Carter gave him his gold jacket. Why wasn't there a Cardinals connection?There almost was. Fitzgerald said former Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner, also a Hall of Famer, was No. 2 on his list. The Boston Red Sox have lost three games since July 3. Three.The club posted its 27th win its last 30 games on Friday, blowing out the Athletics 13-1 to improve their record to 64-51. They were once 37-48, and now theyre tied with the New York Yankees for second place in the AL East and the ALs top wild-card spot.Its an unfathomable run of success given how the team was previously performing, having fired manager Alex Cora in April and faced similar calls to dump chief baseball officer Craig Breslow. They are the fifth team since integration to win 27 of 30, joining the 1947 Yankees, 1953 Yankees, 1977 Kansas City Royals and 2017 Cleveland Indians.This span also includes a club record 15-game winning streak from last month. They are now on a different streak of eight straight wins.Fridays win saw rookie starting pitcher Payton Tolle make history with 14 strikeouts across six innings of work with 2 hits and 1 run allowed.Per ESPNs Mike Monaco, the 24-year-old Tolle is the youngest MLB pitcher to post 14 strikeouts in a game since the late Jos Fernndez in 2014. In Red Sox history, hes the youngest pitcher to do it since Roger Clemens, in the seven-time Cy Young Award winners 20-strikeout game in 1986.As for the days offense, it come from pretty much everyone. Six different Red Sox batters posted multiple hits. Every starter had at least one run scored or two RBI. Jarren Duran posted the teams only homer, to open the scoring, but 15 hits and a 7-for-12 line with runners in scoring position means a night where runs come easy.With two more home games against the As, who are so moribund they just fired longtime general manager David Forst, then a four-game road series against the last-place Toronto Blue Jays, the Red Sox have an open road to continuing their run of success.

Payton Tolle struck out a career-high 14 in six innings, Wilyer Abreu drove in three runs, and the Boston Red Sox won their ninth game in a row with a 13-1 rout of the Athletics on Friday night.The Red Sox are just the seventh team since 1920 to win 27 or more in a 30-game span, and the only team to begin their run under .500.Tolle (7-6) was the first Red Sox pitcher to fan 14 since Chris Sale on May 8, 2019. He was perfect through four innings, and allowed one run on two hits.Jarren Durans two-run homer over the Green Monster in left field opened the scoring and sparked Bostons five-run second inning. Jake Rogers had an RBI double, and Abreu added a two-run double.Abreus 380-foot double to right would have been a homer in every MLB ballpark except for Fenway Park, per Statcast.Three more came across in the fourth off the bats of Andruw Monasterio, Abreu, and Masataka Yoshida. Yoshida and Caleb Durbin each added one more to get the Red Sox into double-digit scoring for the second consecutive game.Jack Perkins (2-8) gave up five runs on five hits in three innings. The rain stopped and later the sun came out for the Minnesota Vikings training camp practice today, which was in full pads. It wasnt nearly as intense as the padded practice on Wednesday, nor was it really as eventful, but nevertheless some tid bits here and there can be gleaned from the performance.So, with that, lets get into it.Quarterback CompetitionThis was another practice where Kyler Murray got most of the first-team reps, which has been the trend for several practices now. But today J.J. McCarthy had the better practice. Today McCarthy was near the high-end of the range of performance weve seen from him in training camp going back to last year. He didnt exceed the high-end of his range into higher territory which would be considered improvement, but he looked sharp on most of his throws, but nearly all of them would be considered of the more routine variety. He did have a couple nice intermediate completions in team drills and looked more decisive on more of his short throws. He did have a deep attempt down the sideline to Gavin Bartholomew which was slightly overthrown, and he had a couple other misfires as well- and a couple sacks- so it wasnt a perfect day by any means, but he seemed a bit more comfortable in the pocket.For Kyler Murray, he was closer to the low-end of the range weve seen since the start of training camp and stretching into the offseason program. He overshot a couple passes, had a couple would-be sacks, and otherwise mostly shorter, routine completions. He had a deep, more line-drive touchdown pass negated either by a would-be sack or a whistle, but Tai Felton was super wide open and it appeared the defense had stopped so it didnt count. Similarly, he had an interception following a whistle- perhaps an offsides or something like that where some players stopped and the play was negated. He also had another jump-ball type throw to Justin Jefferson in single coverage against Byron Murphy Jr., which was a good throw but went threw Jeffersons hands- but the play was also negated by an offensive pass interference call against Jefferson for pushing off- which he clearly