After a busy day on Friday, when Washington officially announced the signing of four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs, the Commanders kicked off Saturday with even more roster moves. Washington officially announced the signing of veteran offensive lineman Max Scharping, which was reported on Friday, but GM Adam Peters wasn't done. The Commanders also signed former Tennessee Titans third-round pick Nicholas Petit-Frere and veteran offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill. Petit-Frere is a 6-foot-5, 316-pound offensive tackle who played collegiately at Ohio State. The 26-year-old spent his first three seasons with the Titans, where he appeared in 34 games and made 28 starts, mostly at right tackle. He was waived in 2025 and signed with the San Francisco 49ers. He was again waived before playing a game in San Francisco and was out of the NFL last season. Brunskill, 32, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2017. He has spent time with the Falcons, 49ers, Titans and Dolphins. He was released by the Dolphins last summer and did not play in 2025. The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Brunskill has appeared in 108 career NFL games, with 71 starts. He has experience at center and both guard spots. He started 24 games for the Titans in 2023 and 2024. He started 10 games at center for the Titans in 2024. McKay was a priority UDFA in 2025, but was injured last summer. He had worked at guard and taken some snaps at center in this training camp. These moves say more about Washington's concern regarding its offensive line depth, as no starting spots are up for grabs except the battle between Chris Paul and Brandon Coleman at left guard. Until the UCLA Bruins are in College Football Playoff contention, which has yet to happen in the CFP era, all UCLA fans can do is root for the demise of the rival USC Trojans. USC also has yet to make a CFP appearance but that might change in 2026.The Trojans went 9-4 last season and added another strong recruiting class, which should only help USCs depth while giving head coach Lincoln Riley fewer excuses for missing the playoffs.Riley has been able to churn out strong offenses, the big questions for the Trojans reside on the defensive side of the ball. While UCLA had the worst scoring defense in the Big Ten last year, USC wasnt too far behind with the eighth-worst defense in the conference.With the USC defense being the question mark, Trojans Wire writer Matt Zemek discussed whether or not he believes that the Trojans defense can take a step in 2026 under first-year defensive coordinator Gary Patterson.I am skeptical about the defense. It got bullied last year by the best opponents on the Trojans' schedule. Lincoln Riley coaches soft defenses. It is what it is. That's his track record. USC fans don't like it, but they really can't argue the point, either. Lincoln Riley has to prove he can field a team with a snot-knocking defense, Zemek said. Until that's proven, Riley and USC by extension have simply not earned the benefit of the doubt. The defensive line is easily the most important position group. Jahkeem Stewart is the headliner, but even if he plays well, he can't do it himself. USC's defense was bad even when Tuli Tuipulotu was playing elite ball in 2022. It can't be one guy. It takes a village, as the saying goes. The jury is out on whether USC has that village in 2026. Instead, GM Brian Cashman traded away Camilo Doval, Jake Bird, and Yovanny Cruz. The most charitable interpretation here is addition by subtraction. Doval and Bird two of three relievers Cashman acquired at the 2025 deadline had been major disappointments (while Cruz had made just four appearances this year and was more of a depth piece). Their ouster creates opportunities for others to take a step forward in the pecking order.As I do each month in a given season, Im going to take a look at the Yankees relievers to identify how manager Aaron Boone is deploying each and offer a verdict as to how much trust we can place in them moving forward using the following ranking system:5: As confident as one can be in a reliever, the most fickle position in baseball4: High degree of confidence, but some trepidation remains3: Glass half full or glass half empty? The choice is yours2: Major concerns here, though perhaps a glimmer of hope1: Absolute zero usually reserved for those with a minimal track recordStatistics below are from July 1-August 6.The CloserDavid BednarRecent stats: 14.2 IP, 1.23 ERA, 17 SO, 2.69 FIP, 9 Saves (in 9 opportunities)Regardless of what happened at the deadline, with the possible exception of a Mason Miller acquisition, Bednar was going to remain the teams closer, and for good reason. After an uneven start to the season, hes allowed runs to score in just one of 25 outings since May 18th, a remarkable run of excellence thats largely flown under the radar. In a bullpen thats experienced some flux, hes been low drama, exactly what you want out of your closer.Confidence level: 5Bednar is