SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAkron sees significant uptick in college football season tickets following lottery offer to script team's opening driveIn an effort to sell college football season tickets, Akron is offering football fans for the chance of a lifetime and its working.A promotion announced by the school earlier this week will provide one lucky winner for a chance to be the Offensive Coordinator of the Game. According to the release, the winner will get a chance to plan out Akrons opening drive in the Zips home opener against Robert Morris on Sept. 12.All Zips season ticket holders will be entered into the promotion, with the lottery drawing taking place on Aug. 19. Referring additional season ticket holders will boost your chances at getting the winning draw.Make history and be the lucky season ticket holder to design the opening drive of the home opener when @ZipsFB hosts Robert Morrishttps://t.co/G5aTUlVpzT#GoZips#MakeTheClimbpic.twitter.com/Qzu1w0R29O Akron Football (@ZipsFB) August 4, 2026Full reign over the teams game plan in that drive seems very unlikely: Per the release, the winning fan will work directly with Zips' football head coach Joe Moorhead to craft plays for the drive. But it hasnt stopped the unusual idea from receiving a significant amount of attention: The post announcing the promotion has more than 22 million views on X. And more importantly, ticket sales really have been going up.In an interview with The Athletic published Friday, Akron director of athletics Dr. Andrew T. Goodrich said that Akron has seen its largest increase in season ticket sales since the schools InfoCision Stadium opened in 2009. Season tickets, which start at just $75, are also being bought by people based across the country who are hoping to score the grand prize.Goodrich told The Athletic that he brainstormed the idea during a flight back from Tampa. He pitched it to senior deputy athletic director Matt Pottorff, who was sitting next to him on the plane.(He) very appropriately said, No, thats a bad idea, Goodrich told The Athletic.Moorhead echoed the sentiment, telling The Athletic that he initially though the proposal was ridiculous when Goodrich and Pottorff pitched it to him.Once the shock value wore away, and we discussed some benefits, now you see it spoke for itself. Its a really unique opportunity thats created a lot of positive publicity for our program, Moorhead said.Following the drawing in a little under two weeks, the winner will meet with Moorhead ahead of the season opener to design the plays, per the school. The winning fan will get to script the opening 10 to 15 offensive plays of the game, per The Athletic.Akron will travel to Winston-Salem to play Wake Forest to start the season on Sept. 3, before the suddenly must-see home opener against Robert Morris the following week.0 Comments 0 Shares 95 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRodri Is Not Coming To Real Madrid.. So, What Does Next Years Midfield Look Like?KLAGENFURT, AUSTRIA - AUGUST 01: Jose Mourinho, Head Coach of Real Madrid, speaks with Arda Gueler of Real Madrid during the pre-season friendly match between Real Madrid and Fiorentina at Woerthersee Stadion on August 01, 2026 in Klagenfurt, Austria. (Photo by Christian Bruna/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesWhen Real Madrid lost out on Rodri this Thursday snubbed by the Spanish midfielder who chose Barcelona instead it was seen as a big blow. Rodri, by many, was considered the final piece: Someone with experience who can organize the midfield, bring leadership, ball progression, and lead the team out of high pressure situations. But while there was panic among fans, the club remains calm. Their motto has always been: If you want to play here, great if not, we have no interest in pursuing you. And if you call us to tell us youre joining Barcelona, well, good luck, were out.Of course, Real Madrid are not completely clear of blame, and part of the reason Rodri slipped away was because the club showed some hesitation after initially having a verbal agreement in place with Rodri. They then stepped away, focused on Yan Diomande, and ran out of time. There has, and will be, other narratives that come out of this that club will want to push out, namely that it was Rodri and Manchester Citys fault. This author will also let you know, after several conversations with sources, that Real Madrid werent fully committed to Rodri either, and there were several good reasons behind it, which are all fair: Rodri had an ACL injury two seasons ago, and last season, he missed nearly 30 games due to a combination of hamstring, groin, and knee injuries. Then there was the back surgery, which some brush off as minor; but Managing Madrids resident radiologist, Vik Sobti, who specializes in back and spine injuries, indicated real concern with Rodris back and athletes who have back injuries and surgeries in general. Those issues are often chronic and extremely difficult to recover. Some never do.Time will tell. Rodri may very well stay healthy for the next three-to-five years. If he does, Barcelona or anyone else who wouldve had him wouldve received an upgrade in midfield. If Rodris health deteriorates (and to be clear, no one wants that to happen), then Real Madrid dodged a bullet. But whats done is done. Rodri is (probably) going to Barcelona, and good riddance. Things move on fast at this club. The question is Now what?According to COPEs Arancha Rodriguez, the club is done with signings. If true, that in itself is interesting to unpack for two reasons:By all accounts Jose Mourinho wanted a Rodri profile in the team. With Rodri off the table, is it not pertinent