pain and was carted off the field. It looked bad, and unfortunately for Henningsen, it ended up being bad.9NEWS Denvers Mike Klis is reporting that Matt Henningsen suffered a torn Achilles, one year to the date of him suffering the same injury last year. He rehabbed and got back into football shape and was having a good camp, according to reports, just to suffer the same season-ending injury exactly one year later. Tough break for Henningsen and the Broncos.Devastating news: #Broncos DL Matt Henningsen suffered a torn Achilles today per source. It occurred one year after he tore his other Achilles during joint practice with 49ers in Santa Clara.All that rehab. All that work to come back. And Henningsen was having a good camp. He was visibly upset and was talking to a trainer. He would end up walking to the locker room with the trainer. We have had no updates and can only speculate on it being a likely soft-tissue lower-body injury, but the exact location and severity are unknown at this time. While Marvin was walking off the field, tight end/fullback Nate Adkins would end up following him. How he was hurt wasnt seen by the media, and the details surrounding it are unknown at this point in time, but both of these will be something to monitor moving forward.Head Coach Sean Payton will be away from the team until Sunday, so well hear from DC Vance Joseph tomorrow, who will hopefully provide some updates. The Broncos will likely need to address the defensive line and wide receiver positions in the coming days. If Christian Darrisaw cant stay healthy, Minnesota will need a reliable left tackle across from the recently extended Brian ONeill."It would be bold for this front office to invest in the offensive line based on what they have built at the moment.