seventh among active players in saves, with everyone ahead of him older and longer tenured. The combination of his excellence this year and track record over his career makes him one of the most reliable closers in baseball. The Set-Up MenBrent HeadrickRecent stats: 18 IP, 1.00 ERA, 27 SO, 0.60 FIPOver his first three seasons, Headrick pitched more at Triple-A than in the big leagues, appearing to be no more than a depth piece. This year? As Michael Baumann over at FanGraphs eloquently outlined on Thursday, hes putting up one of the best reliever seasons in Yankees history. Among primary relievers, only Miller and Louis Varland have lower ERAs.Confidence level: 5I was skeptical of Headricks success early in the season, but hes sustained this level of performance for long enough that it cannot be ignored. And his peripherals, including elite whiff and barrel rates, support that this is no fluke. Hes firmly entrenched in the late-inning mix, and rightfully so.Paul BlackburnRecent stats: 22.2 IP, 1.19 ERA, 23 SO, 4.24 FIPSay what you will about the Yankees organization they can take a washed up journeyman and turn him into a star reliever like no other team in baseball. Blackburn is the latest beneficiary of the Luke Weaver effect, transforming from a struggling swingman into a back-end option. After using him in long relief for most of the season, Boone has begun inserting him in the eighth, with strong early results.Confidence level: 3.5Blackburn deserves credit for his turnaround, but the jurys still out on how sustainable it will be. While hes not missing many bats, his 56.5 ground-ball rate suggests he may have a legitimate new formula. If he performs well in another month of high-leverage usage, Ill feel much more confident he can be part of the path to Bednar moving forward.The Middle RelieversFernando CruzRecent stats: 14 IP, 3.21 ERA, 14 SO, 5.10 FIPAfter working as a set-up man, Cruz has been deployed recently as the first man out of the bullpen to bail out a fading starter to get to the late innings. Wherever Boone uses him, he knows what hes getting: a pitcher with a one-of-a-kind splitter who both misses bats and issues walks as much as anyone in baseball.Confidence level: 4Cruz is a known quantity at this point. His energy on the mound and ability to dominate on his best day more than make up for the days when he loses the strike zone and works himself into trouble. He remains very much in the high-leverage picture.Tim HillRecent stats: 11.2 IP, 5.40 ERA, 5 SO, 9.10 FIPAfter a remarkably consistent run through nearly two years in New York, Hills bag of tricks has begun to wear out its welcome. Since May 12th, his ERA has ballooned from 1.00 to 4.40 as hes allowed 21 runs (19 earned) in 25 innings. Unsurprisingly, hes slipped out of the inner ring of Boones circle of trust.Confidence level: 2.5Hills numbers remain strong against lefties, maintaining his value as a lefty specialist. Otherwise, though, his stock has taken a major hit.The Long RelieverRyan YarbroughRecent stats: 10 IP, 1.80 ERA, 5 SO, 4.89 FIPIts been an odd season for Yarbrough, who has performed well despite intermittent usage. His hard-hit rate of 22.5 percent tops MLB (Cruz is second) despite or, perhaps, because of throwing one of the slowest fastballs in the game. Of note for his recent stats: Yarbrough has allowed six unearned runs this month.Confidence index: 2.5Yarbrough is perfectly suited for his long relief role, giving a different look than any other Yankees pitcher while eating some lower-leverage innings. The Mop-Up MenYerry De los SantosRecent stats: 9.1 IP, 5.79 ERA, 7 SO, 3.38 FIP (at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre)This is where the Yankees bullpen starts to get scary. After moving Doval and Bird (and sending Angel Chivilli down to Triple-A), the Yankees promoted De los Santos, who had been getting absolutely torched at Triple-A. He does have a strong 2.84 ERA in 30 appearances with the Yankees over the past two seasons, but if the team had confidence that was indicative of his potential theyd have called him up earlier in the season.Confidence level: 1De los Santos has been useful as a Quadruple-A player, but the prospect of him becoming a mainstay in the bullpen is alarming. Were one injury away from the 28-year-old starting to see action late in close games.Kervin CastroRecent stats: 3.1 IP, 0.00 ERA, 5 SO, 1.90 FIPCastro has earned his shot. After last pitching in the bigs for the Cubs in 2022, the Yankees took a flier on him last year and he excelled at Triple-A, a run of success he continued this year. Over both seasons, he posted a 1.63 ERA at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The early returns with the Yankees have been strong as well, with three scoreless outings since he was recalled in late July.Confidence level: 1Id love to see Castros Cinderella story continue, but success at Triple-A does not always translate at the big-league level. Hell need to show a lot more before he gains any trust in Boones bullpen pecking order.