to shift eyes to other targets? If not, then its very clear: There arent names appealing enough that would justify benching names like Arda Gler and Bernardo Silva and if the solution to losing Rodri, as reported, is from within, then the bet is almost certainly on those two. That will be disappointing for fans to hear, but it is somewhat reasonable: Real Madrid currently have two slots open in that double pivot and these players are fighting for them: Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, Fede Valverde, Bernardo Silva, Arda Gler. (Gler is included in this list of deeper midfielders, as my hunch and who knows, I could be wrong will be that Mourinho builds his systems around Jude Bellingham as the 10.This conversation would be a lot easier if Real Madrid were able to move Camavinga out of the squad, or had they simply not signed Bernardo earlier this summer.I feel similar this summer to the way I felt last summer about this position: I think its important Real Madrid have someone come in as an elite deep-lying playmaker, but also weary of signing someone not good enough to justify stalling Glers progress. This is somewhat contradictory, because I have said continually in the past two years that this team needs more leaders and established players, and less developments and projects. But this may come down to the simple fact that I value Gler much higher than some others do. In that linked article, I also outlined how certain tropes about him can be debunked, namely, silly claims that he doesnt show up in big games, or that his defense is a problem. He was one of Real Madrids only bright spots last season and continues to improve. The analytics with him are very impressive. There is also some recency bias surrounding Bernardo, who, unfortunately didnt play much in the World Cup but a lot of that has to do with the fact that Portugal already have Joao Neves, Vitinha, and Bruno Fernandes (and also, Roberto Martinez churned in one of the worst managerial performances in recent World Cup memory). The Rodri snub has also made the Bernardo signing look worse in many peoples eyes, because he has unfairly been attribute with the moniker the wrong midfielder from City.Silva is still very good, if you look past the World Cup disaster. His attacking output decreased in his last season at City as he played deeper than normal, but his passing and defense remains very much intact. I would not be surprised if we reflect on his signing at the end of the season as a success. Do not put it past him to exceed expectations and help bring important leadership and minutes throughout all major campaigns.A trio of Tchouameni Valverde Camavinga does not bring much inspiration in terms of control and creativity. For that reason, I would start either Gler or Bernardo in midfield.Continue having faith in Jose Mourinho. He has an impeccable transfer record.0 Comments 0 Shares 96 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMatch Day: New Mexico United at Monterey Bay FCSaturdayWhen: 8 p.m.Where: Cardinale Stadium, Seaside, CaliforniaTV: CBS SportsRecords: New Mexico United (8-4-3), Monterey Bay FC (4-12-3)Series history: United leads 4-2-2.Three matches on the road followed by one at home. So, naturally, that means traveling again for New Mexico United. This time? New Mexico gets the cellar-dweller of the Western Conference: Monterey Bay FC.Here are some things to note:Free kicks1. A NEW LOOK: Some things are new. Some things are not.Lets get the most obvious one out of the way first. Unlike with other Western Conference opponents, this will be Uniteds initial matchup with Monterey Bay this season. Theres nothing wrong with some freshness every now and then. But that also means a lack of familiarity at least on film and paper with some of an opponents players and tendencies. (Although, that certainly hasn't been a problem for most. More on that below.)Monterey Bay has deployed four types of formations this season a 4 (defenders)-2 (midfielders)-3 (forwards)- 1 (striker), a 4-4-2, a 3-4-3 and a 4-3-3. Its used those structures 14, four and four times, and once, respectively. The not-so-new part per se is Monterey Bay coach Alex Covelo, who was installed at the end of April. He replaced former Premier Leaguer Jordan Stewart.Stewart himself was a mid-season hire when he landed the job in August 2024. But in his two-plus years in charge, Monterey Bay went 11-30-15 across all competitions. The club was 0-5-3 before he was dropped. This, meanwhile, is Covelos first first-team job since being named interim coach of San Jose Earthquakes in MLS in 2022. The Spaniard spent nine seasons at San Jose in different staff positions. Its been his longest of his stops that have also included stints in Italian and Spanish soccer, as well as an assistant for the United States in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.Under Cavelos care, Monterey Bay is 4-7-1.2. OPPOSITE ENDS OF THE SPECTRUM: United and Monterey Bay are in quite different positions at the moment. For statistical purposes, New Mexico has a 10-match unbeaten streak across all matches, nine of which have come against USL competition. Its 27 points place it fourth on the 12-club Western Conference table, two behind FC Tulsa, four behind San Antonio FC and seven fewer than Orange County SC.Monterey Bay has lost five straight and has picked up two wins over its last 10 matches. The clubs 15 points has it sitting last n the West, 10 points from eighth place, the final playoff spot.It should also be noted that only two clubs have fewer points than Monterey Bay Brooklyn FC (13) and Sporting Jax (8), both of which are from the Eastern Conference. You can probably guess where those two