did. He held the ball it bit longer again today looking for deeper passes that mostly didnt materialize.Overall McCarthy looked sharper today than Murray, who is also celebrating his birthday, in a day that was almost entirely routine throws in 11-on-11 team drills. Probably a day where coverage won more than anything and probably not a practice that moves the needle much in the quarterback competition. But give McCarthy his due for operating more at the top end of his range. Lastly, I didnt track the snap counts, but I thought Carson Wentz particularly got a few more reps than normal today- Brosmer maybe a couple more too. Neither one get more than a few reps in team drills normally so this isnt saying much, but worth mentioning.Good Day for Brett ThorsonSpecialists got some work today in team drills and more extensive punt drills and Brett Thorson took advantage of his opportunities. First, he had three reps as a holder in team drills, with the offensive having just one play and then a punt or field goal try. Thorson was holder for three field goal attempts by Will Reichard and he made all three of them. That was good for Thorson as he wasnt a holder in college and whether he beats Johnny Hekker or not may hinge on his holding ability.But Thorson also had some booming punts. It was difficult to tell exactly the yardage, but one looked to go about sixty yards and was caught near the sideline and another was longer than that with good location by the sideline too. Thorson was more mixed when it came to avoiding touchbacks, as was Johnny Hekker. Overall, if the Vikings feel comfortable/confident in Thorsons holding ability, I think his punting ability will overshadow the aging Hekker and could win him the punter/holder job. Lots of RotationOne thing I havent said specifically before is that there is a lot of rotation throughout team drills- a bit more than I remember in previous years- particularly on the defensive side. Defensive interior linemen in particular are rotated about every two plays it seems, but linebackers and defensive backs have a regular rotation as well. Offensively, the first team offensive line does not rotate, but all the skill positions do to some extent. And the second team offensive line has some rotation, and skill positions more so. Overall not super unusual, but there is a bit more rotation than normal going on this year. Thats probably a good sign for younger guys trying to make the roster.Other Miscellaneous NotesThis may not be breaking news, but Levi Drake-Rodriguez is kind of a dude. He seems to be taking on a bit of a leadership role amongst the defensive tackles, who are mostly quieter personalities and/or rookies, along with Jalen Redmond as the best player. As the two rookie defensive tackles Big Citrus and Caleb Banks ramp up, a lot will hinge on LDR in terms of how good the defensive interior is, especially early-on this season. Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins too. But LDR looks like he is ready to take a step up this year.Offensive line coach Keith Carter, along with receivers coach Keenan McCardell, are the most active position coaches for the Vikings. Early on in practice today, Carter had already soaked his t-shirt in sweat and he is seemingly always out there coaching up his players, even between plays in team drills, and barking out instructions in individual position group drills.Defensive Line coach Ryan Nielson shows a very individualized, technical approach with his group, spending more time with each player in drills with very detailed coaching. After looking repeatedly at my roster list and wondering why Chaz Chambliss (listed as #32) was playing defensive back, and also noting that he is now Black, I discovered that Jamal Adams had switched numbers and was taking snaps at safety. He played both box and deep safety at times. Apparently both Jay Ward and Jakobe Thomas were not participating in team drills today. Where Adams is positioned is something to monitor going forward. Jakobe Thomas hasnt been particularly impressive so far- he may be swimming a bit in learning the defense.Of the longshots to make the roster at wide receiver, Dontae Fleming has been the most impressive. He had a couple nice grabs today, but also a drop. He seems like hes got more ability to separate than the others.Run Game NotesThe Vikings have been clamping down more on the no video policy theyve had for years for training camp attendees, to keep secret new wrinkles in their scheme from getting out to opposing teams. Offensively, there may be greater reason for that this year as there may be more evolution in scheme than in previous years, particularly in the run game. I did a piece on potential new wrinkles in the offensive scheme a couple weeks ago, and it appears that some of that is showing up on the practice field. The Frank Smith influence is evident in some of the new looks in the run game in particular.But so far in training camp, the defense has had the upper hand in defending the run game as successful runs have been few and far between. Today there was a bit more success for the offense later in team drills, as a couple holes opened that Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason were able to exploit. And while Aaron Jones is still running exclusively with the first-team offense as expected, I wouldnt be surprised if the Vikings lean more on Jordan Mason this season, even if Jones is healthy. Mason was the more efficient back last season for the Vikings, and he returned trimmer and looks more involved in the pass game too. Demond Claiborne and Max Bredeson were paired frequently with the second team offense on Wednesday and even had a couple reps with the first team, and I could see the Vikings hoping both of those players earn significant roles this season. "She wasn't going to give away some easy balls."The Canadian left-hander won 24 of 27 points on her first serve and captured 17 of 23 points on Andreeva's second serves to advance. Maria is a tough opponent," Gauff said. "Her level definitely raised toward the end of that second set but I'm glad I was able to close it out. That last game was a big test for me."Gauff will next face 19-year-old Russian Alina Korneeva, who ousted US 13th seed Iva Jovic 6-3, 6-4. He was perfect through four innings, and allowed one run on two hits.Jarren Durans two-run homer over the Green Monster in left field opened the scoring and sparked Bostons five-run second inning. Jake Rogers had an RBI double, and Abreu added a two-run double.Abreus 380-foot double to right would have been a homer in every MLB ballpark except for Fenway Park, per Statcast.Three more came across in the fourth off the bats of Andruw Monasterio, Abreu, and Masataka Yoshida. Yoshida and Caleb Durbin each added one more to get the Red Sox into double-digit scoring for the second consecutive game.Jack Perkins (2-8) gave up five runs on five hits in three innings. Just one batter after pitching coach Zach Bove had trotted out to the mound to settle Schultz down after hitting Jo Adell with a pitch, Venable did same after Schultz surrendered a two-run single to soft-swinging Angel Martnez.Oops.While perhaps not on par with Bevington calling to the bullpen without having gotten a reliever up warming, Venables boner resulted, by rule, in Schultz being forced to leave the game. Given the gaffe, it had the effect of an injury substitution, in that just-recalled reliever David Sandlin was sprinting to get warm and enter the game, as no White Sox hurler was up in the pen with the game just 23 pitches old.At another point in the game, or in another circumstance, perhaps Venables boo-boo would not have crushed so hard. But in the fumes of a sweep in Boston, with last nights loss wiping out the bullpen (seven of the teams eight relievers were used, covering 8 innings), it could not possibly have been timed more poorly.But was this loss all on Venable? Of course not, the players still have to play the game, even if they landed in Chicago at 5 a.m. and grabbed only snatches of sleep before suiting back up on Friday. Usually when a team puts up eight runs or more in a game and wins by a hefty margin, its due to the whole team contributing. There are the rare occasions where a player takes over a game by himself, but thats usually reserved for the Shohei Ohtanis of the world. Unfortunately the White Sox were on the tail end of one of the most rare and sad butt-whoopings a team can have: They got spanked by a nobody.No disrespect to Martnez, but hes hit .228 over 861 at-bats in his short career. He is not a player teams ever game plan for or fear but that might change after what Martnez did to the White Sox on Friday night.Of course, it all started in the first inning, when the Cleveland Guardians loaded the bases before Schultz could even get two outs. After a first strike, Schultz decided to try to slip a cutter by Martnez ,right down the middle. Even a player who cant hit .230 can do something with that ,and his two-run single put the Guardians up, 2-0.For the next few innings, the game was pretty boring if were being honest with ourselves. Unfortunately, the game was also clearly too boring for Sandlin who after being rushed in for Schultz had sat down 12-of-14 Guards to restore order to the contest. That is, until he loaded that bases in the fifth inning for Martnez. Surely he couldnt do it again, right?Wrong.Sandlin saw Schultzs cutter down the middle bring in two runs for Cleveland in the first and wanted to see if it was a fluke or not. So the righty decided to throw one of his own, just to see which cutter down the middle was better. All fans in attendance found out pretty quickly that Schultzs was superior, as Martnez, tonights Angel of Death, took the pitch 422 feet to right-center field. The bat flip that ensued was cool, and the sassing of Sox catcher Edgar Quero probably turned on the most yahoo of Wahoos fans, but the game being unofficially ended in the fifth inning was not:View LinkWhen the dust settled from the seams getting knocked off the baseball, Martnez had just two hits on the night but they were two big ones, as he brought six runs home all by himself. Both teams struck for a run in the sixth, but the game was already over at that point.While the loss is just one loss, with Minnesota and Cleveland (obviously) also winning, this seems much bigger than that.