Michael Malones first squad for UNC was shaping up to be one that had the potential to be fun to watch, but also was very short on size with experience. The roster had three players listed at center, but only one Cade Bennerman is from the United States, and while he is in his second year of playing college ball, he redshirted his first year meaning he hasnt actually played a meaningful minute on the court. The other two players Sayon Keita and Alexandros Samodurov come from across the ocean and thus will have to acclimate to the speed and style of the college game.Carolina did have Jarin Stevenson with some height who could play some at the five as needed, but anyone whos watched him knows his role fits in better as the free-flowing four, and not necessarily as the player to plant down low, grab rebounds, and be the focal point of the defense down low. Thus, there was an opening for one more center, and while Carolina kept having issues getting experience, the judges ruling dropped another one on their doorstep: Cameron Fens. So, how big is this decision for the Tar Heels?Fens is your prototypical center. He played all 32 games for South Dakota last year, just one of two players to be on the floor for every game. He also saw a lot of time on the court, averaging 25.2 minutes per game. Thats basically the same amount that Stevenson played last season for the squad and would have put him on par with the other regulars that saw the floor for Carolina. Averaging fourteen points and nearly nine rebounds a game, his stats line up with about everything you could ask for a regular college center. This is something to benefit both the current version of the Tar Heels and the future. Now the three centers that will enter practice will have someone they can emulate their fundamentals around. That plus the teachings of Sean May a huge holdover from the previous staff and Malone, who will always be able to lean on his past success with Nikola Joki to get players to listen to him, exponentially increase the ability of the Tar Heels to play inside.Theres another benefit to adding to the depthand thats come through in the videos the team has released on social media.On the attack pic.twitter.com/krnkoLwOPv Carolina Basketball (@UNC_Basketball) August 7, 2026There is a huge emphasis, it would appear, with playing with pace by the new coaching staff, and every player that can be on the court will be a huge help to this strategy. It also will help to have a center that is as durable as Fens is. The biggest concern, of course, is that its quite a step up from South Dakota to the ACC. A peek at his numbers from last season shows just three games against high major teams: Missouri, Creighton, and Kansas State. In two of those three games, he only scored in the single digits, but in the final game against Kansas State he notched 17 in the 30-point loss to the Wildcats. It also doesnt bode well for his ceiling that its taken until a court-ordered fifth year for him to rise out of the Summit League to this level of basketball.Overall, the decision by Fens to join the Tar Heels should be a positive, even if the primary impact he has his fundamental skills as a big man may not be as obvious when we see him play games. It still takes away a huge question mark that the Tar Heels had going into the year, and does raise their ceiling and the possibilities as to what the squad can do.Ultimately, the decision will likely pay off more in the future than the present, as it allows some stress to be taken off the younger players as they acclimate to life in Chapel Hill. If one of them supplants Fens later in the year, itll be because theyll have learned how to play better in practice from Fens instead of the game.