rank in the 13-club East. If the bottom two spots were where you ended up, good job.It hasnt helped Monterey Bay has a negative-12-goal differential 31 against (tied for the third most) to 19 for (tied for 21st most) in the regular season.3. GOLD GLOVE AWARD? Well, its really called the Golden Glove. It goes to the top goalkeeper. Its one of three notable awards the USL Championship gives out at the end of the regular season along with the Golden Boot for top scorer and Golden Playmaker for whoever tallies the most assists.Uniteds Kris Shakes currently finds himself fourth in the Golden Glove race, which is ranked on regular-season goals against average. Shakes GAA is 1. He recorded his fifth regular-season clean sheet and seventh overall in last Saturdays 1-0 win over Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC.Detroit City FCs Carlos Herrera (0.93), Hartford Athletics Antony Siaha (0.94) and Sacramento Republic FCs Danny Vitiello (0.94) are currently ahead of Shakes. San Antonio FCs Joey Batrouni (1.02) sits fifth.Heres how our key award races look after July pic.twitter.com/E889RyYKDd USL Championship (@USLChampionship) August 4, 20264. IF YOU CANT BEAT THEM, BEAT THEM: Monterey Bay certainly hasnt wowed anyone with its defense, scoring ability or results. The place the club has bragging rights if you want to call it that over the league? Fouls conceded.Monterey Bay leads the Championship with 328, seven more than second-place Miami FC and 49 more than third-place Phoenix Rising FC. The club is also fourth in earning yellow cards with 49.United by comparison is 22nd in fouls conceded (208) and tied for second in yellows (44).Key matchupUnited forward Cristian Nava vs. Monterey Bay midfielder Jacob MontesNava has started each of Uniteds last five matches all wins. During that stretch, the Albuquerque native has recorded a goal and an assist, which came in that win over Colorado Springs. Montes is a new addition for Monterey Bay. He made his debut in Wednesdays 1-0 loss to El Paso Locomotive FC. Montes, a member of the Nicaraguan national team, previously played for RWDM Brussels, which was relegated from Belgiums second tier.Player of the matchUnited forward/defender Jake LaCavaLaCava has played in just one match over the last month a 2-0 at El Paso on June 11 dealing with a foot injury. But teammates Ousman Jabang and Niko Hmlinen believe LaCava is a candidate to score on Saturday. It will also be interesting to see if defender Maliek Howell plays after appearing to injure his left hamstring in last Saturdays win.By the numbers1: United retained its top spot in the Championships power rankings again, for whatever thats worth. Monterey Bay rose to 22nd.0-2-2: Unites record in Seaside, California.3: The number of keepers Monterey Bay has deployed this season Jacob Jackson (9 regular-season appearances), Fernando Delgado (9) and Ciaran Dalton (2).1,023: The shortest one-way distance in miles from Albuquerque to Seaside.David Glovach covers New Mexico United and other sports for the Journal. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMark Wilf: Our family intends to be part of the Vikings for a "very, very long time"The Wilfs have owned the Vikings for 21 years. They don't plan to end their tenure any time soon.Earlier this year, local speculation emerged that the Wilfs could sell based on a massive drop in spending from 2025 to 2026. The team quickly got the word out that its not, and wont be, for sale."The business side of it is not what got us into the Minnesota Vikings," co-owner Mark Wilf told reporters on Thursday. "We love football. We're honored and privileged to be stewards of an incredible franchise, and our ultimate goal is to bring championships to the fans of the Minnesota Vikings, who really deserve it. And that's what we're about, and that's the excitement, and we're long term, we're a family that is going to hopefully be part of the Minnesota Vikings for a very, very long time."Wilf also said that the Vikings "aren't focused on" the possibility of selling a piece of the team to any of the approved private-equity funds. The Wilfs have successfully built a new stadium, one that has hosted a Super Bowl. By all indications, the Vikings continue to make plenty of money, each and every year. The on-field success has been limited, to say the least. Since the Wilfs bought the team from the late Red McCombs in 2005, the Vikings have won only three playoff games: one in 2009, one in 2017, and one in 2019. The Vikings have made it to the playoffs only eight times in the 21 seasons that the Wilfs have owned the team, with back-to-back playoff years only once (2008 and 2009)."Ultimately, it's about not just playoff wins, but championships," Wilf said. "And that is the ultimate measure. We know that. We try to be patient as an ownership, and that's what our that we know is the ultimate success. But, of course, patience isn't infinite. We understand that, but I feel really good about the direction of this football club, and we're going to get those benchmarks checked off here."The biggest benchmark winning a Super Bowl has never been checked off by the Vikings. Since the team's last Super Bowl appearance 50 years ago, the Vikings have gone 0-6 in the NFC Championship. While the Wilfs aren't cheap, talk is. Yes, Mark Wilf said the right things on Thursday. It all comes down to whether the organization can find a way to consistently contend, and whether it can ever get back to a Super Bowl and finally win one.For most Vikings fans who lived (and died) with a team that did very well, but not well enough, in the 1970s, the dream has been to witness the confetti fall of purple helmets just once in their lifetimes.
